NIPPED IN THE BUD. A Scheme to Swindle the Race Pool Sellers in This City Falls Through. ‘THE WESTERN UNION WIRES TO THE POOL Rooms TAPPED BY A NEW YORK GANG—THE WOULD-BE SWINDLERS ARRESTED, BUT RELEASED ON THEIR PROMISE TO LEAVE TRE CITY. A party of New Yorkers, who thought they were going to make a big stake out of the pool sellers here by tapping the Western Union wires leading tothe pool rooms near 7th and | Boundary streets, came here a few days ago, but yesterday the intended swindle was nipped j inthe bud. More than a week ago telegraph officials in New York notified the Washington office of the intended wire-tapring. A patrol of linemen was detailed to watch the wires connecting Monte Carlo withthe main office of the telegraph company, and Wednesday morn- ing Lineman Newman discovered that THE WIRY. HAD BEEN rarrep and connected with house No. 1141 7th streot. ‘The work of tapping the wire and inserting tho “loop” was a clever job. Chief Operator Bender and his assistant, Mr Bugbee, were notified of the result of the tinemon’s investi- gation, and yesterday afternoon Detective Raff, with several policemen from tha second pre- cinct, went to house No, 1141 7th street and found that the wire was run into the room on the second floor of the house. ‘The officers surrounded the premises and made the attack from the front and rear, THREE MEN AND A WOMAN ARRESTED. Some of the persons interested in the mat- ter were in the room and they came down stairs to seo what the officers wanted, and they soon learned. There were three menand a woman and they were all arrested. ‘They gave their namesas William Johnson, William Wade, Frank Edmunds and Mary Rayson, There were two or three other persons interested but they were not captured. The back ruom onthe second floor of the house mentioned was searched and in it were found five tele- graph instruments, fifty-four battery jars and everything that goes to make up an operating roout. The peculiar manner in which the fire started and progressed rendered its discov- ory almost impossible for several hours, and it was not until some shavings in the carpenter shop on the second floor mado a bright blaze that the discovery was made. On the third floor of the building is a hall occupied by Co- lumbia Typographical Union as an office, In the hall are several wooden spittoons that were filled with sawdust, Last night some one threw a lighted cigar into one of these recep- tacles, After the sawdust slowly burned through the floor caught fire. Instead of the flames spreading to the sides and rooting they ate a hole through the floor and dropped enough sparks into the carpenter shop to ig- nite the avings and make a bright blaze. Engine company No. 2 was then called out, and the water thrown into the carpenter shop ran through the floor and ceiling into F. Then the result is sent through to the bookmakers and the money is received on the winner. The wire tappers do not pretend to “beat” every race, but select such as pay good money. The unfortunate man is evidently demented and from what he said it is inferred that he is from Langley, Va. He is apparentl: y-five years old and was attired in a heavy suit of clothes and an old straw hat. He appeared in the dock of the Police Court this morning and Judge Miller asked him if he was really a Senator. “Tam,” he replied, “Where are you from?” inquired the court. The man made some indistinct reply. All that he could tell about his home was that it was about 11 miles from here. and when asked if it was Langley he replied that it was, “What is your name?” asked the court, “Hodgby,” replied the accused, «What is your first name?” “Hodge.
