WHAT IS YOUR NAME? The Man Who Asks Questions Will be Around Monday. THE DISTRICT. ees ructions to to be Answered, aS Saar Dingman’s § tors Questi: ONDAY bright and early the census enumerators will begin their rounds in this District. There are 136 of these gentlemen and it is expected that Monday and during the days of will nd District. They next week and the following week t visit every house in the city will not present a formidable appearance. The enumerator wears no distinctive uniform and might easily be mistaken for a book ca vasser or a sewing machine agent. Wearing 4 citizen's dress. probably the best suit that each individual heppens to have, and armed with a fountain pen, they will appear at the front doors of the residences of the city and pro- ceed to ask rtain number of qu directed by the law and Superintendent Porter. As the answers are giv noted down on large sheets of paper which each enumerator carries in his port folio. Be- fore the invention of fountain pens the enum- erators were distinguished from ordinary men by having a small bottle of ink fastened to the front of the coat or vest within easy reach of the thirsty pen. Some of the enumerators Will probably make their public appearance next week wearing this badge of their o ‘They will not carry any other weapons exc a pleasant smile and polite manner, with which they have been supplied from the large stock owned by Mr. Harrison Dingman, the 6upervisor of the census. SUPERVISOR Dy Mr. Dingman is the commanding officer of ¢his census army, and his executive ability as displayed in the management of the triennial conclave of the Knights Temp eld in this city and in other important positions has been Of great value in arrenging the details for taking the Distriet He has the faculty Of attending to a multitale of details and at the same time preserving his good humor. He has endeavored to distribate from his surplus stock to the enumerators and has instructed them to be gentlemanly in bearmg and cour- teous in language. He does not Leip the enumerators will meet with any oppo: sition in their work, but if he should be asked what course should be pursned if cross dogs attacked or irate householder threatened per- sonal violence, he would probably recom: areinforcement of the clothes as a sufficient Protection against the teeth of surly canines and the boot toes of irritable citizens, rather than any violent rejoinder in word or deed. Mr. Dingman beheves that a smile is better than a scowl and a kind word than harsh lan- guage, and he has endeavored to impress the Minds of the enumerators with this truth. However, like other men who have an agree- able address, Mr. Dingman knows how to be stern, only he prefers the other method. It is something like the claws concealed beneath the paw of velvet. The enumerators are of the same kind. They are only appar- ently ordinary citizens going from house to house asising questions and noting the answers, They are instructed to be polite and courteous. But suppose that they are received with harsh- ness. even violence. Suppose that they are repulsed and a flat refusal to answer the ques- tions is given. ‘Ihen the claws come out and the unfortunate citizen soon realizes that these unimportant jooking individuals are the rep- Fesentatives of the power of the United states government. ‘The enumerators are required to exercise courtesy aud consideration, but at the same time the government means business and proposes to get the information.
