Cammack & Decker of this city, Proprietors of the Shenandoah Lime Works at Strasburgh Junction, Va., were informed this morning by Mr. George E. Decker, manager of | the works, of the discovery of a large cave in the lime stone quarry in which they were work- ing. Mr. Decker arrived in this city this morn- ing and to the members of the firm related the Particulars of the discovery. The first open- ing into the cave was made on Monday, but considerable work was necessary before the real character of the find could be determined. Yesterday, however, tho last of the smal! open- ings was passed and the exploring party found themselves in a __ series of large chambers stretching out for several hundred feet and at leasta hundred yuris beneatn the surface of the earth. Sta- lactitex and stalagmites abound in the most beautiful variety, the stalagm) formations being especially wonderful. In one of the chambers a long, sloping ledge of rock leads to an impassable ravine, down which a lighted ball of lampwick saturated with alcohol was seen to fall for some seconds, being finally lost to view without seeming to have reached the bottom of the abyws. ‘The large chambers dis- covered seem to he connected by a number of long corridors thickly filled with hanging and upgrowing formations. In places the vaulted roof of the largest chamber was so far over- head as to be invisible in the light afforded by the candles, A press dispatch this morning announced that the cave was found on the land of Mr. Borum of Strasburgh. This, a Star re- porter was informed, is incorrect, as the quarry in which the find is locatd@l was sold to Messrs. Cammack & Decker a year ago and they have since located a large lime manuf. tory there. Mr, Geo. W. Decker of the firm and Mr. Geo. E. Decker, the manager of the works, leave here tonight for the purpose of conducting further explorations and to take the necessary steps to develop the cave. ——— The Veterans of Company A, The Veteran Association of Company A, Washington Light Infantry, met last night at Grand Army Hall and elected James W. Forty or fift: em- bers were present last night at the Arlington for the final meeting of the summer. The special object of the meeting was the dis- cussion of the question of incorporation. Mr. J. H. C. Welling, Justice A. B. Hagner, Alex. D, An- derson, W. V. Rh. Berry, Henry Wise Garnett, Reginald Fendall and Joha H. Voorhees, A proposition to increase the size of the com- mittee was lost by a decisive vote and on mo- tion of Mr. Anderson the club adjourned to meet again on the second Monday in next October. The prospects of the new organiza- tion are now most encouraging. One or two minor difficulties that x J mm the way at the outset have been happily overcome and it would seem as though the University Club had taken along step ad on a prosperous and successful carcer.
