Childs, Today the printers of the country are celebrating the birthday of Geo. W. Childs in an interesting manner. Four years ago Mr. Childs and Mr. Drexel presented to the Inter- g | sin, Typographical Union a check for $10,000, to be disposed of as seemed best to {the union, It was decided to make this the | nucleus of a fund to be used in time in found- | ing « home for aged union printers. That | fund already exceeds €25,000. i On Mr. Childs’ balers ( the 12th of May, all | the union printers east of the Mississippi make | # voluntary contribution.to the fund equivalent to the sum they receive for the composition of 1,000 ems of type. Or, as they say, they “set up 1,000 ems for the Childs’ fund.” The price’ per thousand varies in different cities, but it averages up pretty well, and every 12th of May the fund receives a big addition. | On Mr. ‘Drexel’s birthday, which comes |im September, all the union printers |west of the Mississippi go and do likewise and the fund takes another upward | step. In Washington there are about 1,200 | printers, and it is thought that today the fund | will receive at least £500 from thie city alone. Already the International Union owns tract of about 80 acres of land near Colorado Spriugs, Colo., which was do- nated as a site for the home, and here it is expected the home will be built as soon as the size of the fund will justify the move. Tonight the printers of this city will give « banquet, st which wnumber of rominent ex-privters, who have also achieved fame in other lines of life, will be present, well as « few others, who, though not printers, are well known for their heir tnterest in the craft. A MISUNDERSTOOD ~ CONGRESS, What Delegate Flint Says of the Work of the Mr. Chas. R, Flint of New York, s member of the Pan-American congress, was in the city Saturday and, together with Mr. W. E. Curtis, was in consultation with Secre- tary Blaine several hours, Mr. Flint and Mr. Curtis were seen at the Arlington {by Sram reporter and said they were assisting in prepering the reports of tho Pan-American Congress for presentation to the United States Congress. There was, they said, nothing of general interest to be iven to the public at the present time. Mr. Flint, who although largely interested in tho rubber business never stretches the facts, axid he looked for much good to result from the international congress. The sessions being secret, the press haa not given the whole action to the public, and the subject, h thought, was not well understood by those who criticise the conference. While he was far from indorsing the McKinley bill he saw no hostility between that measure and the ciprocity recommendations of the conference, which are satisfactory alike to protectionists ber free traders, the latter seeing in them an approach toward the practice of free trade principles, while e former noted & practical extension of the home market. The conference was provided for bya democratic President and Congress and was carried out by @ republican executive and Con- gress, 80, e said, there coul®? be Ro politics in it and it should not be looked Upon ina partisan light. He thought that under s reciprocity treaty with the American | republics there could be oar eny of other —_countries juggling in tao ray under cover of law, for in these hay the cable and telegraph inform the world of every consignment, The reports of the conference would, he aaid, be presented to Congress within three or four weeks, and then the world could better judge of ita works. iene A Medical and Dental Commencement. The commencement exercises of the medical and dental departments of the National Uni- versity will be held at Lincoln Music Hall to- morrow evening. Mr. Justice Miller, chan- celior of the university, will confer the degrees. Prof. Louis Kolipinski will deliver the address to the graduating class and Prof. John T. Winter, president of the faculty, will award the rizes.’ ‘The valedictory will be pronounced by Bharles M. Buchanan. The exercises will be varied with music by the Marine Band. The graduates in medicine are John A. Daly, D.D.S., and Char! 8. Hodgson of this city, Charles M. Buchanan and Edwin Gladmon, Phar. D., of Virginia; Finley H. Calvert, D.D.S.. of Louisiana; Richard C. Fisher of Pennsylvani and A. F. McMaster of Canada. The i dentistry are Richard P. Cronin an i dh? this city, J. W. Policeman Cotton of the fourth precinct arrested a colored woman in South Washington last Thursday night who gave her name as Mary Smith, She was in a cab with a male com- panioa, and the officer charged her with dis- orderly conduct. When he arrived at the sta- tion the prisoner refused to be searched, but she offered a $20 gold piece as collateral. The officer noticed that she had something in her mouth. When she opened her mouth three 10 gold pieces fell on the floor. The search was continued and €25 more in gold money was found on her, and before going back into the cell two more #10 gold pieces were taken trom her mouth. Friday she was turned over to the Alexandria authorities and taken to that city, where she is charged with the larceny of €105 in gold and a gold watch and chain, ga = atc halt The Weather Last Week. ‘The weather-crop bulletin of the signal office says: The week ending May 10 was cooler than ssl in all districts east of the Rocky moun- tains, except in southern New England and thence southward along the coast to Wilming- ton, N.C., over which section the temperature has been slightly in excess. These frosts caused some damage to vegetables and fruit in the Mississippi valley, ana the cold weather retarded growth of the Principal crops in all sections, In the middle tlantic atates farm work was delayed by rain aad cial ouatant ar Ga Oke ple crops ure re- | ager condition.
