Gen, Nettleton, assistant secretary of the Treasury, made the following statement inst night: The Treasury Department today, in addi- tion to its regular disbursements, which are | upusually heavy, paid out $2,345,964 on account of bond purchases and advance interest as fol- lows: . Interest prepaid, $1,063,034; redemp- tion of 43¢8, $535,050; purchase of 4 per cents, 8750,000. THE PURCHASE OF FOUR PER CENTS. The 4 per cents purchased today were ac- cepted at 125, This is the first considorable purchase of 4 per, cents for some time, and the price paid is 1 per cent above that heretofore paid undér the circular of July 19. It is thought that there may be an impression among holders of 4per cent bonds that the 50) ernment has withdrawn from the market lor 4 per cents, This isnot the fact, as Treasury ie ready take s considerabie amount of 4s if they are to be had. NO CAUSE FOR ANXILTY ABOUT GOODS IN BOND, The inquiry instituted yesterday by the Sec- retary of the Treasury develops the fact that the total balance of duties due on all imported | merchendise in bond at the of New York | September 1 was only $17,500,000, Only a/ moderate Of these goods wil! be subject to increased duty: under the schedule in the | new tariff bill, These facts would seem to in- | dicate that antiety based on this feature of the situation has been largely without foundation. AS TO FURTHER MEASURES OF RELIEF, in so far as the existing stringency can reasona- bly be said to be due to the inevitable opera- tions of existing laws governing the collection and disbursement of the government the Treasury Department will not hesi apply such éffective remedies as the law per- mitsand the situation requires. The Secre- tary of the easury, Ou his return to Washing. ton from New England, will in New York tomorrow and will adopt such a course as shall seem to him timely and calcuiated to meet the difficulty as it exists, It is anticipated that one of the minor meas- tres of relief for the market that dopted by th Tt in advance of — of government de known as currency 6's, —_——— Plead Guilty to a Charge of Forgery. “Iam only going to say one word,” said Theodore Birch, a driver of one of Leishear's express wagons when arrested yesterday by Detective Horne and Detective John Lloyd of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. Carr thought that 10th street from F atreet to H should also be included in this item, but Mr. Smith argued agai Carr insisted upon his amendment, but was put to a vote it was lost. Mr. Smith, however, immediately offered another amendment to include the paving of 10th street from F to G, and this was carried. After the pa’ dule was completed the schedule for gi ud regulating was taken up and adopted. Upon motion of Mr. Girourd the entire schedule was then adopted. ASPHALT BLOCKS DISCURSED.
