The trial of Detective Block, which was to have taken place at police headquarters this ‘morning before the trial board, was postponed Until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. The offi- cer was ready, but his couusel, Mr. H.E. Davis, had another engagement and could mot be Present, Mr. William P. Wood, who preferred the charges, was on hand early and so were some of the witnesses. Those who appeared to be sworn were James Springman, «a deputy mar- shal, and ex-Lient. Arnold The mames of ex-Superintendent of rolice Walker and Jus- tice Mulls were mentioned as witnesses, but they did not appear so early, Ex-Lieat Arnold, while waiting, as he to be sworn, made the remark that it depended upon who swore him whether he would testify or not. Chief Clerk Syivester, whose duty it is to administer oaths on such Occasions, said he (Sylvester) would tell the truth, no matter who swore him. The ex- lieutenant said that he would be satisfied if the oath was administered by Col. Moore. Mr. Wood said it made no dittor nee who swore him; that he was going to make what showing he could with his witnesses and he was willing to take the oath from anybody who had Power to administer it, from the cook to the chief. Ferdinand Lowenstein’s name was me: tioned and Mr. Wood said he was not respon ble for Lowenstein, as he was Col client, —_—_. AN ARRAY OF BOTTLES, Original Packages Shown as Testimony in a Police Court Case. There was an interesting scene in the Police Court today when the case of George Johnsom was called. George is one of the old colored “uncles” who lives in Freeman's alley, and Policemen Dailey and Ferguson charged bum with keeping an unlicensed bar, On Prosecuting Attorney Dumont's desk wert several bottles and a wine glass. One bottle was labeled mineral water. Portions of blank subpenas were on the other bottles and one read: ~The President of the United States to—" and the other bore the name of “Howard Clagett, clerk.” Mr. Dumont claimed that they were “orige inal packages,” but the empty space in the bot tle looked as though some one had taken at least four fingers therefrom, Whisky, fresh beer and stale beer were the contents of the bottles. Maria Douglass told the court that she drank blackberry aud gin, beer and whisky and paid 80 cents for all. She ber husband drauk. “Uncle” Jerry Taylor came forward and ad- mitted that he was the owner of one of the bottles and denied that the defendant had ever sold anything to drink so far as he had known, “Have you been drinking this morning?” asked the judge. ‘No, sir,” responded the witness, ‘No. your honor,” responded Gen. Oarring> ton, “he's sober as a judy, Another colored man named isley, who lives in the house, said that he liked the’ taste of whisky, but “deed” he didu’t know that George ever sold it, Maria Douglass was recailed and examined and the court dismissed the case. ~_ Promised to Go Away. Wm. Gorings, ® young man claiming to be from Goldsboro’, N. the Police Court and begging on the streets. The court recognized him as hav- ing been sent down to the work house last week and asked how he got out. Goring «aid he bad written to a Senator and on Saturday received au answer that the Senator had written to Com- sssioner Douglass, and he was released Satur- day evening. Officer Eaton testified that he found him at the drug store, 9th street and Pennsylvania avenue, asking for money. The court asked if he hmd any place to go to and he ee to go to Alexandria. The court asked how long will it be betore he returned. “Not for fifty years, judze.” replied the prisoner. ihe court said if the officer chose to see him off he would let him go, and the oilicer agreed to escort him tc the train. —— Transfers of Real Estate, Deeds in fee bave been filed as follows: W.
