4 >= THE EVENING STAR. pV ASHINGTON: DHE EVENING STAR bas the fullest Local Ctreulation of any Newspaper in the World, end as an Advertising Mediam is wort more than all the other papers published in Washington. Little states have produced more men of mark in proportion to population than larger @nea. Vermont has had for many years an ex- ceptionally able representation in the Senate of the United States, In point of length of service in that body the two Senators who h: reached thirty years have been one from the southwest, the other from a small New England community. Benton spent five consecutive terms in the Senate. Anthony had entered on his sixth term at the time of his death. It is believed that few Congressmen have had a continuous service exceeding thirty years, The great careers of Clay, John Quincy Adams, Webster and Calhoun were at times interrupted by other occupations, Nathaniel Macon, Speaker in Jefferson's time, was per- haps longer in Congressional service— Seuate and House togethor—than any other eminent man, having been a member of Con- gress for thirty-seven ycars without interrup- tion, thirteen years having been passed in the Senate. The Philadelphia Press is therefore not quite right in thinking that Mr. Morrill’s terms in House and Senate, aggregating thi six years noxt March, cannot be matched. Both the Vermont Senators have “seen some serv- ice,” Mr. Edmunds having entered the Senate im 1966 and continued there since as the lead- ing lawyer of the body. This was one year be- fore Mr. Morrill closed his twelfth consecutive year in the House of Representatives and cn- tered on his Senatorial career. Both, there- fore, at the end of the terms for which they have been chosen will have been 90-year men. The last-named Senator, who colebrated in this city last Apru his 80th birthday, has been a hard and able worker, a groat political economist and one of the foremost men of the republic for many years. Tue Stan, congratulates the venerable Senator and his appreciative coa- stituents on his re-election, and wishes him a continuation of the remarkable felicity which 60 long a period of the republic's life. ———————— A recent writer has used the novel expression concerning the salaried class of workers that they “think in money and not in goods.” By this it was intended to express the disposition of mon and women living upon salarics to care more for what they receive than for what they expend, The ideais that they look at the money earned as wages or salary as a fund over which they havo absolute control, spending much or little of it as they please, Theorvti- cally it is truo that the employe has the power of disbursement of his earnings in as free a sense as hisemployor. Practically when he comes to sample the market for every day sup- plies—the coal, tne milk, the bread, the meat, butter, eggs, coffes, tea, sugar, etc., that make up the physical sustenance, along with the rent, the clothes and the doctor's bill—not to speak of the preacher and the teacher aud the newspaper and the hundred and one other necessary things in life— he finds that he pays what the market calls for and not what he chooses to spend, so far as bis money and his credit go.
