4 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTO {nesnY & Noes... Kanon, THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Lecal Cirewlation of any Newspaper in the Werid, and a» am Advertising Medium ts worth more than sil the ether papers published in Washington. Ses ‘The Tillmanites, as was expected, captured the democratic state convention in South Caro- Jina and nominated the ticket without opposi- thom. The leading ‘‘straightout” organ, the Charleston News and Courier, has given ite ad- hesion to ticket and platform. A singular fact in connection with the action of the convention is that only two out of eight of the state officers nominated are farmers, Mr. Tillman bimeelf, nominated for governor, and J. E. Tindall, the nominee for secretary of state. The othersare lawyers. The platform denounces the MeKin- Jey tariff bill, declaring that ite passage by Congress will encourage trusts, combines and monopolies; it denounces the Lodge force bill in most bitter terms and strongly condemns the action of Speaker Reed and his followers, demands the enactment of laws that will re- move the burdens of the people, relieve the existing agricultural depression and do full Jastice to the farmers and laborers. Further, the sbolition of national banks is de- manded and that all money issued by the government shall be legal tender in payment of all debts, both public and private; ‘Bhat Congress shall legislate to effectually pre- yent dealing in futures of all agricultural products; that provision shall be made for the ‘taxation of incomes of individuals and the sur- plus of corporations, The residue of the plat- form is devoted to state topics. The conven- tion would abolish the board of agriculture and devolve its duties, &c., on the Clemson Agricultural College, and it insists that the Jatter should be as liberally sustained as the lit- erary departments of the State University. A ‘very significant demand is that for a new con- stitutional convention. The outcome of this convention, foreseen since the recent primary convention, insnres reasonable harmony of the dominant party at the approaching election. ‘Whether the political and social elements that have fought each other so bitterly up to the last moment will be able to continue in politi- cal association will depend in a large measure on tho use made of their power by the new action in control of the state. i Ticino, the Swits canton, nearest to and most like Italy, has rebelled against the local gov- ernment and expelled all of its members who were not killed or imprisoned. The federal government has sent troops to the scene of re- volt. This eanton is the most turbulent in the confederation. It was supposed that the referendum, which was adopted in 1383, and which had been efficacious in other cantons, would promote coneord. The referendum is the submission of laws to a popular vote by the assembly. About forty years ago the Swiss federal governmert was strengthened, and it Was supposed then that no further trouble would ensue between the cantons or between the parties in the individual cantons. Next to our own the Swiss is the most interesting ex- periment im federal government. The present revolt will probably be short-lived. a Gov. Campbell of Ohio has exploded the scheme of Col. P. William Copeliar to prove that the gerrymander in that state is legal, and the republicans will, therefore, be com- Pelled to carry the state on their merits as usual, barring the election of Gov. Campbell, which was the result of a loose peg in the board. In an open fight the Ohio democrat is no sort ofa mateh for the Ohio republican. In fact, the Ohio republican can beat anything, in- eluding his own party. oo It is claimed that the liquor question had something to do with the result in Maine. Congressman Dingley’s paper, the Lewiston Journal, says: “The large increase of the republican plu- rality of Maine over that usually given ina non-presidential year is ‘undonbiedly due in part to the license wwue which the second democratic contention made.
