While in the saloon he fell into a dispute with another man, and when the proprietor attempted to quiet them Winston grabbed the proprietor, and, in the struggle, he received a cut across the head. Sixty-eight years ago Columbian College presented diplomas to its first graduates. The institution was not as large then as it is now, and those who have watched its Iatter growth and were present last night at the commence- ment exercises must have been much gratified. In connection with the college is the Corcoran Scientific School and this celebrated the com- pletion of its third year. The spacious hall was more than comfort- ably filled with an audience that was ptepared to applaud anything which seemed to cal for a display of noisy enthusiasm. Fond fathers and doting mothers, to say nothing of the sis- ters, cousins and aunts of the graduating class, as well as those who were nearer and dearer, occupied every available chair, and would have occupied’ more had there been room for them. On the platform sat the faculty—President Welling the central figure— evidently pleased with the appearance of things. The program commenced with an interest- ing essay on “An International American Con- federation,” by C. A. Davisof Obio. This was succeeded by the annual elocutionary contest. Horace W. Jones talked of **The Shores of the Mediterranean,” ‘‘Paganini™ was Charies L. Frailey’s subject. E, Hilton Jackson discussed learnedly ~The Seventeenth President of the United States,” while H, G. Hodgkins gave a dissertation upon “Woman's Education.” The first prize,a gold medal, went to E. Hilton Jackson, while Horace W. Jones captured the second honor, E. Hilton Jackson was again uppermost when President Welling presented him with the Enosinian medal for proficiency in parlia- mentary law. The other Enosinian medal— for proficiency in debate—was awarded to H. G. Hodgkins. Eva V. Heth was honored with a special prize for her attainments as a Latin scholar. H. G. Ir Wos’t Take Maxy Mrxvres for the fortu- nate possessor of a facile pen to earn €100 in ‘Tak Sran’s advert “Columbus” at the National. The National Theater was well filled last evening by an audience of representative peo- ple, who were curious to see how the story of the ‘Discovery of America” would be told in dramatic form, The character of the play pro- duced many agreeable surprises, for it was of the highest literary order, was full of dramatic situations, was intensely interesting, was bright, racy and charming. It pleased the pit because of its excellence: it pleased the gallery because of its exciting interest, ‘The company was first-class, as was their act- ing also. If enthusiasm in an audience is any indication of merit the performance must rank as one of the best that was ever given in this city. Edmund Shaftesbury is @ man of about thirty-five years, of magnificent presence, with one of the best voices we ever listened to, He believes in living the character of Columbus instead of acting it, and makes his audience think they are present in the scenes of four hundred years ago instead of in the theater in the nineteenth century. A large class of peo- ple whe do not usually attend the theater. and some Who never before witnessed a play, were present last evening, owing to the universal in- terest which attaches to anything connected with Columbus at the presentday. This drama is a grand lesson im history. The costumes were all new and {he makeup of the characters was perfect, It was old Spain in her most glorious period. The people who. were unable to gét inside the theater lost an evening's entertain- ment that combined both pleasure and profit, Columbus, a8 portrayed by Mr. Shaftesbury, was a man of vicissitudes, at times rising to the grandest heights of heroism and courage, and at other times suffering the deepest humili- ation. When he was ought to Spain in chaing the scene was so deeply affecting that there was hardly a dry eye in the audience; and again, in the same seene, when his enemy (Bobadilla) goaded him to desperation and Columbus dashed him to the ground with his chains, the sudden burst of frenzy took the audience by storm and evoked the wildest en- thusiasm. ‘The duel with the bows and arrows between Bobadilia and Pinaon was very exciting.
