SCENES AT THE SPENCERIAN COLLEGE COMMENCE- ‘MENT—MUSIC, FLOWERS AND FINE SPEECHES— YOUNG WOMEN TALK BUSINESS—ADDRESSES TO THE GRADUATES, In the midst of bushels of beautiful flowers and in the presence of a couple of thousand or more of appreciative auditors, with the strains of sweet music scattered through the evening, the twenty-fourth annual commencement of the Spencerian Business College was held last night at Lincoln Music Hall. The audience was of the customary size, every box being filled, every seat taken, all of the aisles occupied. Viewed from the stage the floor and the two galleries presented the appearance of a» struc- ture built of human heads, piled one above anoth It was truly a home-coming for the institution, for this was @ return to the old stamping ground, whore graduation after grad- uation used to occur in years gone by. Everybody felt the influence of this home-coming, and the smiles of gratification that beamed from the faces of the proprietors of the institution spread on all sides until the entire house was in a good humor, despite the damp, sultry stickiness of the atmosphere. The flowers began to pile up in front of*the stage in a perfect bank early in the evening, and kept flowing in to the stage from the over-packed house until after the exercises had begun. The red-badged young men and women, who will graduate next year and who took their appren- tice lessons last night, literally had their hands full bearing these beautiful offer- ings to their proper destinations, and the little miss, whose duty it was to provide the soloists, both mental and musical, with floral decorations, was kept running back aud forth over the stage in pursuit of her complaisant nctims, THE APPEARANCE OF WHITE DRESSES. White dresses made their debut for the sea- son. The stage was almost dazzling in its whiteness and the house was neurly as bright. Fans kept fluttering all the time—in rythm when there gas music and without harmony when the bahd was silent. Prof. Sousa held the audience enturalled with the waves of his baton and evoked tremendous applause with some of his popular music, THE EXERCISES. The exercises began at about 8:15 o'clock, when, to the strains of the Crusader March, the faculty and classes of the college filed upon the stage and occupied the seats that had been arranged in concentric semi-circles, Prof. and Mr. Spencer, who were heartily applauded by the audience when they entered, occupied the sofa in the center, along with Rey, Dr. Sewall, Commissioner Harris and Mr. M. M. Parker. Near them sat Prof. F. R. Lane, principal of the High School; Gen. R. D. Mussey, Hon. M. G. Emery, Hon. H. Clay Evans and Mr. J. Or- mond Wilson. The duates filed in from op- posite sides of the stage, the ladies and the gentlemen in different line: pleting two or three evolutionary movements around the group of chairs filed into their seats. ind after com- Rev. The principals of the school first addressed the classes upon the duties and responsibilities about to descend upon them. entering, they were, upon ca- reers of activity und wage earning. Mrs. Sara A. Spencer first spoke to the lady graduates, She gave the young women whose minds she had been moulding for the past year some wholesome advice not to regard every young man as a possible admirer. but to treat him as somebody's son, who should be left free from snares und pitfalls, to choose his wife at his own discretion. Prof. Spencer told the young men that they would have to be lively in order to keep the girls from treading on their heels in the race. He reminded them that their education had but begun and that every day must add to the total of their knowl- edge. ie urged them to go to bed early, rise early and keep au honest cash account with themselves, OTHER ADDRESSES. Then three gentlemen, whose lives have been marked examples of success from persistent effort, spoke words of cheer and encourage- ment and warning to the young folks, Hon. H. Clay Evans of Tenuessee said that the founda- tion laid by the busiuess college was wortn to the graduates more than a capital of several thousands of dollars to each one. Diplomas from such institutions, he added, are nowa- days recoguized as certificates of high merit. Col. M. M. Parker urged perseverance upon those whose hearts might at first be faint from the rebuffs of the world. He said he thought that Washington had a great future as an edu- cational center and this college was one of its proudest attractions. Rev. Dr. Sewasll adyised the class of '90 to adopt as their motto. Reguum coelum est reg- num usuum, ‘The kingdom of Heaven is the kingdom of use,” and translate it not only into English but into their lives. THE DIPLOMAS AND MEDALS. The diplomas were then awarded to the graduates, a list of whom was published in last evening’s Star, by Hon, Wm. T. Harris, commissioner of education, who told the graduates of the advantages of systematic edu- cation such as they had been receiving in di- | recting the activities of the world. pecsenlines Saracen Sprctat Trays To Ricumonp, Va., Mar 28.— Special trains will leave Washington for Kich- mond, Va., tomorrow, May 28, at 10:57 a.m. and 12 o’clock midnight, respectively.
