The Reckless Daring of the Cowboys With a Big Contract on Hand. From the Kansas City Star. ‘The marketing of its beef is the sole source from which flows revenue to a ranch, and the collection and gathering thereof—selecting beeves is the most scientific part of ranch work—engages September, October, Novem- ber and part of December of each year. The beef herds, aggregating 4,000 to 5,000 head of cattle each, in charge of an outfit of about ten men, including the ‘ take themselves to a convenient point, sometimes 200 to 300 miles distant, The excursion is slow and, by virtue of the strength and spirit of the cattle as well as the stormy season of the year, not unfraught with danger. Stampedes are the rule rather than the reverse, and sometimes are very expensive in their cost from lost and injured cattle. To this trip are usually assigned the most skilled and comp. tent of the men, and albeit the work is arduous ‘on account of the dignity it in have “gone with beef to Dodge, joy-fraught spree incidental to the close of a successful expedition of this vort, all the boys are willing and anxious to be counted in. Nor was it the aboriginal’ intent to permis a herd to wind its valuable length across this domain without tribute. The method of tax collection in vogue with these officers of savage revenue was simple and com- plete. From the first jump of the first steer the cowboy, as dauntless as a Cossack and blindly true to his trust, goes with the herd, No man ever takes a more dangerous jaunt. The night as dark as Egypt; the coun- try new and unknown; perhaps at any second to go leaping from a precipice or crashing uy against a wall of rock; cattle, terror-1 charging on all sides; the certain result of a fall being a crushing by the galloping hoofs of the herd; still this American Arab never halts nor wavers, but with rein held high and loose and spurs bloody to the boot, whiris his half- broken broncho through at thirty miles an Me Laave jyl7-lm EN-ROOM BRICK 18 per month. —THE BEST SE’ ist completed; 1 be had at a bargain, and ternis made to SWOKMSTEDT .A NICE SEVEN & BKADLE}, & Ok SALE—ML. This assembly contains all the employes of the Harlem division who are Knights of Labor. Many of the men will be put back to work, Mr. Webb said last night. Many of the men who went out on Sunday at Hudson have tendered their resignations to the Knights of Labor and reported for work. The signal tower is now filled with oid bands, and the tracks through the city are fully protected, The wrecking train went out yesterday for the first time since Friday. Today the agents bere will receive freight for shipment between Hudson and New dork. Freight trains will be started from here, taking up ali way freight south, but nothing will be shipped from bere north, The firemen are working as usual at Syre- cuse, and Axsistant Superintendent Goold of the western division dows not expect any new trouble, but is confident, on the contrary, that by this evening all trains on the New York Central and Hudson River railroad, freightes well as passengers, will be runuing just as be fore the strike of the Knights of Labor, At East Syracuse the Pinkerton men have been reinforced by twenty-five special deputy sheriffs, one of the two divisions that raised the passenger blockade on Monday evening having been sent to West Albany. The firemen have been in open sympathy with the Koighte of Labor ail aiong, and though they are still at work many of them admit that they expect to be ordered out Of the twenty-eight trains stalled in the yard on or before Sunday night six or seven have got . One or two of those reasons leaked out yesterday when Lee's auda- cious accusation that the officers of the road were circulating a “forged letter” was known. It was reported that a peculiar interview be- tween General Manager Toucey and Lee took in the former's office about two weeks be- fore Lee was discharged. The core- spondent’s name is Fagin, and it is alleged that Mrs, Kuschner lived with him for three months in the belief that he was her husband. The case is on trial before Justice Bartlett. Marx Allenich of 38 Essex street and his wife were the only witnesses examined yesterday. They were sworn according to orthodox Hebrew cus- tom, on the Tephillin. Mr. Allenich testified that Esther believed that Fagin was her hus- band, whom she had not seen for four years, At first she did not credit Fagin when he rep- resented himself as her husband. but when he told her of certain incidents in their lives which she believed were known only to Mr. Kuschner she believed his story and accepte him as her husband. Justice Bartlett thought it impossible that the woman didn't know her husband after four years’ separation, No ad- ditional testimony of importance was taken, but counsel for the wife broudly hinted that there was a conspiracy against her and that Fagin had been induced to pretend that he was Mr. Kuschner and furnished with informa- tion to enable him to carry out the deception. The trial was adjourned for a week. . —— The Judge lIuterests Himself. From the Chicago Tribune. Judge Wm. W. Heaton, who was on the bench in the judical circuit of which Lee county, ill., is a part, was thorough lawyer, and so long had he practiced and so well did he love his work that he often became interested in a case before him to such an extent that he actually took s hand in the management on one side or the other. The opposing counsel would get into awrangle and Judgy Heaton, becoming impatient, would say: “Hold on, now; that'll do.” So often did he interfere, with these words that they became proverbial about the town of Dixon and itissaid thatthe school teachers used the expression in the copy books. A case was on trial im his court one day in which, before his elecwon, he had given some advice. The defendant had been sued for chopping on land which was the property of a railroad company. Mr, Heaton been the company’s counsel. One of the witnesses in the case for the defense was a vrother of the judge. He was relating the extenuating cir- cumstances when counsel for the other side ob- jected, “-Confine yourself to what you know of your own knowledge,” said the we Han to the witness, “That's what I've been doing, Bill,” said the witness somewhat peevishly and addressing the judge familiarly. “You know how it was your- self when you used to cut wood there.” “Hold on, now; that'll do!” roared the court in the same old words, but with a sort of anger which he seldom layed anywhere. And the bar roared, while the sheriff split the top of his desk with an old weighs he had for a gavel. Conscience Money. AClergyman in the Chicago Advance.
