THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TRURSDAY.. May 29, 1890. CRossy s. NOYES. Editor, THE EVENING STAR bas the fullest Lecal Circulation of any Newspaper inthe Werld, and as an Advertising Medium Is worth more than all the other papers published in Washington. The Post abandons ail serious attempt to sustain the statemonts which it has made as the advocate of a railroad dictatorship for Washing- ton; but, yielding with bad grace, it endeavors to cover ity retreat under a cloud of upithets, ‘Tae Stax pleads guilty to the charge of fight- ing to protect tho lives and property of the people of Wasbington aguiust illegal encroach- ments by railroads, not only during the last three months as speciticd, but whenever tho occasion has arisen during its whole life. It is retained permanently on the side of this com- munity, and matter in the public interest will appear in its columns not only for duys and monthe, but always, Subsidized for an indefi- Rite period by the people its advocacy is not abject to the time limit of any of the ordinary advertising marks. The /’ost’s ruilroad advocacy evidently does not possess these characteristics of permanence. It might even be inforred from the care which the Post takes to re- frain from repeating and sustaining the state- ments of its origmal editorial, that ouly a single insertion of the railroad matter was in- dicated. —_—_—_—=. There is cne imper:abadle thought in the minds of the people ef the United States—the Tnion of the States. On no occasion does this thought have mors potency cr soar higher thau on the annual recurrencs of the period when loving tepgues and tender hands remake in symbol the buttle and the vietory for the Union and consecrate anew the temple of our liberties. At Gettysburg, at Arlington and a thousand otber places the voice of gratitude, of pride and patrivtivm is raised and the Praises of a whole people are lifted to the heavens, because our Union has been pre- served aad our grand national future assared. a ee oe The man whom the South honors today is one of the most impressive characters the world hasever seen. Ile rose superior to defeat and supreme over disaster and ruin. It does nat Matter in contemplating such a man as Lee what opinion is held of the cause for which he fought. This leader was, in the gencral view, greater than the cause. If be had flourished in au carlier and happier period he might have today the homage of every American as the homage of the South. $<» -=_____ There is a strong feeling prevalent that Speaker Reed is no half way man and that when he says no intoxicants sba!l be sold in the House restaurant, he means what he says. The Speuker is right amd he will have the hearty support of the best element of the country re- gurdless of polities, National legislative prohi- bition, like charity, should begin at home. SRE Sen ———. + ss Many members of the House are already Prepared to support the propesed bill to crect @ rapid transit railroad from the south wing of the Capitol to the Senate restaurant, ee or The Confederate emblems eurtied away trom Richmond today as sacred scuvenirs were ail manufactured in Conneeticu*. Thus do we see sectional prejudices removed. ——— Today the South lauds the virtues of Lee. Tomorrow the Union will laud the virtues of the Union-savers. ———+ +. It is respectfully suggested to Mr. Cleveland that @ sun bath is good for the rheumatism, —— ———- After the quiet life Mr, Vaux has led in Phil- adelpbia he finds the impetuosity of Congress Just a little disturbing.
