_——— THE EVENING STAR, ~ WASHINGTO? -Angust 16, 1290. —=— : CROSBY S. NOYES. ——— THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World, and Advertising Medium is worth more than all the ether papers published in ho monomaeare 3AURE'S POPULAR SHOPPING PLACE, SEVENTH STREET. Mr. Baker of New York took ‘the House out yesterday and had fun with it. He attempted to call the wanderers back to the fold and shut off the supply of campaign spouting, but the Speaker would not permit, even when one of the leading spouters is Roger Q. Milla, Roger Q Mills is paired with Major William MeKin- ley. A pair counts for a good deal witha strong hand to back it. And the Speaker's band is not weak. Mr. Baker knows that now. He knew it before, but untried knowledge does not = alwi serve. The Speaker knows beans when the bag is open. He knows, also, that an educational campaign is handy to have in the political family. Everybody in Congress seemed to know the same thing yesterday except Mr. Baker of New York. The Speaker picked Mr. Baker up and lifted him over nearer the educa- tional center. And he put down hard. Whether the Speaker had any right to do so does not enter. He did so, and after awhile possibly he may examine into the righteousness ef bis deed. It is a kind of a parliamentary lynch law, mayhaps, but it goes in this Con- gress, It went for Mr. Baker. He will not soon get over it. He does not return to the next Congress, and just now very likely he is gled of it. As before stated, Mr. Baker is a re- publican. So is the Speaker. There are re- publicans and republicans. There are Speak- ersand Speakers. But there is only one Tom Reed. —— President Welling is right. Washington is the place for the Baptist University, baving advantages of & high order that neither New York nor Chicago enjoys. But a New York dispatch says that the institution will be located at Chicago. If there has been # decision in the matter looking to its location elsewhere it would be well for the interests of the great de- nomination itself, as well as of the public at large, to reconsider it and settle down on the best place for national universities, the capital of the United States. $$ ——_____ In that Ohio district (republican) represented by Congressman Smyser there have grown up since the war a large number of men who were too young to have a war record, but who are Bot now too young to have a yearning desire to serve their country in some other capacity, atso much per serve. These men have on various cceasions been thwgrted in their desire to sacrifice themselves on their country’s altar by the old soldier element, which was still actively engaged in that business itself, and the result has been that the civilian patriots organized a “combine,” so to speak. against the ex-military patriots, hoping thereby to corner the government emolument and per- quisite market. But the scheme has not worked very successfully. It was a little too early im the morning and the civilians, in reach- jag for the veterans. forgot to take into the count the Sons of Veterans. the Grandsone of Veterans, the Stepsons of Veterans and the various other organizations for the perpetua- tion of the fruits of Victory in War, and such a patriotic hullabaloo was raised out in the neighborhood of Akron, Wooster, Medina, Wadsworth et al. that the civilians party broke for the tall timber, and left post offices, emolu- ments, perquisites and everything else in the lands of the enemy, and they are still in the woods waiting until some settlement is reached by which they may return, without getting themselves hanged for treason, stratagem or spoils, though it must be confessed they got no spoils, albeit they cared for nothin; save that. As the blood of the gartyrs is the seed of the church, so is the blood of these suffering | patriots the seed of = new creed in politics, which is bound to obtain as time moves up and | the affairs of stute begin to find themselves in the hands of men who have come to manhood since the stirring years of '61- —— + The all-knowing paragrapher is assuming in numerous democratic papers that there will be ne reapportionment before November because on the basis of 64.000,000 for the United States and 181,000 for a Congress district New York would lose one member, the consequence of which would be that the entire delegation would be chosen on one ticket and would be almost certainly captured by the democrats. —— a The Post Office authorities will have the ques- tion to decide mm # postmaster’s case, whether a man can at one and the same time be a good republican, a good postmaster gambler. The P.M. at Paducah, trying to ) work that combination. —— The Freach would better tike the friendly bint of Minister Reid and improve the quality of their wines imported into the United States fore excluding any more American pork on charge, unsustained by facts, that it is un- healthy.
