4 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON October 16, 1890. STAR bas the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the Wortd, ising Mediam ts werth other papers published in Washingt Of all the fall political campaigns perhaps Rone since that in Mr. Reed's district has ex- cited as much interest as the state clection in Pennsylvania, ‘There the contest is one for and against Senator Quay. The republicans nominated for the position of governor a friend of the Senator, the democrats ex-Goy, Pattison. The latter was preferred to ex-Senator Wal- lace because he was supposed to have more strength among the dissatisfied republicans. ‘The absence of Mir. Wallace since the nomina- tion of Pattison has given the republicans a cbance to claim that he did not intend to sup- port, at least with much alacrity, tho demo- cratic ticket. But the return of the ox-Senator and his participatica in the canvass removes apparently the ground on which this claim rests, Tho democrats have said the bitterest things both of Mr. yy and the nominee, Mr. Deiamater. They have made hardly any use of the tariff issue until now, when Mr. Wallace Presents it, Tho republicans have, on the contrary, not been content to wage a defensive warfare a3 to state politics, but have pushed the attack on the tariff issue, feeling safe in soinsuch a high protection state as Pennsylvania. The result will show which party is the wiser in the present status of affairs. The democrats have the enormous Majority of 0,000 toovercome. If they suc- ceed oreven reduce the republican mejority to lessthan half they will achieve a victory worth crowing over. For the resources of the republicans are so great that nothing short of arevolation in sentiment can wrest the state from their control. When Pattison was elected eight years ago there were two republican can. didates iu the field. The prescnt situation different. The im- m in the ten years has been little short and a quarter millions and is to be cred- ited, of course, to general progress; but the small increase in the native population is dis- appointing if true, and if not true ia still dis- appointing. $$$ The late Mr. Reuben Enrrows of Alabama in his last willand testament devised and be- queatbed all Lis propertf, real and personal, amounting to $20,000, to his son and daughter. Miss Burrows willbe quite a catch—for Ala- bama—and some one of the young men of that state should apply the law of compensation and get even with Reuben by marrying the daughter and disbursing the weaith her father accumulated at such hazardous business risks— for Mr. Burrows was not a speculator and always robbed people fairly, openly and with- out subterfuze or deceit. —— The German socialist congress is wise in its day and generation.
