New Officers Eiected--The Club’s Ath- letic Grounds. The June meeting of the Capital Bicycle Club was held Saturday uight, with about forty mem- bers in attendance. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Dr. Gabriel FP. Johuson; vico president. Harry N. Low; secretary, Frank H. Stevens; treasurer, J. E. Leaming; captain, £. A. Demaray; mem- bers of executive committee, J. McK. Borden, Dr. Hf. C. Schooley, L. V. Williamson and E. B, Olds, Capt. Demaray read an entertaining and amusing report. giving the record of the club's recent runs. The report of the treasurer showed that the finaucia! affairs of the club were in a moat satisfactory condition, The ex- eursion committee announced that arrange- | ments had been perfected for the annual ex- | enrsion of the club on the Macalester to Mar- | shall Hall on the 24 of July. A communication was read trom Mr. W, C. Dodge presenting | the club with a handsome refrigerator, which was accepted with thanks, | Mr. Douglas Dyrenforth, on behalf of the | Potomac Athletic Club, announced that the | board of governors of the latter organization | had concluded to invite several of the clubs of the city to amalgamate with the Potomacs in the use of gheir new athletic grounds on the | Virginia shore between the Long and Aqueduct Bridges. Mr. Dyrenforth introduced a resolu- tiou referring this itation to a special com- mittee for consideration, but after discussion the matter was sent to the exieting committee on athietic grounds, which has just succeeded in securing for the Capiis] Club a tract of sever] acres on the Virginia heights above ch Aqueduet Bridge, As the cently made this inove of athietie sports it is not proi jc that the offer of the Potomacs will be accepted, although the most friendly feeling exists between the two clubs. The members of the Capital Club have all been made honorary members of the Aualostan Bout Club and given the privileges of the latter's new club house for the summer. This is ia recognition of the courtesy shown by the Capital Club in opening its house to the Analostans for nearly a year while the latter were rebuilding. > has but re- ee Can You Write English? With a view to encourage the writing of short, bright, snappy advertising Tue E ixo Svan Newsrsrcen Company offers three prizes of $100, $50 and $25 each, to be awarded to the writers of the best three series of articles setting forth the advantages of Tue Evexixe Sraz as an advertising medium, written under the following conditions: The series is to consist of six articles, de- signed for separate publication, of not over one hundred and tifty words each, and any less number of words may be used. The articles are to be based on the sugges- tions given below. Each article may contain one or more of the suggestions, as the contest- ant may elect, provided all the points are com- prehended in the six articles comprising the series, No reflections are to be made on any of our cotemporaries beyond that implied in the fact of their enjoying only a fraction of ‘Tux Stan's circulation. The contestants must reside in Washington or in one of the suburbs of Washington. No articles will be received later thon June 20, 1890. Contestants will inelose with their essays an envelope containing name and address, ‘The contestants, however, will be known to the judges by number only, The awards will be made by a committee cumposed of Messrs, Isadore Saks, 8, W. Wood- ward, Washington Danenuower and A. Lisner, Address all inquiries and communications relating to this contest to Editor Advertising Contest. ‘The points required to be covered are: 1. The average circulation of Tux Sra for the first three months of 1890 wus 33,236, this being more than trebic that of any other Wash- ington newspaper. 2. Tue Stax has a larger and fuller circula- tion in the city where priuted, in proportion to reading and purchasing population, than any other newspaper in the world. It is essentially ahome paper, the extent to which it is relied upou by mombers of the household, particu- larly by the purchasing portion of the commu- nity, being the marked characteristic of the paper, to which no other daily journal now published ean furnish a parallel. 3. Tue value of advertising is in direct pro- portion to the circulation of the paper, con- sidering the character of its readers, Weighed in this balance Tae Sran is one of the cheap- est advertising mediums in the United States, and far cheaper than uny other Washington paper. 4. That an advertisement running for three months or over with oue change a month costs about 434 cents a line an insertion or less than one-seventh of a cent per line in each thousand papers, 5. Asworn statement of the circulation of ‘Tue Stax for the preceding week is published each Monday, und its press and circulation rooms are open to the public and its circula- tion books be inspected by any one having an interest in their examination. 6. The fact that Tue Srau is universally ree- ognized as the great “Want” medium of the city and the advantages of making wants kuown through it. gg oe Quick Traixs to Lenay.