4 ) EVENING STAR. GTON: - May 12, 1890. -Editor, THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Cireulation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Medium is worth other papers published in THE EVEN WASHIN MONDAY. icisanss CROSHY 8. NOYES Leading newspapers in localities where lynch- ings occur do well when they denounce them. It is only by creating a correct public senti- ment that lawlessness can be subdued. The Charleston News and Courier says of the recent assassination by mob at Lexington that it was absolutely without excuse or justification, that it cannot be defended upon any ground of ne- cessity or expediency or right. But this is not the only bad feature of the oc- zarrence. The coroner's jury rendered * verdict that Leaphart “came to his death by gunshot wounds inflicted by unknown partie when persons who had been present at the lymebing were fully identified by the sheriff and witnesses. The News and Courier justly exclaims: “Surely there was never so shameful @ travesty upon justice, so outrageous a de- fiance of the duty which good citizens owe to the state.” —___———_»- <= It is not ability so much as availability that makes a good candidate for the Presidency. Anybody can be President, but not anybody can be elected. It is thoughts like these which are worrying Governor Campbell of Ohio, who iust risk another election as governor before the time comes to nominate presidential can- didates, eo The democrats of Rhode Island are going to celebrate with vociferous enthusiasmn their first victory in thirty years, when they inaugurate their governor, and they are already extending their heartfelt sympathies to their brethren in Tux EQUITABLE LIFE ASSURANCE SOCIETY, No. 120 BROADWAY, NEW YORE. Surplus... +++ $23,250,000 Assets... - 110,000,000 During the past five years the Society has added $12,397,457 to its surplus funds, which is $3,006,087 more than any other Life Asturance Company has ac- cumulated during the same pertod. The amount of dividend paid on each annual divi- dend policy of the Equitable Society in 1889 was greater than the dividend paid om the same policy in 1888. Tho same is true of the dividends of this year lowa, which is probibition state in nearly all that the name implies, — + What is healthful and what harmful to the human constitution is a matter over which the loctors differ widely. The new theory is vroached that perfumes prevent pulmonary affections aud it is based on the alleged fact shat in a French town where perfumery is dis- tilled phthisis is almost unknown. Upon this theory flowers left ina living or sleeping room are beneficial, unless the very excess of odor becomes oppressive. ao A $10,000,000 shortage has been discovered in the Buenos Ayres customs department and North American enterprise doffs its cap to its superior beyond the equator. $< The Canadian hen with a duty of five cents dozen on ber manufactured product, still nds labor and raw material cheap enough to >ompete successfully with the American hen. —————— It is proposed by a disgruntled republican to nge the name of the Australian ballot éys- tem tothe Democratic ballot system. One or two more trials, however, will be given it before the change is made. Sta are The women chosen to be city officials in Edgerton, Kansas, have resigned, not being able to stand ridicule of their ofticial acta. A special election will be held to fill the vacan- cies, and it is safe to prophesy that the men who are to be elected to fill them will endure philosophically ali the criticism that comes, Men are not over-sensitive, In Kansas ts of Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and other states of that neighborhood disaster follows fast upon disaster. The bureau of storms appears to have laid that region un- der ban and enthroned the cyclone as perma- nent soverei a The man who said that George Francis Train, who started around the world not long ago, would fall off on the other side should join the weather predictions bureau. Mr. Train has left Liverpool for New York and will finish his journey around the globe ten days short of the record—making the trip in sixty-two days, Geos. tecbadl The democrats of the third (late Randall) district of Philadelphia find unanimity, ap- parently, in ex-Mayor Richard Vaux, a veteran politician of scholarly attainments, He will probably have little opposition. ——————— With its leader absent in Europe and sick unto death, with three factions endeavoring to keep or get control, with two presidential can- didates trying to manipulate events for their respective interests, Tammany’s present is not enviable, and its future is far from assuring. ‘The truth is thatthe rerson for Tammany’s being, long problematical, is fast ceasing to be obvious even to the spoilsman. ——$$<<—<——- 200,000,000 to {complete the Panama Canal. Those wishing to purchase stock will apply early and avoid the rush. ottand Grover Cleveland will organize a “combine” against the New York Sun and work an eclipse on it i If Chicago wants to dispose of her world’s fair elephant Washington has a new zoologi- cal garden with no animals in it as yet. — The late gerrymander in Ohio did not pre- rent yesterday's cyclone from making a ‘straight cut” to its destination. zits begun A dark horse is not an impossible winner in the Kentucky senatorial race, yeoman Candidate Cleveland has been caught on the Farmers’ Alliance hook, and the anglers are casting in the line for more presidential fish, = — + 8 compared with those of 1889. Iu fact, the ratio of annual dividends has increased each year for the last five years. On maturing 20-year Tontine life and endowment Policies, the Society will, in 1891, return all the pre- miums pald, with interest at rates, varying according toageand kind of policy, from 2 to 6 per cent. per annum. Other Tontine policies show relatively favor- able returns, dependent upon the term of years for which they have been in force and the conditions of the same. ‘These results are absolutely unprecedented in the history of life assurance, and are so remarkable as to be worthy of the careful examination of every person who desires to make an investment which will protect the family in the event of death, or yield a lucrative return in case of long life.
