R VOLKSFEST Days of Enjoyment + at the Schuetzen Park—The Fruit Tower, Games, Etc. Schuetzen Park presented a gala appearance yesterday. Colored streamers were suspended from the trees and numerous fings floated in the breeze. The various booths throughout the park wore gaily decorated and the pranc- ing steed of the merry-go-round seemed to be anxious for a spinaround the circle. This festive appearance of things was in honor of the Canstatter Volksfest. It is the festival which in the fatherland celebrates the close of the harvest. Memories of these festa! days in the old country are cherished by those who have sought homes in another land. hence the celebration which was begun yesterday. The organization under the auspices of which the celebration is held has just entesed upon the eighth year of its existence. Ench year these festivals have been attended with success and they now seem to be a permanent institution, THE FRUIT COLUM, During the afternoon yesterday the women and children came out to the park and enjoyed wandering under the trees aud seeing the va- rious objects of interests. The feature of tho festival as it isin the old country is the fruit column. This is arounded tower rising to the height of about 30 feet, It stands ona firm base and 1s surrounded by a fence to protect it from the curious, The tower is an elaborate mosaic of fruits and vegetables. The designs are —o wrought out so that even such an inartistic article asa beet or an Irish potato is biended in a combination that is really effective, Every variety of fruit and vegetable is em- ployed and in the design there are squares diamonds and stars and crosses, The work 1s very cleverly done and is the re- sult of much patient labor, The column ter- minates in a shock of ripened corn. The Amerie¢an eagle with the national colors sus- pended from its mouth crowns the whole aud on each side floats the American and German flags. A large number drove out tothe park Yesterday to see the fruit columm, while the Germans who took part in the festivities looked upon it with great admiration, THE OPENING EXERCISES arranged for yesterday were brief but interest- ing. Mr. E. F. Treiber, the president of the association and chairman of the executive com- mittee, delivered an address in German dedi- cating “the fruit column. He extended a hearty welcome to all to take ‘tin the festivities aud gave an interesting sketch of the history of the organization, The games. which area characteristic feature of this festival, were interrupted by the rain, but they were enjoyed as long as they lasted. PRIZE WINNRDS, One of the old German games which was found to be very interesting to the spectators was the contest between young ladics to see who could the most successfully carry a vessel of water on her head. In this contest prize was awarded to Misa Hadenbrooke po the a Miss ‘waa won by Charlie Loeffler, Muster Ray being & good second. The Moser J.
