THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WEDNESDAY --July 16, 1890. — CHosBY s. 5 THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Cirenlation of any Newspaper in the Werld, and es am Advertising Medium te worth were than all the ether papers published in Wasbiagten. ‘The railroad is not content to throttle South ‘Washington with its no-thoronghfare belt of wurfaco tracks, to retard its residence and business growth. and to kill and mangle its citizens at grade crossings. In order that this section may be absolutely surrendered to its ‘wees, it causes ite mouthpieces to slauder out- rageously the people whom it has injared. The least opprobrious epithets which it distributes upon those who protest against being uglawfully ‘Killed or damaged by it are “cranks,” “ob- structionists,” “strikers,” “real estate speculators” and “biackmailers." The cli- max of this policy of slander was capped im the House Monday, by the railroad’s mouth- piece. Mr. Mudd, who proved himself an eager and very enthusiastic vilitier. He referred to the section of the city in the vicinity of the tracks and between them and the river as “em- braced im the territory usually designated as Murder Bay or Hell's Bottom, a section of the city nearly all of which is an abode of filth and crime and uphealthfulness to such an extent that the city at large would be better off if every foot of it was girded with a railroad track.” It would be hardto crowd more dense ignor- ance and reckicss disregard of truth into an equal number of lines. Murder Bay aud Heil’s Bottom are both in the northwest section of the city, If these names should ever be given ‘to the land about the tracks it will be because the railroad, Congress consenting, there mur- dors people at its grade crossings, and makes a bell of tho life of residents. The mur- ders of South Washington are committed mainly by the road, and the section does not resemble the infernal regions except in the noises and smells of the railroad’s making. The records cited in a communication, published elsewhere, show the falsity of the charges both as to crime and aa to upheslthfulness, The railroad belt oc- cupies and spoils two magnificent avenues, and comparatively high ground, on a level with the general post office department building, much higher than Pennsylvavia avenue. Washing- ton lies in « hollow aud no part of it is high. The reclaimed “slashes” of the fashionable northwest will not reproach Maryland avenue as tow and nialarial. South Washington is not, as Mr. Mudd intimates, an aggregation of dis- utable houses. but a section of reputable homes, If many of them are loss Pretentious then the palaces of railroad nabobs, they are none the less dear to the owners and none the less worthy of protection. A section cursed by a railroad which pays no attention to the law and threatened with ab- sorption by this encroaching corporation is not the site naturally selected for the most costly residences. Dutin the history of Washington the people of this section, largely made up of Persons bern and reared at the capital, have been # respected and influential element in the city’s population, Wholesale slander of the section may well be resented by such families ag the Jobusons, Stevensons, Hennings, Rileys, Churches, Lloyds, Magees, Holmenda, Mudds, Cassells, Thomases, Wimsatts, Davises, Hirds, Hendieys, Harrises, Gordons, Grahams, Croggous, Huttons, Pages, Garretts, McDevitts, Hepburns, Allens, Barkers, Morgans. Brock: Mattinglies, Thompsons, Bells, Martins, Clarks, Goldens, Walkers and a host of others who have been ideutified with South Washington, including some of the best known and most respected business men. No, Mr. Mudd! South Washington does not need for its moral or physical purification to be gridironed with railroad tracks. All public- spirited citizens of the capital sympathize with the people whose lives are illegally threatened and whose property ts illegally damaged by the railroad, and ail will resent this outrageous slander. Mr. Mudd, representing a congres- sional district adjoining this city, has many constituents im Washington. and vilification of the city or any part of it for the benefit of a corporation which tramples upon it will be re- membered by them, ————————— ‘The 83 industries which figure in the Massa- chusetts Bureau of Statistics Report for 1490 are carried on by 24.294 partners, of which 26,521 are mules and 1,760 are females, 13 being estates. The percentage of female partnership is 6.22 Inround numbers one out of sixteen partners engaged in Bay State manufacturing and macchanical indastries is a woman, Her partnership is limited to 46 industries. The two industries in which woman partnership oxeeeds 40 per cent are clothing and hair work. Ot the whole number of stockhoiders in the 43 industries of the state 30,733 are male and 11,572 female, 426 corporations, trustees, ete, ‘Thus it is seen that while women are not numerous as partners they are as stockholders, Perbaps the domestic partnership suttices in mostcasea, In 69 of the 33 industries the male stockholders predominate. In polishing and dresses—as might be expected—the woman stockholder is in the ascendency, — Why isn’t the vacant throne of Bulgaria of- fered to Chauncey M. Depew?
