THE EVE} WASHINGTON: THURSDAY August 21, 1590. CROSBY S, NOYES ..Eatto THE EVENING STAR bas the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World, and ns an Advertising Medium is worth more than all the other papers published in Washington. ————— ‘There should not be anything fanny in con- nection with a tomb or its occupant, but there is something downright Indicrous in the wailing ‘whereases and resolutions of the Grant Monument Association of New York in its pitiful protest to Congress. In its first whereas the association “deplores the recent action of the Senate” because it ‘would result in the removal of the remains of Gen. Grant” if carried out, as though the Senate had taken action to remove the body for the purpose of keeping itthere as an advertisement for the tavern and livery business, In the next the association calls attention to the fact that the interment was made at Riverside ‘‘under a most solemn and impressive ceremonial,” as if it were customary to bury people in New York in® rococo manner with picnic accompani- mente; it also calls attention to the fact that the President of the United States and the army and navy officially asvisted at the cere- monies, which is a further argument in favor of Stableside-on-the-Hudson; and lastly, the association assures the Senate that “the people of the entire coun- try would look upon any effort tending to the removal of the remains as a des- ecration of the grave of Gen. Grant.” In other words the Senate has desecrated the grave of Gen. Grant and the monument association is 80 solicitous for the welfare of the Senate that it sends in this petition asa sort of self-preserv- ative before “the people of the entire country.” Desecration is an excellent word for the New Yorkers to use when they have stood by for five long years with five hundred thousand Jong purses and seen nothing rise about the tomb at Riverside except a stable and the ef- fluvium of their own neglect and the condem- nation of “the people of the entire country.” Having relieved itself of the whereases the asso- ciation by its executive committees resolves first that it enter its solemn protest against this proposed action of Congress, and second that a copy of the resolutions be forwarded to the Senators and Representatives from the state of New York, who will no doubt read this official tale of woe of the Grant Monument Association of New York—which, by the way, is a queer name for an association of which the least accomplishment is the monument—with tears in thetr eyes and at once proceed to have the body of the dead general properly buried and surrounded at Arlington. as a partial atoae- ment for the neglect their state has shown it during the past five years. es So much interest is taken in what is oc- curring im the United States Senate that the | September elections excite small attention ex- | cept im the states immediately concerned. On the Ist proximo Arkansas will vote for state officers, ou the next day Vermont and Wyoming THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. ING STAR. | Hie Besr Youxo Mass Cuorce.
