He Was Unwilling to Remain ina Sub- ordinate Position. - Prof. Willism T. Hornaday, who has been acting as superintendent of the new zoological park, has handed in his resignation to take effect on June 15 end the resignation has been secepted by Secretary Langley of the Smith- sonian Institution, This action of Prof. Hornaday’s was a great surprise to every one, as he has been superintendent in charge ever since the appropriations were made for estab- lishing the park. He has been in the heartiest sympathy with the new institution ever since it was first discussed, and a large share of the success that has attended it so far has been due to his zeal and untiring en oe to the establishment of the park Horna- day was curator of the department = living animals in the Smithsonian, department that was established at his earnest solicitation. When the pros- | oer of s zoological park became a reality ‘of, rerioasre f at once took charge of tho work connected with it, and being « naturalist a8 well as a scientist he found it very congenial, and threw himself body and soul into it. He has declined a number of business offers more tempting from a business point of view in order that he might devote himself to building up the new park, For more than @ year he has not been connected with the ‘Smithso n- ian Institution, but has been under the zoolog- ical park commission. But the park is now to be organized under the Smithsonian Institu- tion and it seems that it has not been Prof, Langley's intention to make Prof. Hornaday superintendent under the new dispensation. On the contrary Prof. Hornaday recently told that he would expected to work under another superintend- ent, who would have charge of the new park and its future development. Mr. Hornaday would have had a fairly responsible place, but the real airy ks to be placed inthe hands of Mr. rown Goode, the assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, in charge of the National Museum. Mr. Goode was to have retained the charge of both institutions, This arrangement did not please Mr. Hornaday and his resignation was the natural fesult. Mr. Langley’s reason for not continuing him as superintendent is that Mr. Hornaday has not had sufficient ex- ecutive experience to entitle him to the posi- tion. Hornaday b been ‘con- nected the Smithsonian for nine 8 taxidermist and naturalist. "He ‘offered to continue in his position for six months on condition that if he made a single misstep or error of judgment he should step down and out without anythin; more being said.
