Behind a clump of tall plants in the second drawing room s band of musicians were stationed, and from the dining room door pass- fag through the second drawing room and crossing the first tothe Marguerite fringed arch two broad white satin ribbons were passed, marking a brond path that was wholly unoc- eupied until as the sunset hour ap- Prosched the hidden band sent out the merry strains of the Swedish wedding ‘march, and the candidates for matrimonial honors appeared in view of all present, walking arm in arm and apparently as undisturbed as if they were traversing some well-kept walk in a much-secluded garden. bride's eyes were cast upon the floor and the groom directed her footsteps steadily to- werd the gates of Marguerites. The bride wore ® trained dress of rich white corded silk, made with plain court train, the sides of the skirt were laid in heavy plaits and the front was draped with duchesse lace, The Dodice was high, the high _ collar being fastened with the diamond pin that Was the zitt of Mra. THE SILVER SITUATION. An Error in Tactics Charged Against the Senate Finance Committee. The passage of a free coinage silver bill by the Senate practically insures its adoption by the House and places the administration in ap embarrassing position. If the bill comes to him for his approval the President is sure to make powerful enemies whatever he does. A veto is expected of him, but there is « faction to be offended whatever alternative he selects. From the administration point of views grave error in tactics was made by the The committee took the attitude of favoring the conservative policy of the administration and in their amend- ments to the House bill carried out that idea, But they placed their friends, it is claimed, in the power of the silver men when they re- ported the Honse bill and made that the basis of their action by amending it. The Senate was already considering a silver bill when the House billcame into the hands of the finance committee. Had the House bill not amended its own bill so as to provide for free coinage, the matter would have gone to the House as an original Senate proposition and would have been referred to » committee which m it in the py pair But the House bill with amendments, thus trans- ferring the consideration from the Senate bill to that of the House, the bill goes back to the House as.a House bill with Senate amendments, and as such the question comes up at once i concurrence in tie Senate amendments, ‘hus the bill has a clear right of way and cannot be defeated or delayed except by a direct vote. been reported and had the Senate ight have held it indefinitely or killed p ak closet of the committee room. the as finance committee reported No parliamentary shufile can offset it, The opponents of free coinage have spent many hours trying to devise some means by which a vote may be delayed by points of order. Miss Townscud read a delightful paper upon the “Ancient Greek Homes,” as described im the “Iliad.” Prof. Jenks gave a graphic de- scription of some of the wonderful natural course warrantable in purliamentary practice by which the way for free coinage can be ob- structed before it gets tothe White House. The finance committee is criticised by some for allowing the matter to get into this shape, others are inclined to think that it knew just what it was doing and what the probable re- suits would be alf t the while, ———_+—__—_ Fine Coasting Vessels, The four-masted schooner Lydia Deering, bringing 2,186 tons Penobscot river ice for the American Ice Company, bas just arrived and is rope and America, Mrs. W. Fora few months the school boy with his shining face will cease meandering like a snail schoolwards, Likewise the school girl will have sureease from sorrow and from toil, Books are laid aside for a few days ,though the students, with the words of their teachers fresh in their ears, firmly intend to open them next week and do a jittle regular study and reading each day. But they probably will not do it, in spite of all their good intentions, and next September, if the books are to be found at all, they will be found covered with dust and the covers lightly clasped with airy cobwebs, For the merry, happy, idle season of vacation is here and will stay with us for sevoral months. All the pub- lic schools of the District mee the High and Normal schools have closed and those two have their commencements tomorrow. THE CLOSING EXERCISES, The graded schools of the city all had their closing exercises today. Each school cele- brated the occasion as best pleased the teachers and scholars and varied programs of music, yocal and instrumental, recitations and essays were given in each room. Many of them were particularly good and reflected great credit on teachers and pupils, In all the large buildings bustle and activity held sway all day and there was little of the usual quiet and routine usually to be noticed about a school house. EXHIBITIONS OF WORK, The exhibitions of the handiwork of the scholars that were shown yesterday have added greatly to the interest of the commencement season, These specimens of the children's work were of all sorts, from colored maps to = of doughnuts. There were models in clay, designs for carpets aud wall papers, clever pieces of car- penters’ work, samples of bread and cake from the cooking classes, and, in short, examples of agi the good results of skillful manual training. An interesting exhibition of such work was given at the High School yesterday afternoon and the building was cavied for several hours with an admiring audience, THE NORMAL SCHOOL. This morning at the Franklin building the graduating class from the Normal School was given an oral examination in the principles of teaching im all the branches taught in the ublic schools of this city. Superintendent Bowell conducted the examination, which was decidedly satisfactory in every way. All of # young students acquitted themselves moi creditably and proved that each and every one of them was capable of wielding the chalk and ruler over any number of knowledge seekers wherever they are called upon to fill a teacher's chair, Tomorrow morning the commencement ex- ercises of the Normal School will be held in the Frauklin building and in the evening the graduntes of the High School will receive their diplomas at Lincoln Hall, SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED, The annual announcement of the scholar- ships in the awardof the High School was made this morning.
