INDIAN MODES OF BURIAL, Aboriginal Mortuary Remains Found in Maryland and Virginia. Dr. Elmer R. Reynolds lectured at the Cath- olic University yesterday afternoon on “The Aboriginal Mortuary Remains of Maryland and Virginia.” He began by saying that the methods of burial in the region in question, as wellas in other parts of the country. were quite diversified, but a careful study of the subject leads to the conclusion that inhuma- tion was the general practica all over the con- tinent, and wherever we find a departure from this ruie it was due to special and local circum- stances, such as extreme urgency, extraordi- nary natural facilities for some easier dixpo: tion of the dead, or the total absence of all ordinary meaus of sepulture. In these excep- tional case a body might be inclosed between two canoes high among the branches of a true, laid away in « natural cavern, or placed upon high scaffolds beyound the reach of prowling wolves, He said that burial in caves is probably the oldest form of human burial, and described a burial cave in the Massanutton mountain which he had personal'y explored. Under a travertine floor two or three inches thick, sup- porting in some places stalagmites nearly a foot high, he found « layer about three feet thick of human mixed with animal bones, crania in the most perfect state of preservation and ashes of ancien: fires, He gave an account of the comparatively re- cent burial place on the Piscataway and a joradie cases of single graves. expecially the shell mounds at Newburgh, Koadley pects Bolingbroke creek and Chancellor’ Maryland. He then described the peculiar mode of in- terment known as the cyst grave, which i teresting, not only on account of its rarity in the region under special consideration, but also because of its common occurrence among the prehistoric Indians of Tennessee, as shown by the valuable researches of Prof.F,W. Putnam of Harvard. Only two instances of this mode of burial have been observed in Virginia and one in Maryland. it consists in the excavation of a cavity in the solid rock large enough to con- tain the body, the top of the cavity being cov- ered by a large slab of the rock, upon which is heaped a little mound of earth a foof or two in height. Avery remarkable Indian mausoleum is a vaulted burial mound on the eastern spur of the Massanutton mountain. It isa mound 72 feet long, 14 feet wide and 4 to7 feet high and contains a vault made of large boulders and opening tothe east. It was eyidently the grave of some great chief, possibiy of King Massanutton himself. the father of Shenan- doah, whose radiant beauty earned for her this name, which signifies the Daughter of the Stars, Another form of primary burial is the stone Point, grave or cairn, many of Which ure found in the South y, Va. Dr. Reynolds also described the Trimty mounds, a group of three mounds arranged in a triangular shape near the eastern extremity of the Massanutton Puss, which connects the two valleys of the Shenandoah, and other mounds and mortuaries, ingluding a remark- able tribal ossuary at Sandy Hili, on the enst- ern shore of Maryland. Dr. Reynolds closed with a touching allusion to the pathos of that aceident by which th rehistoric aborigines had been led to shelter their dead under the cross, a symbol of the great spiritual truths of which they, in their child-like innocence, knew nothing. = Can woe Write English? Contestants will inclose with their essays an envelope containing name and address, ‘Ihe contestants, however, will be known to the judges by number only. The awards will be made by a committee composed of Messrs. Isadore Saks, 8S. W. Wood- ward, Washington Danenhower and A. Lisner. Address all inquiries and communications relating to this contest to Editor Advertising Contest. The points required to be covered are: 1. The average circulation of Tue Stan for the first three months of 1890 was 33,236, this being more than trebic that of any other Wash- ington newspaper. 2 Tue Stak hasa larger and fuller circula- tion in the city where printed, in proportion to reading and purchasing population, than any | other newspaper in the world. It is essentially ahome paper, the extent to which it is relied upon by members of the household, particu- larly by the purchasing portion of the commu- nity, being the marked characteristic of the | paper. to which uo other daily journal now published can furnish a parallel, 3. The value of advertising is in direct pro- portion to the circulation of the paper, con- sidering the character of its readers, Weighed in this balance Tur Srar is one of the cheap- est advertising mediums in the United States, and far cheaper than any other Washington paper. 4. That an advertisement running for three months or over with oue change a month costs about 4} cents line an insertion or less than one-seventh of acent per line in each thousand papers. 5. Asworn statement of the circulation of Tue Stan for the preceding week is published each Monday, and its press and circulation rooms are open to the public and its circula- tion books may be inspected by any one having an interest in their examination. 6 The fact that Tue Sran is universally rec- ognized as the great “Want” medium of the city and the advantages of making wants known through it L EBIG Cc OMPANY'S EXTRACT OF BEEP For Improved and Economic Cookery; use it for SOUPS, SAUCES snd MADE DISHES. A most remarkable phenomenon is reported from the outlying country districts around Lockport, N.Y., regarding the electrical dis- play during the recent severe storm. A furmer nemed Jasper Bown, residing forty-five miles northwest of this city, and his family were singularly affected. The house seemed to be enveloped ina biuish, hazy light; the air was impregnated with the electric fluid; balls of fire danced along the tops of chairs and slid over mantels, or chased each other up and down a hanging lamp shade, It was a terrible sight to the simple er folk. There was no light in the house and the ‘error was increased bya total paralysig of their muscies. They were unable to move and set like mummies, fearing their end was near. ‘The storm lasted four hours and as it dey d the electricity vanished and the use of their limbs and arms returned. Hos, Wu.