—The B. and 0. How Cool Correspondents Look Down on Sweltering Members. Itis not often that there is a quorum in the House and Senate during these hot deys. The press gallery is about the only part of the building that is usually cool, and the average member cannot afford to spend much time there if he has any secrets he does not want to disclose. Springer, Crain, Charley O'Neill, Tarsney and perhaps half a dozen others visit the gallery occasionally and are al- ways weil received, but the average member of the House would as soon think of eutering lion's cage as to spend hatf an hour umong the newspaper men where they are all assembled together. It is not an un- compion thing for @ member to send bis card into some correspondent in the ery for him to come out just as the corres- nts send in on the floor of the House for and asa rule the member who watts for an answer to his card is more patient in bis waiting than the correspondent is under similar circumstances, THE COOL CORRESPONDENTS, While » cool south wind blows through the hair on the back of his neck the industrious correspondent leans over his dosk and watches the statesmen swelter. It is a hot place on the floor of the House, though they put the air on ice before pumping it into the hall, Yhe House is a much. less dignitied and | impressive body when the thermometer is | trisking up into the ninotics, A statesman | always looks better in his winter attitude and winter attire, Onacool day he sits in a more upright position and looks Drisker: his step is alert and he is demonstrative and vigorous in his speech and gestures. During the past week one in the galleries has looked down upon a lot of vacant seats and a few weary and washed- out looking men with wilted collars lolling about ina loose-jointed fashion, some sitting on the small of their backs with their feet in neighbor's chair or resting on a convenient desk; some tilted back in chairs in the cloak room near the water- cooler and between the doors and windows, and others making a vain effort to sit upright and look dignified with perspiration running | from their jntellectual brows and collars col- lapsing slowly. A large proportion of the members have taken to wearing coats of the yarious thin light-colored material usually worn for office coats, a number have taken to full white flanne) suits and dannel shirts and more than half of them wear white lawn ties, The gay-colored silk sash has not yet got into Congress, but it is bound to get there. since half the correspondents, who set the styles in summer wear for the Con- gressmen. have adopted that ornamental and comfortable article of dress, PUTTING THE ATR ON TOE. Inorder to make the air of the House as pleasing as possible a quantity of ice is placed inaframe work inachamber through which the nir passes on the way from the fans to the House, Besides this Mr. Reed has had the swinging doors between the House and the Speaker's lobby taken off their hinges, so as te leave an open way from the hall to the windows on the south side of the building, and the sashes have been taken out of the windows looking from the cloak reoms into the corridors, and wire screens have been put in their places, But with all this the hall of the Honse is a hot place, and there is no hotter place in Washington, not directly in the sun, than the Senate chamber. LOOKING OVER THE WEATHER 3tAP, In the lobbies of the House and Seuate, just back of the desk of the officers of the body, are hung weather bureau maps, which show the temperature, wind, rain and general condition of the weather in all purts of the coun- try. On a very hot day half a dozen or more statesmen may often be seen standing in front of these maps looking to see what the temperature is at their homes. while they mop their brows with a handkerchief in one hand and languidly wave a fan with the other. Each morning a man from the signal office comes to hang upon the maps the disks and arrows which indicate the weather and the — way _— of _—tthe wind at the latest observations, This man has toanswer questions from more than half of Congress as to what the weather is going to be for the rest of the day, and he is called to ac- count the next day if his predictions don’t turn out right. Some of the states- men can read the ¥igns on the maps very well for themselves, and they are apt to find that there is no pressing demand for their presence at the Capitol for the rest of the day if they see in time to take a river boat that the indications are for a hot day. TANTALIZED BY TEMPTING CIRCULARS. It gives & man a well-defined case of bome- sickness to observe that it is, as the map shows, about ten degrees cooler at the place where he lives than it is in Washington, and at once there is aman who is ready to predict an early adjournment, Another thing that adds to the misery of the statesmen at Washington in hot weather is the temptation and tantalization of having agents for railroads and summer re- sorts talk to them ona very hot day about the cool breezes that always Vow somewhere else ortoread the circulars that are poured in upon them at this time about temperature at fifty and a cigar and an easy chair or hammock in the shade. Every mail brings them in numberless cards and pamphlets descriptive of summer resorts. Aud with this temptation before them they have the dread of a session which will last un- til September, In desperation they start off in every day or two for «few hours h or Old Point. TGOM ERY COUNTY, Farmers Along the Canal Favor the Building of a Railroad. Correspondence of Tux Evening Sram, Rocxviiie, June 15. Ever since the appoiutment of receivers by the conrts presided over by Judges Cox of the District aud Alvey of Washington county, this