The burdens of life seemed almost greater than I could bear, and the troubles of the day pursued me through the quiet hours of the night, visions of in- stallmeut bills gave me horrid nightmares and sleep made me tired. I read Grasty"s advertisement, went to see lity stock, iuade my calculations, quit buying on credit aud now life’s s pleasure." ‘Thus spoke s man who thought he had been getting a great accommods- tion in having some one ready to claim his cash almost before he earned it. There are thousands of people iu Washington today who are living as he haddone, Now I only ask you to use just alittle COMMON SENSE and compare my prices with any house in the city and Filsave you something right along. And here is the reason: I buy for cash, I sell for cash, I get all Ican fora dollar, Idon't spend » dime chasing # cent, my expenses are not one-third of houses in other parts of the city, aud I am willing to give you the benefits. It Is Sti Enveloped in Mystery With- out a Clue in Sight. THE POLICE DONOT THINK IT A CASE OF NCR- DER—THEY STICK TO THE SUICIDE THEORY CORONER PATTERSON THINKS THE IDENTIFICA- TION WAS NOT CONCLUSIVE, Although the only identification of the dead body found in the river above Georgetown in July as that of the missing Charles Carroll An- drews was the identification of the teeth by Dr. Coyle of Baltimore, who had done the missing man's dental work fourteen years ago, Andrews’ friends and relatives are satisfied that the body was nono other than that of the missing man. While some persone are still in- clined to believe that Andrews was murdered | the police officers are fully satisfied that the dead man committed suicide. DRAGGING FoR THE CLOTHING. Detectives Horne and Mahon are still ivesti- gating the case and today they visited the Po- tomac near where ths body was found to drag for the dead man’s clothes. The officers at- tach no importance to the discovery of the missing man’s watch in Fulton's pawnshop, where it was placed by Andrews in the partof June. The ticket for the watch was found in the missing man’s drawer, at the oftice of Emmart & Quartley orators, on 13th Street, of which firm Andrews was the Wash- ington agent and was turned over to Frenk Andrews, the missing man's brother, and for some reason, best known to himself, he nothing about it until a few days ago, when the watch was recovered. Andrews, as heretofore published, lived in Baltimore, and he had a monthly or quarterly commutation ticket on the more and Po- tomac railroad. So far as can be aacert that ticket has never been presented on the railroad since the disappearance of its owner. Whether the identification thus far made will satisfy the officers of the Beneficial [n- downment Association that the body was that of Andrews or not remains to be se ax uo root has yet been offered to the association of ius death, If the body was really the rem. of the missing man, and it ultimately turns out that he conaalited cuiciet » insurance policy will probably throw some ton the reason for taking his life, which it isstated was FINANCIAL EMBARRASSME Andrews, it is stated, had been living beyond | his means, He traveled with people who had money and he of course had to spend consid- | erable cash. Mr. Dan J. McCarty, the con- tractor and builder, wes ouc of Andrews’ friends him. He (McCarty) had to pay the note and secing no prospects for the retaru or payment of the money he was made the beneticiary of the insurance policy. It was purely a business transaction so far as McCarty was conccraed. | That was in March of this year. ANDREWS’ INSIRUCTIONS ABOUT THE PoLic Later on it is said that Andrews gave in- structions in connection with the insurance money as to what disposition should be mack of itafter his bills had been settled, Exactly what time those directions were given could not be ascertained, and that has an important bearing on the cases, because if it was given shortly before he disappeared the officers will claim that it supports their theory that he contemplated suicide. So far as the watch was concerned Andrews stated after he had pawned it that it had been stolen from him. that is what some mem- bers of his family thought untit the pawn ticket showed up this week. That Andrews was living beyond his means there can be no doubt. He collected 45 of his employers’ money a day or two before he disappeared. and when on Friday night he appeared in May G house im the “Division” be did not money about him. THE MORNING HE WAS LAST SERN was the time that he should have made his cash returns to headquarters