\ THE EVENING STAR THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: MONDAY CROSBY 8 NOYES. THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Medium is worth more than all the other papers published in Washington. The impossible has happened. The Senate aad House committees on public buildings and grounds have reconciled their differences of ™many years’ standing and have agreed upon a site for the local post-office. This result has been reached only by concessions, involving certain sacrifices of individual pride of opinion ea beth sides. Washington is profoundly grateful to its legislators on these commit- tves, who have recognized the urgent ne- cessity of supplying this need of the capital and who have been sufficiently public spirited to place considerations of public interest above the impulse to adhere obsti- nately to individual opinion respecting the post-office site. The decision reached by the joint committee is a thoroughly acceptable one. The local office is given a siteof ample dimensions, to be occupied by it alone ina building specially adapted to its purposes. Its residence is to be reasonably permanent, and not of the precarious tenure of occupation with a more powerful co-tenant, who would have the power and disposition to kick it auto the street whenever its room was needed. The location selected is convenient to the public and near to the business center. An appropriate building when erected upon thie square will be a prominent architectural adornment of the great promenade avenue of the world, the historic street connecting the executive and legislative buildings of the Amer- jean republic. Any drawbacks to the site, which might lead some citizens to prefer a dif- ferent location, are trifling in comparison with ‘the immense public benefits of the proposition; zad Washington, which has been driven by suecessive disappointments into the mood to be satisfied with anything so it is a post-office, will weleome with genuine enthusiasm the agreement of the joint committee. It is hoped that the building to be erected upon the chosen site will be of a character, not merely to furnish better sccommodations than the present disgraceful rented quarters, buttoadorn the avenue architecturally and to be creditable both in intertor arrangement and outward ap- pearance to the capital and to the nation, Congress, the capital's constitutional guardian, has been “on the rampage” lately after the fashion of Pip’s guardian in Great Expecta- tions, and has given its ward some heavy buifetings, and threatens others. If the be- lubored ward of the nation can secure at once & new post-office building the gift will be as salve to its aching bones. ——— The prospect for revision of creed in the Presbyterian Church is not the only command- ing prospect just now. The Saratoga assembly has agreed to assist other Presbyterian bodies throughout the world, including the Reformed cburches, which have the same form of govern- mentandin the main the same theology, in the formation of a common short creed to be used in their common labors among the heathen and as a common band of union among the denominations holding to the faith called Cai- vinistic and the polity entitled Presbyterian. ‘The assembly went a step further in the adop- tion of resolutions looking to the acceptance eventually of a working unity with many other churches not Presbyterian in worship, doctrine andgovernment. The correspondence between the Episcopal. Presbyterian, Congregational and other bodies for the purpose of admitting a basis of union of speculative faith, while not likely to resu:t in anything at present that is very siguifi ~nt, is a sign of the times, and in course of afew years it is possible that the great Protestant bodies will form a sort of evangelical alliance more comprehensive and thorough than the existing one, and which will Testore the outer catholicity in many respects of the early Christian church to the Protestant Fortion of the existing church. The fact ‘that the the school book publishing business of the United States is practically in the hands of a trust or syndicate is one that is of large interest tothe public. One by one this combination, which originally included several of the leading firms in the trade, has bought out the other firms and now, it is stated, owns ninety per cent of the publishing business engaged in the publication of common school books. This condition of things will greatly influence the prices of such works in the future. If it shall, as claimed, cheapen them, the people will not care, but if, on the other hand, the prices shall increase or the quality deteriorate, then the purchasers will have occa- sion to complain and will seek a remedy. Se Washington suffers more from reckless driv- ing than from fast driving. Ifa policeman will stand on a corner for a time and watch the drivers who let their horses go as they please while they are looking out at the tail end of their wagons, or are ogling their friends on the sidewalk or ou passin; vehicles, or are fast asleep, as is sometimes the caso, they will duwcover that carelessuess and indifference rather than speed are the cause of the majority of accidents. Mayor Cottrell is still Jegal mayor of Cedar Keys, Florida, and the people are still fearful that when the U.S. revenue cutter leaves the harbor he will come to town from his hiding place andslaughter the entire popu- Jation, $< Stanley's wife (to be) becomes Lady Stanley if he becomes a British subject and under the circumstances the chances are that he cannot resist the pres oa ee Asingle sentence in the Kemmier decision which is likely to be overlooked if not pointed oat is well enough remembered in the light of reckless assertions that hac» been made: “The 14th amendment did not radically change the whole theory of the relations of the state and federal government to each other and of both governments to the » the people.” The impertinent census question is not to be turned down this year, but some other year. Ifyou'll get in among our collection of $15 Suits there's plenty of field there for yout faney to play. Don't you know—without realizing it oftentimes maybe—you find yourself following “Feshion's Cate” It seems funny, but everybody's calling for either the Jight and nobby patterns—or the other extreme—the piain, dark weaves, For adayor two beck we've been telling you con- siderable about the PLAIN BLACK and BLUE CHEVIOTS and SERGES—and some of the best of these are at $15. After we GUARANTEE the color and the materiale—AND WE DO—there isn’t much left for us to call your attention to—unless it inthe At, Wedoubt if that te necessary, for you KNOW THEY ARE ALL RIGHT IN THAT PAB- TICULAR, It's @ subject of universal comment how remark- ably PERFECT are the patternson which OUR Suits are cut. The fsulteyou usually find with ready-made clothing—s pulling here—a bagging there and strained seam somewhere elee— do not exist in OURS. We can St you—Gentle- men—without @ wrinkle, The more trouble you've found—the more pride we take in showing you how successiully we can serve you, You'll find the Cheviots and Serges—-fally or half- lined and akeleton—Sacks and Cutaways. With the lighter patterns you'll waut to take a minute to decide—try on afew to see how you look in them. If you've been wearing dark clothes you may think the designs little striking, but that you'll find to be due to the contrast. It'll wear off. ‘There's a big difference between neat, nobby pat- terns and flashy, loud one, You'll hardly want the latter. They're not genteel and we haven't any. Checks and Piaids—with some stripes and mixtures —are the favorites. Most everybody looks well in them, too—and they are really the best de- signs for many a season. They are tailors’ pat- terns, and there's where we got them. They'd charge you $30 and $136 to order. Other clothiers ‘round here—provided they've got them at all—$20 atleast. We do not think we extolled the merits of this Cutlery too extravagantly, expecially when it is considered ‘that each and every size of these Scissors is sell- ing for 25 cents, wheu, under ordipary circum- stances, they would be cheap ot 50 cents, Judg- ing from appearances they won't last very long, and if yo! don't get obe of two pair it won't be our feult, ‘The notable reductions we have made in Tow- els, and goods of this class, leads us to.also re mind you that you will find abundant values at reduced figures in several of our departments, where “sub-seasou” goods are carried. We men- tion this fact to advise you to practice « little “old-fashioned” shopping with us, because this is the only way in which you can know, or we can show you, how many little peedfuls are go- ing at almost your own price. We Gout intend to carry over any past-seuson stock, and so we are putting quick-selling prices on many cooda, TOWELS IN THE POST. © @ Davia, Market space and Sth st eT aT "s. J
