The Men Who Saved the American Whalemen in 1871 to Be Reimbursed. Among the private bills recently passed by the House of Ieprosentatives is one awarding a hberal suta of mouey towards the losses eus- tained by the ow: of five whaliug ships in rescuing some nine hundred shipwrecked offi- cers and men from the frozen regions of the Arctic ocean in the year 1871, The owners of these whale ships have been before nearly every Congress for nineteen years. Ex-Con- gressman Crapoof the first Massachusetts dis- trict and ex-Congressman Bowman of the fifth Massachusetts district introduced bills and did a great deal of work in the matter while they were in Congress, Mr. Candler of the ninth Massachusetts district introduced the bill dur- ring his former term in Congress and again at the present session, und has been indefatigable in urging the House to give the matter its at- tention, The bill was referred to a subcom- mittee of the committee on claims, and Mr, Smith of the twentieth [lhnois district, xe chair- man of the subcommittee, made an exhaustive examination of the mattcr. and through his recommendation a unanimous report:was made in favor of the bill, though on figures consid- erably less than the petitioners claim was the actual loss to them occasioned by abandoning their whaling voyages and making the rescue. The bill is now pending on the Senate side and is in charge of Senator Hoar, who has intro- duced it in at least three Congresses, Senator Dawes introduced itin one or more Con- Gresses. It is snid that several of the owners of these whale ships became financially em- barrassed in consequence of their great losses in making this rescue. They had these nine hundred shipwrecked human beings on board the rescuing whale ships forty days and landed them all in safety. The whale ships were fitted outat greatexpense fora two years’ cruise.