in Baltimore, and, uot having the money to return, it is thought he sought death as the only way out of the trouble, Concerning the alleged forged checks he had given to several persons it is claimed that the: were not forged, but that he simply wrote his employers’ indorsement on the checks as their agent and also signed his own name beneath theirs, That, it is stated, be prot thority to do in the course of his ba It was learned today from one of Andrews" friends that he wrote a letter concerning future which indicated that he conte: mplate i suicide, but the name of the person to whom the letter was addressed could not be ascer- tained, THE IDENTIFICATION NOT CONCLUSIVE To Tut CORONER. “The identification is not conclusive to my mind.” said Coroner Patterson to a Sran ro- porter this morning, “although the body was probably that of Andrews, This is not the first time that tho indeutification of a man has been made by his teeth. but in some cases, even after the insurance money had been paid, it turned out that the man was alive “The case,” continued Dr, Patterson, “was simply one of an unknown man who had bee drowned. There were no marks of violence on his bedy and nothing to indicate that he was the victim of foul play. Dr. Patterson said that he’could never have identitied drowned man as Andrews from the picture. From the appearance of the body he thought the deceased was a man who would have weighed 180 pounds, and he would not have been surprised had his weight reached 200 pounds. in making this calculation the doctor took in consideration the fact that the body was terribly swollen when it was re- covered, MR. GARDNER THINKS ANDREWS WAS MURDERED. Mr. Lawrence Gardner of the Endowment Association said to a Stan reporter today that no claim had been made for Andrews’ insur- ance money other than a mere notification of his death, Mr. McCarty, the beneticiar; said, had filed no proofs of Andrews’ death He een furnished with the blanks and is now preparing them. Mr. Gurdner said that the case appeared to him a rather singular one and be was firm in the opinion that the man | was murdered. When the body was found it was viewed by Coroner Patterson, but Deputy Coroner Schaei- fer afterward examined it, @ Srar reporter being present, There were no marks of sio- lence on the body. and from its condition identification by ordinary means seemed to be impossible. —— THE VETERAN FIREMEN, Arranging for Their Trip to Chester, Pa.—A Chance to See a Launch, Aspecial meeting of the Veteran Volunteer Firemen’s Association was held at Meyer's Hall last evening, Mr. James H. Richards, pres- ident, and Mr, J. J. Peabody, secretary. After arranging to send their hose carriage to Ches- ter, Pa., on the 17th instant, to be drawn in the procession there the following day, letters were directed to be sent to the Secretary of the Navy and the District Commissioners asking for leave of absence for that day for members of the association employed in the navy yard and under the Commissioners. Mr. John W. Thompson, the marshal, stated that Messrs. Joshua Lioyd and H. L. Gettier would be the axmen and Jobn Scofield and T. F. Cissell torch bearers of the parade. The ununiformed members were requested to ap- pear in dark clothes, dark hat and white gloves and they would be assigned directiy behind the music, and no one unless uniformed or so attired would be allowed in the line. Mem- bers should go in full uniform. The New York men shoot in military matches with a Remington *quick-twist” gun that is in many respects more desirable than the Springfield, This Renungton is given points whenever it is in a contest with the Spruigfield. The dis- crimination is less marked in that particuiar than in contests where “special” rifles are lowed to enter into competition with the United States Springfield, These “specials” have Ver- nier sights, fitted with spirit jevels and all the appliances which go far toward absolute and uuswerving accuracy, and yet im the governor match the Npringticld 1s allowed but one point handicap in three scores. If the truly military men and guns win anything here it will be by dint of hard work and a degree of skill not te be looked for. There will be no promiscuous and scattering entries into matches so far as the District rifle~ men are concerned. The subject has been pretty thoroughly discussed and entries will only be made in matches where the men and the rifle have a chance to make st least #re~ spectabie showing. A MOVE. ‘This evening, after supper, the team bade am affectionate adieu to Capt.
