THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C. FRIDAY. AUGUST 29, 1890 W STORY BY KIPLI ‘Tomorrow’s Sixteen-Page Evening Star Will Have It. The sixteen pages of tomorrow's Evextxo Sraz will contain a great deal and, as the little boy said of bis big picture, “You ean look at it along while.” The chief gem in the collec- tion is Rudyard Kipling’s story, “The Mutiny af the Mavericks.” This is the first story Kip- ling has written to order for America and Tue SraR takes special pride in presenting it to its readers. It is in the author's usual graphic, thrilling style and fully the equal of his best tales. Itis mone the less interesting because it describes another side of Irish life and character that has hitherto been left untouched by English authors. Mr. Kipling, who apotheo- sized the typical Irishman in Mulvaney, has dared to describe in Mulcahy another and very different child of Erin. At the same time he spplauds the real Irish hero by portraying him in Horse Egan and Dan Grady, who resist the | temptation to commit treason and make the mutiny of the Mavericks a classic. Look out for tomorrow's Stan. Among its contengs the following may be announced: THEY HELP RUN THE GOVERNMENT (Iustrated.) Assistant secretaries who Reep the great de- partments going. A Sensation in the House—Republicans Favor aud Democrats Uppose It. reed- Mr. Edmunds’;resolution, introduced in the Senate this morning, providing for a recess from September 19 to November 10 created something of a sensation in the House. There had been some little previous talk of a recess instead of an adjournment, but the plan had never taken form. Many members were of the opinion that the Ist of October was the very earliest dateon which an adjournment or a recess could be taken. Republicans in the House this morning were generally in favor of the recess plan as a means of saving trouble, it being the general opinion ou this side of the House that in case of an adjournment a special session would be called immediately after the election in November. On the other hand the | democrats were adverse to such a plan on ac- | countof the additional time which would be given for the consideration of the federal elec- thon dill. democrats therefore in both the House and Senate may be expected to oppose any recess proposition. EXPRESSIONS OF OPINION ON THK HOUSE SIDE. Mr. Cannon said that, personally, he thought some plan for a recess would best meet ail re- large amount of trouble. was not so favorable to the Vermont Senator's resolution and his approval was expressed in the mildest mann mong the democrats adverse criticisms were the rule. IX FAVOR OF & RECESS FROM SEPTEMBER 19 TO MARCH 4 Mr. Bland seid there was just one rece resolution which he would favor, and if Mr. Edmunds would amend his resolution to pro- vide for a recess from September 19 to March 4 he th it he could ‘ise tl the semorrat, x imelcounts Saas Congress,” r. “am uicker it adjourns and the longer it stay: * sou the better it will please the peo) Mr. Crisp thought the resolution would never materialize into anything. The sentiment in the House on the resotuticn shows approval from the republicans and position from the democrats on account of the extra time given tothe election bill. The democrats will demand an adjournment and Jeave the responsibility of an extra session with the administration. It is the general opinion in the House that the President strongly favors & recess instead of an adjournment. 1, 1890. pee Se Be PEACE IN CENTRAL AMERICA, An Offictal Dispateh From Minister Miz- ner—A Satisfactory Settlement. Young Abe Gradwohl, a clerk in his father's 7th street store, the Oriole, is by no means as popular with the girls in the shop as he might be. Last evening, so the story goes, he over- heard some of them talking in the store and he lost his temper and went back to his father and reported that they were fomenting discord. When Miss Mattie Webster, a pretty young clerk, informed him that he was nothing but a tale-bearer he became enraged with her and_ slappe: her sharply on both cheeks. Then the trouble began. Miss Webster and one or two others threaten to leave tomorrow. This afternoon Miss Webster, who says she is alone in the world, with none to resent the insult she suffered, appeared at the Police Court and swore out a warrant for Gradwohl’s arrest. —to—— Pennsylvania Ceasus Returns.
