Judge Miller held an evening session of the Police Court last evening to hear further argu- ments in the cases of the saloon keepers aud liquor dealers who failed to pay their docket fees in the Criminal Court. Asheretofore pub- lisbed the papers in the cases were sent back to the Police Court because of the fariure of the defendants to pay the docket fee,as required by &rule of the court. Now counsel ask leave to have the papers again sent up or for the court to dismiss the charges because their clients Were wrongfully deprived of a trial by jury. ‘The defendants’ side of the cases was argued by Messrs W. A. Cook. D. E. Cahill, J. J. John- fon, and C. Maurice Smith. Mr. Dumont, tor the District, will make his reply at the next Special session of the cour: THE TARIFF MUDDLE. Hitch im the Senate Finance Commit- tee—Kepublicans Fail to Harmonize. The Senate finance committee isin a pretty bad mix-up over the tariff. The decision to consider the bill in the whole committee is in the interest of preserving the McKinley bill in | practically the shape it now is, and in this Mr. | Sherman will not have the support of the other | Tepublicans of the committee, Mr. Allison and Mr. Aldrich, particularly, are in favor of a sub- stitute bill which will make material reductions from the schedules of the McKinley bill. They | want the woolen, the metal and crockery sched- ules, particularly, pared down. There is a fight | on, in which the democrats are taking no part, | except to stir it up, It is said by republicans that Mr. Sherman cannot succeed in his design unless the democrats aid him merely for the urpose of getting the majority in trouble. To ‘ollow ont the plan he has laid down, they say, | will keep the committee at work until Decem- | ber.
