He states that in March, 1887, he purchased of Smith and others Spring Vale, a tract of 51 acres, and de- fendant, Smith, agreed to use his en- deavors to have the Baltimore and Potomac railroad located on the property. He charges that Smith has failed to do this and has used his influence to have it located on other lands, to his damage to the extent of $20,100. He further charges that defendant, April 3, 1890, improperly and unlawfully caused W. Boarman to advertise the property for sale under deed of trust, repre- senting to him that all the in- debtedness was overdue and ‘well knowing of outstanding claims and of the controversy between plaintiff and defendant as to the amount due, and caused Boarman to sign the advertisement and also to affix the name of H. A. Linger, his co-trustee, and caused said sale to be advertised till stopped by injunction, for which he claims $9,850 damages. The Southern Baptist Convention. After a few short strug- gles favoring “my last ship, &c.,” all the board have knocked under to the superior come-to- stay qualities of this noble ship. There were many qualities of the ship calling for admira- tion, among which one may mention her speed, steadiness in a seaway, rigidity of structure (preventing vibration),’ graceful, easy move- ments, turning power (using helm alone) and high free ed ance latter, associated with her steadiness, gives a gun platform hard to beat. And then the splendid cquipment. Her battery, tested for the first time, gave excel- lent results, and if the target had not borne acharmed life we should have needed a great many more targets. The boats, too, are in keeping with the general excellence. and when “abandon ship” was called there was no lack of room for all the people and room to spare for our visitors, to say nothing of the welcome. ‘The trial has lasted forty-eight hours, i. e., forty-eight consecutive hours under’ way. After starting and before clearing the capes afogset in which delayed us twelve hours, We have had a good mixture of weather, and the tests made of the seagoing qualities of the ship. her motive power, battery and the el ments of smallez importance, were all suce fully carried to a finish, The drilis and tests for completeness of outfit and equipment were very satisfactory, and the enthusiasm evinced by the officers and crew in everything pertain- ing to the efficioncy of the ship speaks well for her future excellence. ‘Then give three cheers and one cheer more for the gallant captain of the Baltimore.” * * * “You're very, very ood, and be it understood, I command a right ood crew.” Which words from the much hackneyed “Pinafore” seem to suit this ship very well. Nerruxg. Noxroux, April 30. as A Promenade Drive. To the Editor of Tue FE: ING STAR: Why doesn’t Washington have a promenade drive? Every city in the United States has one or more, ard of European capitals not one is not so adorned. Such a drive could be ad- mirably arranged at comparatively small ex pense in the White Lot, which is now an almost useless piece of ground. The idea would be to make, in the center of this lot. a graveled circular space, say about 306 fect in diameter, with a music stand in the center. Leading to this from the drive now about the lot should be four drives of appropriate width, one from each side ef the lot. so that car- riages could drive to the music stand and, in the large circular space about it, wait while the band played, then drive out again between the numbers. For the accommodation and pleasure of pedestrians a wide graveled walk with benches at intervals should be made around the entire lot inside of the main drive and also along the radial drives. With the White Lot so improved and the Marme and other bands to piay there between 5 and 7, or other hours in the evenings, we would have in Washington an attraction superior to any thing of similar character anywhere. We have many and beautifui equipages'in Washington, but no one has ever been able to see them col- lected together, and-nobody enjoys them but their owners. I venture the assertion that with the White Lot converted into a prom- nade drive no finer sight could be seen in America than would be presented here on any “music evening.” What do the people and the Commissioners and Congress and the news- papers think of this suggestion?
