¥ . el 7 NO WINGS, BUT A FLYER The Little Cushing and How She Cuts the Water. TO DEMORALIZE THE ENEMY. How a Torpedo Boat Will Werk—Turn- ing and Twisting Without Difficulty— ‘The Howell Torpedo and Its Mis- sion—Hecking Big Boats, anemone N MONDAY the torpedo boat Cushing will flit down the river and with a part- ing stirring up of the water will bid ‘good-bye to these regions for some time tocome. She has been ordered to sail to New- port, R.L., where she is to receive her final armament of guns and torpedo tubes, and then she will be rendy for a series of experiments that will determine the range of her future ao- tion as . destroyer of the enemy. Ass matter of fact here has been nothing done in this line yet, anv all that is known by her officers as to the proper way to maneuver such a craft has been the result of general study on the subject rather than actual experience, She has really not been given as thorough atest in the way of turning and maneuvering qualities as is desirable, the water in this river being too shallow for any such movements as tests of that sort would require. As soon as she gets into Long Island sound she will be | put through her paces, and some of her former records are liable to be broken. It makes a great differeuce with a vessel of this size as to c THE LIT far as possible and then it ex with tre- mendous force. It is e: that in actual warfare of this sort it wil be found necessary to send two torpodoes at the same ship several seconds or perhaps minutes apt the first one. to destroy the nets, with which ali large men- of-war are now provided, and the second to hit the ship and sink her. ‘THE CUSHING'’S ARMAMENT. There will be two torpedo tubes on the Cush- ing in the bow, both pointed in about the same direction and another amidships, swung ona swivel between the smokestacks. This latter gun will have a great range of fire, almost an | entire circumference, thé only obstruction be- ing the stacks, The torpedo from this gun will | not be quite as reliable as those from the guns in the bow, which are nearer the water, and which will consequently give a more accurate line of fire. As in the case of the Vesuvius the bow guns will be immovable except as the | vessel 1s turned, and so the entire boat has to | become a gun carriage, so as to give the | weapons their ranges, The amidships gun be- | ing independent of the direction of the boat's course ean be fired at will without altering the | direction in which she is running. This makes it possible for an expert commander to fire at | two vessels at the same time and thus to do ' double damage. | The actompanying cut was taken from a pho- tograph of tue torpedo boat Stilletto, which recently bought by the government from the Herreschoffs. It represents a torpedo at the moment of discharge from the swivel gun, | with which that vessel is equipped. In this | case the torpedo was seven fect from the water | when fired, went a distance of 36 yards before | striking, and then traveled atthe rate of $4 | knots an hour, THE DISTURBANCE SHE MAKES. The most interesting part of the Cushing, | barring the wonderful engines that drive her through the water at such a marvelous rate, is | the disturbance which she makes at her stern | with her two propellers whirling at their | rapid speed. When she is going ahead at full ING AT REST. the character of the water that she runs in, and this will be an important factor to observe, for the flotation of river water, such as that of the Potomac, being fresh, is considerably less than that of the sea, and since the latter is to be the scene of most of her business movements in time of need it is very essential that all should be observed that can possibly be. A FAVORABLE OPINIO:t. The opinion of all who haye seen her while here has been to the highest degree favorable to the- style of warship that she represents, and it will be altogether in the line of the prob- able that some of the appropriation bills in the neor future will contain provisions for others the seme type. In fact, this was the idea ch the Secretary had in mind when he or- ere and the results show his wis- Bat there is a great deal of misunder- standing about the vessel still, notwithstanding that she has been visited by thousands while here. She is not designed to do any fighting. o whi She isto have no guns of any the few small ones with which to be provided being of the rapid-fire pe. calculated to protect the little ship from wemies of her own class rather than for any fousive operations, AS A DEMORALIZER. It might be truly stated that her real mis- sion ina naval engagement is a demoralzer, and as such an element of victory. It is cal- culated by students of the naval history of the World that the presence of several of these ves- sels around a hostile ficet would be a most de- cisive factor in the demoralization of such a fleet. While they are near there is a constant danger of a ship's being biown to pieces with- ~ out a moment's notice, and with men at watch in the tops and others at the great guns ail the time they would be strained to such a tension that it would soon become unendurable, and allof the efficiency of the crew would be lost. Aretreat under such circumstances would be perfectly excusable, in view of the fact that seamen are but human afterall. ft is designed that most of the work of the torpedo boat shall be done at night, when all the conditions are most favorable for a sur- for in this element lies all the hope of A color has been discovered, after ostly experimenting, that is believed to be in the glare of the electric light, which jorst euemy of the torpedo boat. It is brown of a peculiar tint, and this is adopted for the Cushing and any others to be of her sort that may follow in ease it is decided them for night service alone. It is most at in the event of there being a fleet of vessels built some