4 THE EVEN NG STAR, WASHINGTON THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Cireulation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Medium is worth The solid and influential citizens of the Dis- trict who have German blood in their veins velebrated in person or through representatives last night the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Sehuetzen-verein, the organization which has supplied them with the local opportunity of enjoying the wholesome out-door sports and open-air social intercourse of the Fatherland. The text of the speeches of the evening was the German-American from various points of view, and the subject is full of interest. History tells us that the German peoples of old were a stiff-necked race, characterized by an obstinate independence of spirit, impatient of “bosses” ofall descriptions; that the individual would not permit control of his private affairs by the fomily, that the family paid small allegiance to tribe or district, and that the tribes impatiently endured either domestic or foreign domination. Even the strong pressure of the threat of foreign rule, whether Roman or Napoleenic, served only to hold the independent peoples together while the danger lasted, and from the time of Arminius the spirit of individual mde- pendence has contended with the desire of German unity, the only unity offered being that under a monarchical ruler. Today the people who have built up the most powerful empire of Europe have still the independent, enterprising, restless, migratory spirit, and in obedience to its dictates millions have left their homes for the freer air of the new world. The German spirit of individual independence is also the back-bone principle of the American's make-up. It flourishes better ir the western than in the eastern hemisphere. Transplanted it strikes its roots deeper and spreads its branches wider and higher. Moor influences unite to subdue the independent spirit in Europe. Here it can be exercised to its full extent and individual development follows, In the business life of the nation, in that deal- ing with material things in which the national life has hitherto mainly consisted, Americans with German blood in their veins have been prominent; and they will be among the fore- most, here as in Europe, when the nation comes to move more largely in the world of ideas and the American classical age in litera- ture and srt has been reached, The opportunities of the German-American will continue to be greater than those of the German at least until the establishment ofthe German republic and the disarmament of European nations While the German- American may well be proud of his lineage, recalling the achievements of the masters in action and in thought whose names adorn the annals of his people, and may well be proud of the mighty empire which they have estab- lished, he will be still prouder of the great re- public which has fostered his development as an individual, which he has helped to build up and to defend, and of which he constitutes an inseparable and important part. sinus ee The quiet study of science is always the pro- logue of—often an incident in—a physical revo- tution. It was thus that Sir Humphrey Davy aud Charles Darwin, and in an earlier time Galileo and Newton, made their names immor- tal and gave to the world discoveries that blessed and elevated humanity, and now, be- sides Tyndall, and Helmholtz, and Edison, there are scores of less known students of na- ture who are using its forces as benisons on their race through all the ages. One of these obscure workers—no longer to sit in a back seat, if the reports published today of his dis- covery be strictly veracious—lives in Bridge- port, Connecticut. Before a society of engi- neers he claims to have demonstrated by expe- riments that there is in some boilers, under certain circumstances, a property of steam that will cause an instantaneous doubling of pres- sure without the application of heat. This property accounts for so many mysterious boiler explosions by which large numbers of lives are lost and property destroyed. Accord- ing to the statement at hand the experiments were all successful, and the discovery was fully established, ——— The Supreme Court is tired. R me Ft NATURE AND CURE, BY A&P. LIGHTHILL, M.D, Catarrh manifests itaelf by a discharge from the heed, sometimes of a coloriess glairy fluid, but oftener ofa purulent, creenish-yellow m: ter, which im many instances is so copious that Patients feel as though their whole bead is in a stateof corruption. The discharge often lodges behind and above the soft palate, requiring al- most constant hawking for its removal. Often scales or incrustations are blown frou the nos- trils, either solid or of « tubular form, The breath is offensive, and sometimes revoltingly fetid. Smell, and occssionally the taste, is im- paired or destroyed, the hearing becomes af- fected, nuises in the head make their appear- sce, and the eyes are apt to become irritated and watery. The head feels full, heavy, and compressed, eapecially above and between the eyes, and severe neuralgic pain is often Perieuced about the face and head. ‘The peticut coughs more or less, basa capricious appetite, loses flesh and streusth, is depressed in spirite and inclined to drowsiness, Tue memory ie weukeved and often seriously impsired. Cold is taken from the least exposure, and step by step the inflarumation spreads until it reaches the lungs and terminates in Consumption, So frequently has this fatal course been noticed that Catarrh is tow looked upon as one of the earliest manifestations of this dread discase By the system of treatunent which we have Originated and since carried to scientific per- fection, a complete and radical cure of Catarrh can be effected. This we have demonstrated in ‘thousands of cases, represeuting the disease in every form and iu all ite various stages of de- velopment. Our treatment reaches the dis- eased parts in the most direct and positive qMauver, instantaueously penetrating every cell aud cavity of the head with the most bene- Heial results, So effective is this plan of medi- cation that even a single application ts prom ductive of immediate and decided relief, apd by coutinuing this treatment the discharge diminishes, irritation is allayed, the inflamma- tion subsides, ulcerations are made to beal, uutil finally s radical and permanent cure is established, DR.
