In the Police Court this morning Alphonso Amarosia, an Italian, was charged with selling liquor in Schott's alley without a license. witnesses, Charles Lee and Robert Young, col- ored men, testified to buying beer September 17 and 22. Officers Pearson fied to seeing beer-drinking in the house. The defendant testified that he had sold no liquor in his house since his license expired. On cross-examination he said he had been before the court Mary Joues, colored, testified that she saw Officer Pearson come 1n, and one of the col- ored men staggered and the officer arrested Sarah Scott and Anna Gra: similar testimony. Officer Pearson testified that he arrested one of the witnessce for swearing, and, finding he had made a mistake, let him go. There was no prearrangement. The court fine of #30. The gas had been escaping for some time, and this morning two of the hotel employes went to repair the pipo and stop the waste. They were Andrew Curtin, the engineer, and R B, Rudd, a gas fitter from Springfield, Mass, RUDD WAS ON A LADDER and was arranging some of tho fixings at the top of the post with a chisel in his hand, while Curtin went below with a lighted candle in hi hand to look for the leak. He found it and is now suffering from the effects. When the gas and lighted candle came into contact there was an explosion that made as much noise as a shot gun.
