Gratifying accounts have been received of the success in Dresden of Misa Carrie V. Annie Foley is one of thoso unfortunates who can’t keep out of the work house, She spends on an average ten months of each year in prison. She was the first prisoner arraigaed before Judge Miller. The second lecture in the public lecture | course of the Catholic University was delivered | yesterday afternoon by the Right Rev. Dr. Keane, the rector. His subjoct was the solation of the problemof Christian education. He maintained the right and duty of the state to provide for popular education, which, how- ever, must not interfere with the rights of an; class of citizens. The time had come, he sais when the need of religious elements in educa- tion was being generally recogmzed, but some would reduce them toa minimum, as, for ex- ample, the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Command- ments and the ‘mon ou the Mount. He quoted Prof. Huxiey to show that even these would be most strongly objected to by a large and respectable section of the community, while on the other hand they would be far too little to satisfy most Christian denominations, If Christian teaching in the schools is a good thing. he asserted, tho more of it the better. The school money should not be divided among the different denominations, but may be divided among all the schools giving az adequate secular education. He adverted to the Poughkeepsie plan, which he said bad been advocated by Most Rev. Archbishop Ire- land at the national educational convention in Minneapolis, but said that such a plan is only approved of as a stepping stone to a more sat- isfuctory one. and has the great disadvantage of relezating religion toa time before and after school hours, as if it were something to be ashamed of. — an Why He Remembers Belknap.