will be painted the French gray that was the original color of the Cushimg when she came here, for day service alone, and the others the new red for work af- ter dark. In such @ division the majority would probably be set apart for the latter serv- as it is most likely that there would be ity for the working of such boats than the others. The torpedo boat must seek he favorable opportunity and grasp it ¥. before the enemy has time to dis- cover her and pour into her the fatal firs from her rapid-tiring guns that would be sure to fol- low one being sighted. THE TORPEDO, The question of what sort of a torpedo shall be used by the Cushing has not been finally de- d, but it is most likely that the Howell tor- pedo will be placed in the boat for the present and. if it gives satisfaction, im all others that are designed to carry such an armament, This torpedo is antomobile, that is, it runs through water without assistance from the shore or ter being launched. It is about twelve fee®in length, a foot or fourteen inches in diameter and costs $2,200 each. The pro- pelling mechanism is in the form of wheel inside the body of the torpedo, which is spun Up to anenormously high rate of speed before being placed in the tube, when it is shot out by means of a powder discharge. Upon im- pact with the water it sinks on an angle to a depth of about nine feet, when it becomes level and then darts ahead at a good rate of » that is kept up for some minutes’ When it strikes au obstruction, such as a torpedo net, it remains intact without firing for afew seconds #0 as to give it a chance to penetrate the net as speed she throws the water up ina perfect mound behind her until it reachesa height at least three feet above her deck. and it would | seem as if it were going to tumble down and | flood everything. It comes up boiling and | thrashing from the twin scrows and pours out | im an angry wave on either side as if ina hurry to escape from such treatment. The screws take the water as it ix rushing past from the bow and throws it still further back, so that what is known as a “hole” is mado in the water. that is,a depression that is filled by the whirling in of water from the sides, After the water bas heaped up. as spoken of, it curves gracefully over in a sheetof froth and disap- pears from sight, being lost in the seething | wake that is being left behind and rapidly | diverging pair of Imes of fonm that are marked | on their edges by a roll of water that is the terror of small boats and pleasure craft. This | wave has caused all of the largest ver the river to tumble and toss as if they we chips, while their wakes had not the slightest | appreciable effect upon the swift litfle vessel, which cut through without a tremble, GOING ASTERN, Should the boat be run at fall speod astern, in which caso she can make nearly as good time as the other way, the effect at the stern 1s totally different, the water being thrown up in two streams Uy the screwa. ite rises to & considerable height, aud then, being blown * back by the wind that the vessel creates, falls upon the deck of the stern in a perfect shower. henever this is done all of the after hatch- ways have to be tightly closed to prevent the water from entering the officers’ cabin, which is situated in the stern of the boat, as is the case in all ships, There is not as much wake left by the bow when the vessel is running astern, since the lines are sharper there than behind. It is the flare that is made to accom- modate the sorews that causes the two streams to rise. WHIRLING IN A CIRCLE. One of the prettiest movements of the vessel is her turning trick, when she makes a com- plete revolution in less than a minute, while going at full speed. Her helm is thrown hard over by means of her steam steering appara- tus in a small fraction of a minute and the lit- tle craft “‘heels” to the center of the circle that is to be made and all of those on deck make a grab for the side lines, The boiling wake astern is at once transformed into a graceful curve to the right or left, as the case may be, and as she whirls she leaves behind her two parallel lines showing her turns, She is usu- ally pat through a figure eight in such maneu- vers, the lines remaming on the water until after she has completed the turn. The photographs from which these illustra- tions were made were taken by a Stan reporter on board the Cushing while on one of her ex- hibition runs down the river. The party was composed of newspaper men whom Mr. Ray- mond, private secretary to Secretary Tracy, had invited to go in order to give thei an op- portunity of seeing the first torpedo boat ever built in this country. The boat was run down as faras Marshall Hall and then, after being ut throagh a series of maneuvers, was headed lor home. She exceeded everything on the river in the way of speed, going it the steamers as if they were anchored. navy yard tug Triton, which Ras aspeed of about ten knots, was on her way down with a pleasure party from the yard on board, and this vessel was tormented to the verge of a condition of mechanical insanity by the actions of the little craft, She ran entirely around her two or three times and then, following her, ran up from behind so close that those on the decks of the Triton thought that a collision was inev- itable, but the Cushing sheered off in time and left a couple of feet of clear water. This is one of the strong points of the vessel, that she is instantly respondent to her helm, making the sharpest turns imaginable. She leaps and bounds like a race horse at the — from half to full speed, those on deck feeling the | difference in an instant without hearing the peed signal bell. At one place just below Fort | Washington the vessel was put across a mile | between two buoys in two minutes and five sec- onds, this representing a speed of about thirty miles an hot The fwo Evils.
