The Washington Camera Cinb entertained o house fuliof its friends last night at G.A.R. Hall with an irregular series of seventy views in California taken by the members of the Pacitic Coast Amateur Photographic Associa- tion, and in pursuance of the plan of inter- change prevailing among the various amateur camera clubs of the country sent to Washing- ton for exhibition, accompanied by a lecture descriptive of the slides. The lecturo in this instance was delivered by Secretary Jewott of the home club, who was introduced in liminary talk by President Hansmann. The views of the state were unlike those usually seen in professional exhibitions and were that much more interesting. Some of the pictures were stant applause, Others were instructive, others artistic as to almost bring a doubt that they were reproduc- tions from nature, and all were interesting. ‘The slides were selected from some two hun- dred taken by the club and represent its best work, and the club has every right, occasion and circumstance to be proud of itself and the Very successful result of its efforts. A sugges- tion might be made to the Pacific coasters that the lecture they send with their slides is not California products, its size is slightly out of proportion. ‘The Washington ciub is pre- paring a series of slides which promise to be of national interest. a Father Mathews’ Banner. Tonight the centenary of Father Matthews’ birth will be celebrated at Carroll Hall in the Presence of as many people es can secure ad- mission. The speakers will be those who were mentioned in terday’s Star. A feature of the evening's pleasure will be the exhibition of the original banner which was presented to Father Mathew by the iadies of the city of Cork, Ireland. This banner Father Mathew gave to Col. Sherburne, one of his most active coadjutors, and as Col. Sherburne was grand- father of Mrs. Young of this city it very natur- aily came into Mrs. Young's possession. In connection terest to state that Father Mathew carried it while he piedged to temperance 5,000,000 of the 7,000,000 people then in Ireland, The True Commonwealth Club. Last evening a middle-aged man cailed at Tue Star office and stated he had been to the court house to see if there was any record of the murriage of @ certain young woman, but the court house was closed. He thought he might find the record in the files of Tur Sran. With the assistance of a clerk the notice of the marriage of the young woman, which took place in this city a little over a month ago, was found , [couldn't believe it of her,” exclaimed the man when he had read the no- tice. “Nee what she sent me,” aud he there- upon pulied from his pocket a numbor of let- vers, “See how she writes ‘My dear friend,’ “My darling,’ ‘If you want me to marry you I mist have another ring, for I lost the set from the last one sent,’ and soon. I don't under- stand it. She kept writing to me for rings and Isent them, for I believed she loved me. I have got to got them back and I will if I have to follow them to the ends of the earth.” According to his story he had met the young woman in Virginia and what appeared to’ be a tender attachment sprung up between them, but this all seems to have been a hollow pre- tense on her part. She had coined his attach- ment into rings, and it appears that he had sent her a number even since the date of the marriage. He expressed a determination to demand the rings from the husbandand if he refused to produce them to sue for their value, —.+__ It Belongs to the People.
