A fine day grected the players in the national Jawn tennis tournament yesterday at Newport, The attendance was the largest of the tourna- ment, it being the closing day and the two great matches for the championship in both singles and doubles were on. There were sev- eral thousand spectators on the grounds sur- rounding the courts, The championship doubles were begun first between Hobart and Hall, the crack eastern team, and Carver and Ryerson, the leading western players in doubles, and the match was watched with in- terest until nearly 11:30, when Campbell, the winner of allcomers yesterday, appeared to face Slocum, the champion of two years for the championship in singles, Then interest was centered upon this match, During the first set it looked hke Campbell was the winner, as he played his maguitic head game, repeat, placing the ball bevon Slocum’s reach. He took the tirst two games and then dropped one to Slocum. The fourth and fifth went to Campbell, and then Slocum took another and his last, Campbell adding the seventh and eighth to his score. The sec- ond set was closer. Slocum opened by placing the first game to his credit. Campbell tied the score and then took the lead by winning the third game, Then Slocum made it 2 all. Campbell led and Slocum made it “all,” and then took the odd game. Campbell made the score even again and then Slocum won two in succession and the set, Campbell's playing was vory sharp and his placing brilliant, but toward the last of the set Slocum made it less effective by returning well-placed balls and in return doing some placing himself. The third set was also close. Slocum again won the open- ing game, and then they alternated until the score stood at 3 all, when Campbeil ran it out at6-3. One more set finished the match and gave Campbell the championship. It was a quick one, Slocum taking but one game. Campbell played. his coolest, casiest and most effective game, while Slocum played hard, but could not do anything against Campbell's great work, Campbell's warmest friends were sur- prised at the ease with which he beat his oppo- nent and took his rank as the leading ea tennis player of the country. Again it was hi faultless judgment and sureness of play which won him the match. The contest occupied but an hour and a quarter. The double match was a long and close one. Carver and Ryerson won the first set easily, giving the eastern players but one game. Hobart and Hall then took their turn at win- ning two sets before dropping another. The fourth set was the best of the match, each team winning until the score ran up to ‘deuce, and then out at 8-6 in favor of the westerners. ‘The fifth set, which was the decisive one, went to the east and with it the championship of the United States in doubles, The match lasted two honra, Both teams did good work and proved themselves experts and pretty evenly matched. These two championship matches close the tenth annual tournament of the National Lawn Tennis Association. siae ‘eee. smi COUNTESS VON GLUMER’S VISIT.
