Mary Stone, west, in which Mrs. Margaret Gantt of 1765N street was killed outright and her daughter, Miss Clare Gantt, seriously if not fatally in- | Jured. The ladies had started out for a drive in their own team, driven by Frank Perron, a young colored man of eighteen years of age. They had driven to 16th street, when the horse became frightened aud ran at a fearful gait down Rhode Island avenue, jerking the lines | from the driver's hands. The driver jumped from his seat and attempted to get the lincs, but falling on his hands failed to get them, and a moment later the ladies jumped from the ‘curriage in opposite directions. Mrs, | Gantt jumped toward the rear and feli_heavily on the asphalt and the daughter alighted on her feet, but fell torward on her face. Dr. Coe of 1522 Caroline street saw the oc- ce and, with Mr. E, J. Underwood, took tho injuried ladies into the reeidence of the latter, 1446 Khode Island avenue. Dr.Cuthbert quickly joined Dr. Coe, and it was not long before they ascertained that Mrs. Gantt had received @ fracture of the skull which would likely termi- nate fatally and, after making her as comfort- able as possible, they did everything in their power for Miss Gantt. ‘The mother did not re- gain consciousness after the accident and died in forty minutes thereafter. The family phy- sician, Dr. Mackall, alyo responded to the cail, Mive Clare regained consciousness during the evening and the physicians thought that she would recover, but in the latter part of the night her condition became worse. ‘The coroner, Dr. Patterson, after hearing the statements of the driver and Dr.@Coe, gave a certificate in the case of Mrs. Gantt, and body was removed to her late residence. The horse was captured some distance from the = of the accident, and the carriage not wing injured shows that had they kept their weats there would have been no bad results, The deceased was a native of Georgetown, a Miss Smith, and is the widow of Lieut. Benj. Gantt of the United States navy, who died at sea many years ago. Her brother, Mr. Richard Smith, was for a number of years president of the old Bank of Commerce. Until a few years ago the mother and daughter lived in Georgetown, when they removed to St. Louis and made their home with the late Judge Thomas T. Gantt of that city, a brotber-in-law of the deceased lady, Judge Gantt died about two years ago and then the ladies returned to this city. ‘They had only recently taken possession of their house, 1765 N street, which Judge Gantt bought with the view of making his home here when he should retire from active life.