state, to examine into the affairs of the Chesa- peake and Ohio canal the people in this county who have heretofore had only the means of the canal for the transportation of their crops to market have been in a feverish state of uncer- tainty. It was well known that Mr, Johnson of Alleguny, one of the receivers, was in favor of the restoration of the waterway, aud the do- cision of Messrs. Baker and Bridges, both of whom have interests in the upper counties of at Lurey at 743 p.m. daily except Sunday, Kound-trip tickets, including admission to the caverns, onsale at all B, and O. offi . — Eooxomy it genteel housckeeping is greatest when articles may be as deliciously prepared with water as with milk. At the Brompton Oratory in London tomor- row morning Miss Anderson will marry Mr, Antonio Navarro of New York. The ceremony will be performed by Cardinal Mauning. When the engagement of Miss Anderson was an- nounced it was stated that the wedding would be one of the most fashionable affairs of the season, aud that tickets of admission to the pro- cathedral were already in demand as long ago s January. It bas beey decided, however, for easons not made public that the wedding will be as private as possible. The only persuns who will attend are Dr, Hi «i his wife. the later the mother of ; Joseph Anderson, her brother, and his wife, who ix the daughter of Lawrence Bar- rett, Alfonse Navacro aud Miss Lytton, daugh- ter of the present British ambassador ai Paris, The two latter will witucss the ceremony. se so. Frightened Out of His Wits. Thomas Colsgrove of Burlington, N.J., with his cousin, Wm. Colsgrove, started from Phila- delphia last Sunday to visit an uncle in the Upper Peninsula, at Sidnaw, Ontonagon county, Mich, They had to wait for train and stopped at a rough boarding house. Here they were routed out of their room and so badly frightened by ruffianly miners that they started back to Philadelphia, ‘The result of the bad seare bas been to un- balance the mind of Thomas Colsgrove. Bat- urday he was violent and had to be taken to Traverse City Insane Asylum, He is thirty years old and rather w althy. — soe Lived Two Years With a Broken Back. For over two years Joseph Cooper, who lives north of Elizabethtown, Pa., has survived the breaking of his back just above the hips. The accident was caused by « tree falling on him. Sis living at all is miraculous. Since the acei- dent he has ha no control over the Jower half of his body and his case is regarded in medical circles as phenomenal, Jt Won't Take Maxy Minutes for the fortu- nate possessor of a facile pen to carn @100 in Tux Sran’s advertising contest, western M and, were looked to with great interest, Now that the decision has been unani- mously made that under no circumstances can the canal be repaired and made to pay expenses the farmers along the canal naturally look to the bes: other means to relieve them from their unfurtunate situation. The lands lying within five miles of the defunct cunal im this county and the same may be said of those of Frederick, Washington and Allegany, are perhaps not surpassed for fertility by any Finds inthe stato, and the only drawback to prosperity lies in the fact that these farmers have at present no means of reaching market except by a loug haul by wagons to the nearest ‘ation on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. Yesterday the correspoudeut of Tur Stan had atalk with two of the largest and most pros- erous farmers living in the section traversed y the defunct eanal, aud their opinion was that unless something was speedily done for the relief of the people living in that locality the consequences would be serious in a finan- cial point of view. Not only the farmers are but agreat number of people who d to the canal for a livelihood here- tofore are thrown out of employment and gaunt poverty 1s staring them in the face, In this state of affairs they are anxiously looking to Judge Alvey of the circnit court for Washing- ton county for a decision authorizing the sale or lease of the canal property for the use of a railroad. Nine-tenths of the people living along line of the canal are in tavot of granting the right to build a railroad to a com- pauy organized for that purpose, Itis proposed at au early day to hold mass meetings in the several counties on the line of the canal and to respectfully ask the court to make an early decision in the matter that will relieve the people interested from further un- certainty, During the past week several sales of lots have been made in Rockville Heights, among them lots 1 and 2, in block 18, to Mra. Mary G. Peter for $1,100; lot 8, in block 2, to John P. Sellman for $500, and lot4,in block 7, to Amelia P. Higgins for @500. SAM. ee Twice His Normal Size. Robert McKelvey, ® newsboy, eleven years old, died in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday, from asnake bite received # week ago. He went swimming in a creek near the city and while in the water was bitten by a snake. The wound cansed him little orno pain for # day or two, but his leg began to swell, fever followed and he was soon raving in delirium. The swelling continued until his entire body was swollen to twice its normal size, The doctors could do nothing to relieve him. He foamed at the mouth and raved like one suffering from hydro- phobia. When he died the leg on which he was bitten had swollen to four times ite Bormal WAS HINGTON, D.
