But there are homes and homes, Hitherto it has been customary for persons in control of charitable institutions which ad-nit distressed young women to make no distinction between those whose previous existence had been elouded by immorality and those whose feet had never trodden in the paths of viciousness, Today there are many energetic Christian workers who fail to see the wrongs worked by the indiscriminate system they contin- ually advocate. but the number of such is steadily diminishing. It is a kindness to give food and shelter to the fallen woman and the helping hand should never be slow to action, but it is very questionable whether there is any real charity in lending assistance to a morally pure girl if, in order that she may be helped, she has to be brought into close contact and unavoidable association with the weaker or more wiliful of ber sex. The results are not always what philanthro- Piste would like them to be. but they are just it any reasoning being would imagine they ald be. ‘Time and experience have failed to discount the story of what the one decayed epple did in the basket of sound fruit. ‘MRS. MARY G. WILKINSON. First in this city to make practical applica- tion of the principle which insists that the two elasses shall be separately treated wax Mrs. Mary G. Wilkinson. For wany years Mrs. Wilkinson had toiled in church and temper- ance work, and many «man and woman will cheerfully testify that her labor was not in vain. There were homes in existence at that time, but in al] of them there was a promiscn- ous commingling of the good and the bad. Mrs. Wilkinson saw the evil which was un- consciously being done and she at once has- tened to remedy it. That was two years ago. A house—| 28 C street—was rented and the business of feeding and sheltering the hungry and virtuous trangers commenced. The house was soon far too small for the work, but it was as large as the exchequer would permit. At times the existence of the plan was seriously imperiled and there were crises when it seemed beyond Peradventure that the enterprise must come to an ignominious conclusion for lack of the necessary financial support. Much suppiica- tion on the pert of the founder and the re- sponsive liberality of those who had means prevented the calamity which more than once threatened destruction. Then came congres- sional recognition, small, but welcome. and now the home draws the sum of $1,000 annually from the general government and the District Jointly. THE HOME ON SIXTH STREET. The home—known for some time as the Wilkinson Home (agaizst the wishes of the lady thus honored)—burst its contracted C- street bonds in March last and re-established itself im the building it now occupies, No. 404 6th street northwest, immediately opposite the Police Court. Nineteen rooms are at the dis- posal of the management. and from twenty-five to thirty girls can be accommodated without ¢rowding. The family. for so it is termed, numbered fourteen persons when a Srax re- | re called at the home the other evening. at the namber varies considerably from week toweek. There have never been more than } sixteen giris there at one time and the family has been down to where a tigure 6 would rep- resent the total membership. WHERE THEY coME FROM. Some people may wonder where the girls all come from. They are from everywhere. Hardly a state in the Union that does not fer- nish # representative at some time or another: and foreign lands have also furnished inmates. Just now a young German lady is enjoying the hospitality of the place while endeavoring to secure employment as governess or to organ- ize a class tor the study of the language of the Fatherland. It is not a difficult thing to get into the home. The only requirements are poverty, lacie of friends and good behavior. Any woman who fame fons for admission at night is always received tended to, but unless her moral condition is satisfactory and the references good her tenure is brief; she is forwarded to one of the homes where the reformatory idea is more prominent and where effort is more largely in the line of lifting the fallen than sustaining the virtuous. DIRECTED BY THE POLICE. ‘The girls do not all find the home themselves, Kindly policemen and railroad employes have sent many @ beartsore and footsore woman to the shelter of No. 404. Sanitary Officer Frank is always sending « homeless one around and Agent Emery of the Associated Charities has been spousor for several. Most of the girls come to the city m search of employment, and, of course, the majority of them fail to get any until they secure the as- aintance of the lady managers of the home or | other energetically charitable folks. Now the home is possessed of a reputation and great people who need domestic help call at the home sad see what there is in the way of available material, Some of the girls have prospecte—more or less illusive—when they come here, and these are assisted im their endeavors to secure the ae which were partially promised them be- fore they left their homes.
