Their Desperate Struggle With an/| The Senate Passes the Silver Bill—Other Alleged Noted Crook. THEY FINALLY SUOCKED IN TURNING OVER THE PRISONER, JACK FARRELL, TO THE POLICE— HOW FARRELL IS SAID TO HAVE ROBBED A STREET CAR CONDUCTOR ON TEE AVENUE. ‘There was anexciting scene on Pennsyl- vania avenue between 10 and 11 o'clock last night. when two young men—Wm. B. Dawson aud Wm. E. Beagle—succeeded, after a des- perate struggle, in safely arresting John, alias “Jack,” Farrell, an alleged noted burglar and “flim-flam” worker who has done time in the Maryland penitentiary, the police say, for his crooked operations. Farrell was on an ave- nue car going east. When the car was in front of the Center Market a coin was dropped on the floor, evidently to attract the attention of the conductor and give Farrell an opportunity |to pick his pocket. The conductor, John Tiverny, naturally stopped to pick up the coin and the “flim-flam” man kindly assisted him in the search, THE STREET CAR CONDUCTOR ROBBED. When the conductor stooped over Farrell did likewise and his hand was in the side pocket of the conductor’s coat. That was the pocket that he kept the railroad company’s money in and Farrell drew out his hand filied with silver coin and put it into his own pocket. Tiverny discovered what Farrell had done and grabbing the latter by the arm he said, “I want you.” “What do you want with me?” asked Farrell, “I'm a gentleman,” “I can’t help that,” was the conductor's answer, “you have robbed me.” Farrell broke away from the conductor and ran toward the market building. As he did so the conductor called “catch thief.” The two yonng men—Messrs. Dawson and Beagle—were in the National Guard armory over the market and they ran out wo see what the trouble was, AN EXCITING STRUGGLE, Beagle, who is a powerful young man, brought Farrell to a halt op the bridge leading from the sidewalk to the market, Seeing that | Beagle was a large man and not wanting to be | captured Farrell swung over the bridge and | dropped to the park below, a distance of about twenty feet, and Beagle went with him, There the fight started, bat Beagle could aot secure | his man and the latter ran through the park, scaled the fence and jumped on a 9th-street car. There another man, jevidently Farrell's “pal,” appeared on tie scene and got in between the criminal and his pursuers, Beagle entered the car soon after Farrell got seated and pulled him out of the door, Then the tight was renewed, Daw- son was also there, and they started to get the prisoner toward Pennsylvania avenue, Farreil directed his pugilistic qualities toward Daw- son, as Beagle was the stronger of the two, and he thought thet he couid then manage Beagle alone or he could at least get away from him, Beagle, however, held fast to his prisoner and s0 did Dawson, although be was being badly punished by Farrell, MIKE KAVANAUGH GETS A DOSF. Thus the struggle continued along Pennsyl- vania avenue until Mike Kavanaugh appeared | and pretended that he was an officer and said he would take charge of the prisoner. He kept getting closer and closer to the prisoner and | the young man suspected that he wanted Far- reil to pass him the ‘boodle.” Kavanaugh’s interierence came near bemg the means of Farrell's escaping, but one of the young men landed his foot against Mike's siomach and winded Lim, he latter, however, soon recov- ered from the effects of the kick and again took ahand in the affair, only to receiye another dose of the same medicine. PLUCK AND PERSISTENCE CROWNED WITH SUCCESS. When the corner of 10th street was reached Special Oticcr Tom Young appeared and Far- | Fell soon threw him over a pile of bricks, Through all the struggie the young men held fast to their prisoner, und Officer Weedon re- lieved them of their burden at the corner of llth street. When in iront of the Globe Thea- ter Farrel! renewed his assault on Dawaon, but | the officer’s club brought torth a sigh and @ promise to behave himself the remainder of the way to the police station. When the stativa was reached it was discov- ered that he had gotten rid of his money, nis pockets being turned inside out, but the oflicer found an important piece of evidence on him, it was one of the conductor's fare slips, whic: instead of dropping with the money, had be come entangled in Lis suspenders. ‘This morn- iug Farreli was taken to the police headquar- ters, Where his measurement was taken and be Ses: then photograpiied ‘for tue rogue’s gal- ery. IN THE POLICE Court. Gen, E. C, Carrington appeared as Farrell's counsel when the case was culled in the Police Court toddy. The charge against him was lar- ceny from the person. Gen. Carrington said that as the government probably had enough gainst the detendant to establish provable cause he would waive an examination und save the time of the court, “Does anybody know tl Miller, “Does he reside here “No, sir;” said the prisoner, more.” n?” asked Judge live in Balti- HELD IN $1,000 Bart. “You ean give $1,000 bail to await the action of the grand jury,” concluded the court, “I think that 1s rather high,” said Gen. Car- rington, but Judge Miller would not reduce the amount, A charge of assault against Farrell was sus- pended. MIKE KAVANAUGE SENT DOWN. Mike Kavanaugh, who was also arrested, was charged with vagraucy and profanity and was given 105 days on the farm, IN THE JAIL AT ANNAPOLIS, A Washington Man Gets Into Trouble About a Woman at Bay Ridge.
