Salvator is the greatest horse living. He conquered space yesterday at Monmouth at the rate of a mile in 13534, Fully ten thousand people were there to see, The chestnut lowered the fastest time ever made in a race, the 1.3914 of Raveloe, 3% seconds and eclipsed Ten Broeck’s performance against time by 4\¢ seconds, No such flight of speed had ever been seen by those assembled yesterday and the general opinion was that the record will remain unbroken for many years. There wag some doubt at one time whether the trial would be made, as Trainer Byrnes was loath to let Salvator start unless he was ridden by Isaac Murphy, than whom there is no greater judge of pace living. But Isaac was under the ban for drinking too many milk punches and top; xg bees off with jineris ‘and ginger ale. Mr, yrnes, after a consultation with Mr. Haggin, owner of the incomparable iece of horse flesh. resolved to get the best yy possible. Tho original intention was to have Salvator carry weight for age, or 122 pounds, im his effort, but Mr. Byrnes advised his employer that the race should be governed by the same conditions as those of Ten Broeck's essay at the tech, This was 110 ands, and Mr. ithers being agreeabie, Martin Bergen was selected as the jockey to ride. The big chest- nut was saddled and mounted by Bergen to give him a short preliminary spin and get all the blood dancing through his viens and un- limber the network of muscies that were to propel his 1,200 pounds through the air with the — of a locomotive, Roxette, a chestnut y Joe Hooker, outof Rosa B., a full sister to C, H. Todd, winner of the American Derby at Chicago three years ago, and a stable com- panion of Salvator, who been worked with the champion gince the sale of Kern, was mounted by a stable boy and sent along so that the big fellow would not feel lonesome. They trotted past the stand, and around to the bend near the railroad branch of Eatontown, and then broke together. Salvator fought for his head and drawing from the filly at every stride, came down the long stretch ata terrific clip. Trainers Charles Littlefield and J. W. Rogers, by com- mon consent two of the most accurate timers in the United States, were invited into the stand to assist the regular timers, Col. Frank Hi = of Maryland, D. D. Withers and James way " An enthusiastic throng of admirers sur- rounded Salvator as the finishing touches were being put to his toilet. The noble feilow seemed to realize that. he was the cynosure of alleyesand he was every inch a king as he lifted his head and sutveyed the crowd. The saddle was carefully adjusted, the girths tight- ened and Bergen—wearing the Haggin orang: blue sleeves and cap. and looking almost as proud as Salvator—elbowed his way through the crowd and was assisted into the saddle. Marty knotted the reins, catefully examined the stirrup leathers aud settling himself in the scat. prepared to go to the post, Trainer Byrnes ran ahead and was out on the track betore Salvator, followed by Rosette and Namouna, the last named a two-year-old sister to Ballarat, who were to act as pace makers, hove in sight of the waiting thousands. The huge overhang of the grandstand was a sound- ing board that caught up the cheers and multi plicdthem o thousandfold, until the chorus was deafening. The lads on Rosette and Na- mouna did not sport silk, but they looked as though they understood their business, and subsequent developments proved that they did. Salvator's march of triumph continued until he turned the angle for the straight course and set out for the post ata hand gallop, followed by his humbler companions, Byrues was a uarter of a mile up the stretch, and had evi- dently been all dvcr the course, as he hailed Bergen when he passed him, and said: “The going is best in the center here, keep along here and you will get the best of it.” Ber- gen nodded assent and continued on his way. At the half-mile pole Byrnes halted and placing Rosette, who vas to act as pace maker for the final half of the journey, well over toward the rail where she would be out of danger, awaited the coming of the best horse he ever trained. Mr. Caldwell told Bergen \o take as much space as he pleased for a running start, and the boy didnot draw rein until he was « furlong beyond whore the gray-hnired starter stood, flag in hand. Namouna, with her boy's eyes as bigand bright as beads with excitement, took her po- sition at the post, and the instant Bergen turned Salvator head and permitted tie gal- lant chestnut to get well under way the lad got Namouna going. Down toward the start Salvator rushed, gain- ing impetus at each bound, and when he flashed past the starting post he was running for a man’s life, his flag-like tail sweeping gracefully in the breeze, his neck outstretched and eye flashing. Namouna was well under way and about ten lengths ahead, bat Salvator wore down her lead as his white legs played in and out with that machine-like regularity that isso dear to the lover of the perfect race horse, There was no pounding. no waste ac- tion, no lost power, and those amile away in the grand stand awaiting his coming with bated breath could not help commenting on the smooth, easy way in which he flew over the ground. The first quarter pole wa passed in 23%; sec- onds, the flag falling as Salvator's nose showed on line with the pole. Namouna was making desperate efforts to hold her lead, the boy kick- ing her ribs and urging her to her best en- deavors. A hundred yards further the king of the turf 4 her with that wonderful rush that has raised hope high in the breasts of his backers on rumberless occasions, and painted despair on the faces of those who have had the assurance to back any race horse to defeat him. When the chestnut reached the half-mile pole Namouna is fitteen lengths in the rear. Trainer Byrnes is awaiting him there, and under his instructions Rosette is in mofion when Salvator comes thundering along, his hoofs beating a rataplan on the earth which they seem to touch so lightly. Mr. Byrnes’ watch marks 47 sec- onds, but those in the stand register 47%; sec- onds, and he shouts encouragingly to Bergen. Rosette is a very speedy filly, and she has a marked advantage over her lordly associate, and her tail is waving in Salvator’s face as they surge away for the run home. When the three- quarter pole was Bergen was riding with lis hands, but his steel-shod heels had as yet not visited the glossy