THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, THE EVENING STAR, ING STAR has the fallest Local Ctrealation of any trac se the oe and as an Advertising 3 jum is wort! mere than all the other papers published in Washington. Winning the world’s fair in a square contest with three other cities, Chicago attracted the world’s attention if it did not entirely enlist the world’s sympathy. It was expected that she would sustain her great reputation for pluck, energy and thoroughness in all the pre- liminary and subsequent arrangements for the exposition, which was to signalize one of the greatest events in modern history. The loca- tion of the site having been decided after a pro- longed and animated struggle, it was hoped that appreciating what had thus beer won, the legis- Jature and local authorities would unite heartily with the world’s fair management in carrying Out necessary plans for locating the grounds and getting them ready for the exposition. ‘The directors have apparently been active in their efforts, assisted by the ablest fiuanciers of Chicago. and have at last overcome all oppo- sition to the completion of the state organiza- tion. Both the needed ordinance and the legislative act have been secured. Next came the question of site, when two difficulties arose. Congress, the commissioners and the directors agreed that the exposition should be held on the lake shore, but differences existed as to the precise spot, both among the newspapers and the citizens, and the matter has not yet been settled. The ordinance required the use of not jess than one hundred and fifty acres of the lake front, which ‘was to be made into a park afterward, and for- bade all arrangement with the Illinois Central Railroad Company. These restrictions rendered the acceptance of the ordinance impracticable in the opinion of alarge majority of the direct- ors. In consequence & new ordinance is asked for. Negotiations are pending with the South Park commissioners and others. Meantime it would appear to be the part of fairness and justice to refrain from harsh criticism of the | directory, who are barrassed, it is. believed, by greater dificulties than surrounded the man- agers of the Paris exposition or any of the previous world’s fairs, ee Labor has got all the weather today that could be desired—that is to say, plenty of good sir and cheerful sunshine. The organizations | are making rational use of it in a lively turnout on all the thoroughfares. Spreading them- selves over city and suburb. the great Potomac and that inland sea, the Chesapeake, the rep- resentatives and factors of American industry give the day to full enjoyment. In sympathy with them Tue Star and the entire public wish them merry moments, and fresh hearts for to- morrow’s toil. a Steubenville is a pleasant little town in Ohio which bas been in existence for nearly a cen- tury and growing im grace and real estate booms, daily. It was named after a baron, aud ‘until 1884 it considered that its original con- ; nections with nobility was enouga, but in that Year one of its richest maidens married a baron and Steubenville wore a crest and went into alignment with other American towns which had « fiuancial grip on the titular dignitaries of the effete monarchies of Europe. But it was not to last forever, as nothing earthly does. and last week Steubeuville’s baron—Lagerfelt of Sweden, vice consul at Pitteburg—turned up short $20,000 or more, and a lot of Pittsburg aud other people holding various fraudulent certificates of stock as collateral, That's about all, except the usual useful lesson it teaches, Next. oo “Labor will be celebrated today by labor organizatious thronghout the country. The trade organizations of Washington are distin- guished for the self-respecting character of their membership, and they know how to enjoy ® holiday in an orderly, good-tempered way. si 2 stiears re —— Itis reported that an English syndicate has secured an option on the Aspen silver mines at €27,000,000. Now if the greenbackers can get a greenback bill through they may be able to sell their greenback plant to an English syndi- cate also. These syndicates will buy anything there's money in. 9 The St. Puul Piomwer Press asks “what city wall come forward and reiieve Chicago of its world’s fair elephant?’ Well, Washington isn’t running after second-hand animals, but she has a fiue zoological garden site, and if Chicago wants a stall for her stock she knows where she can get it. $$$ ____ Brazil being ready to respond to the Blaine reciprocity idea. what's to hinder the whole program going through immediately? Sir Edwia Arnold first wrote “The Light of Asia,” then he wrote “The Light of the Work: now he is going to marry a Japanese girl. Is this arithmetical progression, evolution or a tequence flush? ee The Courier-Journal, which is giving good Advice in morals and manners to members of Congress, thus politely and modestly concludes 4 few remarks: “They talk as they like, they legislate as they like and they don’t care a d—n for anybody.” ——- | The Philadelphia Press says “an $8,000,000 | deal in street railways is afoot m Boston.” | What it is doing afoot with 4,000,000 when car | tickets are so cheap does not appear. <a Editor Hatton's hosts of friends will be glad | te know that he is recovering from his dan- gerous illness, —— ee Jacob Seligman of Michigan is worth $4,000,- Q00 per foot running measure.