sides, nor had the heaving flanks felt the sting of the merciless whip. Salvator is as honest a horse as ever lived, and he was doing all he knew how. His feet spurned the dust, his ears were playing to and fro and lis eyes appeared to be riveted on the expectant and excited multitade in the grand stand, which by this time were on their teet. The hoarse murmur is plainly. distinguisha- ble and Bergen realizes that he is near the goal. A hundred yards more and he is riding hard. the lash falling lightly two or three times and the colt bounds forward with renewed vigor. Bergen, with lowered head, rides as though a kingdom depended on the issue, and the gal- lant horse, answering every call, fairly flies, and vig) the wire in 1.35}¢, eclipsing all records. » aided by her start, per- formed her mission so well that at the finish th in front of Salvator. bles as he hung out 1.35! as the official figures. Mr. Pulsifer was not satisfied at the time that Salvator was Tenny's superior, but when the big chestnut beat Tenny in the champion stakes two wecks ago he yielded the palm to Mr. Haggin's colt. Salvator has now won over @115,000 in stakes and purses during his short but eventful career on the turf. A most singular feature of his career ix that he has been beaten four times, and of those four his conqueror in three im stances was Proctor Knott. Longstreet was the other. At the present season Mr. Haggin, un- Jess he changes his mind, will send Salvator te the stud on his immense Rancho Del Pase Farm in California, There he will be mated with the most highly bred matrons and no doubt there will be a great demand for the Progeny of such an illustrious sire as Salvator is bound to prove himself. From the Toronto Mail This is the time of year at which the unhappy victims of the autumnal form of cstarrhus wstivis commence the explosive sneezing chorus in which for several weeks in every twelve months they take part most unwillingly, but of necessity, The third week in August is to them atime of sadness, for it marks the commencement of their annual captivity, Un- less before then they flee to the mountains they are undone, and a period of musers lies before thom. The favorite ‘city of refuge” for the eneez- ers of the neighboring republic at this time is Kethlehem, in New Hampshire, a resort which. like Muskoka, enjoys the distinction of being exempt from the distressing malady commonly knot as “hay fever.” It is now seventeen years since a few victims who had gathered at this White mountain village to escape their an- nual affliction, formed the United States Hay Fever Association. Since then this organ’ tion has secured a large membership, among its fifty-four vice presidents are many men of note. Its government includes an ad- visory board composed of twenty-five ladics, and 4 record of its proceedings and delibera- tions is published each year. Originally the association was for social purpores ouly, but latterly it has devoted itself to the study of the causes and character of hay fever, and, if possible, remedies for it. This it should be able to do to good purpose, since many of the members are distinguished physicians and scientists, but itis unfortunately the case that little, if any, progress has been made in the work of investigation and cure, It avails little that one member has been able to define hay fever asa “periodic neurotic disease, occur- ring in persons having a peculiar idiosynerasy,” so long ax such persons ure not informed how best to wrestle with that idiosync and ite sternutatory accompaniments. Nor, although it may console them to some extent for what thes “have to endure, it 1s sufficient for them to learn, on the authority of their last year's president, Prof. Samuel Lockwood, that statistics show that, as a rule, the victims of the malady are those who have a superfiuity of brain matter, Nor is there much comfort for them in being told that the disease must be a venerable one, since the Bible informs us that Peter's wife lay sick with wer.” The only ground for contentment is to be found in the fact that precipitate flight to some place of exemption still affords a means of escape. Science has not yet determined what causes hay fever, what it is, or what will cure it. But possibly the Hay Fever Association may be able to throw some light on the subject thie year. It meets this week at Bethichem and will remain in session a week. — “enna The King and the Hymna. From the London Truth. ‘The King of Greece was fearfully bored when at Aix by the sets made at him by professional beauties who had not the talent to conceal their art. One of them hired the fist near his lodg- ing and a piano. Her musical education was neglected. But she knew how to play the Greek hymn, Whenever his majesty returned from the baths she struck itup. If there is an air the king hates more than another it is that one. He has had to listen to it many times every day at Athens for twenty-seven years. Whenever he goes to a casino, concert or opera the or- chestra gives him several bars. In short, it is to him so fearfully hackneyed that it grates on his nerves if, when it is being played, be cannot think of some- thing else and thus shut it out from his ears. But the professional beauty stumbled, and so got involved in false notes that he could not be deaf to her performance, He lost his temper over and over again and sent afer meneage to the landlord to beg that fe would silence her pianoforte. This the land- lord feared to do, as the lady spent money far more freely than the potentate and drew to the hotel rich fools who paid for poor cham) as though it were Widow Clicquot's best.” fhe affair was arranged by a Greek from Marseilles making the acquaintance of the Indy and con- fiding to her some of his majesty's defects. One of them was a born hatred for music, which he thought noise, and the other s taste for frumpish German women who never painted, kept quiet and bad nots soul above knit and darning stockings. The beauty change her tactics accordingly. His majesty was no louger bored by the Greek air and I should not wonder if he sent an order to the diplo- matic person who induced his fair neighbor ve shut up her piano. a Royalty at Cowes. From the London Trath Princess Louise drove the marquis about several times in a ralli cart, upholstered in pig- skin—a smart littio turnout, in which every- thing matched in color, harness, woodwork and pigskin.
