Duble for Shooting at Mr. Dubant. Capt. John A. Duble, for whose arrest a war- rant was issued from the Police Court last Sat- urday for an alleged attempt to kill James A. Dubant, as published in yesterday's Star. appeared in the Police Court this morning, the prosecuting attorney having filed an informa- tion for simple assault, The evidence given by the witnesses for the prosecution showed that Capt. Duble called at Dubant’s stable in McDermott’s alley last ‘Ybursday morning and complained about a cow that Dubant kept in his stable. The dis- cussion lasted some minutes and Dubant apply- plying to the captain an insulting epithet told jm to leave the stable. “Will you wait here two minutes?” asked the captain. who felt aggrieved at the remark. “Ob, yes. I'll wait ten minutes if necessary,” lied Dubant. n less than the limit fixed the defendant Te- turned with a pistol in his hand aad Dubant ran around the stable and looked over the gar- dev wall. Just then Capt. Duble fired and the bullet took a piece of brick from the wall about six inches from Dubant’s head. Capt. Duble admitted that he fired the shot. but merely to intimidate Dubant. He said that Dubant applied to him an insulting name and he «ould not stand it. Lawyer Vi gued the case and re- ferred to Capt. Dubie’s excellent reputation and to the provocation given by Dubant. Judge Miller said that there were mitigating circumstances and he wouid impose a moderate penalty. The trouble with the defendant, the Judge said, was that he lost his temper too easily. If be had kuocked Dubant down when he called him that name it would have been different. A fine of $20 was imposed, and counsel noted an appeal. —-———__ St. Mark’s League. Fora long time the question of extending the streets through the Georgetown College grounds has been the subject of much com- ment and the Commissioners have received many letters on the subject, Most of these letters come from Georgetown. Some are petitions praying for relief, others demand that existing obstructions to street extension be removed, The last one of this latter class comes from Geo, W. King and others, who say: “Havingrepeatedly requested and having been often promised that the obstruction on Prospect street should be removed, which Promises have not been fulfilled, and as ex- tensive improvements have been made by us, thereby increasing the taxation, and having been put to much additional cost by said ob- structions, we now, as taxpayers and citizens, demand that said obstructions be immediately removed. We also protest against a permit being granted to the officials of Georgetown y of the western ex- College to obstruct teausions of our str ‘The obstruction above referred to consists of a fence across the street and a small wooden shed or kitchen attached to a one-story frame bouse standing on the grounds of the college, and which were not removed from Prospect avenue when other buildings were removed from the street by the superintendent of streets. Capt, Rossell was called upon for a report and today he submitted the following: “It seems to me that the question of owner- ship of these streets through Georgetown Col- was been settled, and if they be- long to the public the obstructions should be removed.” ‘The board wil! discuss the case, MEMORIAL DAY. The Sun today comes back to the controversy with Mr. Cleveland and says: “Up to the pres- ent time there has been no authoritative denial by Mr. Cleveland of the grossly false and in- decent languxge attributed to him. He has neither repudiated the shamelessly base and cowardly charge that the Sun has attacked Mra, Cleveland, nor attempted to prove it, It is true thatsome of Mr. Cleveland’s political associates, wiser than himself, have been making friendly efforts in newspaper offices and elsewhere to rescue him from the predicament in which the unexpected publication of his words involved him. But there is one circumstance which in- dicates with sufficient distinctness whether these friendly and ingenious efforts are in- interest in the cause of abstract truth or merely by a sudden solicitude for the politi- cal prospects of a sup) interview appeared on ‘Thursday afternoon and Fri without any real or preten cease ae Wem ented did not begin until cre —— ee after the Sun had replied to and after the extent of the inflicted upon himself had be- hereon — apparent to every person of common oreAfter an investigation of our own as to the circumstances atteuding the interview, we are satisfied that the report poy wmaccurate pon ah as it failed to exhibit the language employ the full measure of eee M conceivable grossness d candidate, ‘hursday morning last. jd denial of the ‘The attempt to dis- ted in the World Mr. Cleveland in and its unprintable pro- it is proper to add interview and the exciting cause of Mr. Cleveland's loss of selt- control were the publication in the Sun on Wednesda morning, April 16, of s dispatch yeieal development velopment, from bobegs a oo TRE VANISHING SURPLUS. More or less trick goes with the “trump of | Representative Peters of Kansas on the McKinley Tariff Bill. ud THINKS TRE GOVERNMENT CANNOT LOSE THE | “Wy REVENUE FROM THE DUTY ON SUGAR—A DE- FICIENCY INSTEAD OF A SURPLUS PROBABLE— BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP SEA, Mr. Peters of Kansas has been looking over the figures again to see if the government can spare the revenue which will be lost by the re- peal of the duty on . He has satisfied himself that the money caanot be spared. “To my mind,” he “the palace of the House who control things donot know what they are about. They are between the devil the dee} sea, ‘According to Mr. Mo- Kinley himself his tariff bill wil aredues the serene of the Maat hegpeners $69," pee That is all very good as far as it goes, appeases the men in our ranke who are demanding rev- enue reduction; but the next question is can we afford to do this? Isay no, and I think I can prove it. When the republicans go to examine into things they discover that there is no tre- poten lus to be vepagaaca = oo end of the present ear this great pile of mone: e Treasury wil consist of but $20.000, 000. At the end of th the next fiscal year it will beeven worse; there will be a deficit. “The revenues of the government for the next fiscal year will be $450,000,000, From this, assuming that the McKinley bill is to be- come a law, you must take the $60,000,000 Mr. McKinley estimates as the reduction, This will leave you €390,000,000 with which to run the government. I have just completed a care- ful estimate of what it will cost to operate = overnment that year and it foote A a bo, 000, Leste a marginof but $5,000, this estimate of expenses I have oe ane the regular and olutely necessary appro- priation bills. I have left out the Morrill service pension bill, which will take $50,000,000; the river and harbor bill, which will take @20,000,000; the direct tax bill, which will taxe 817,000,000, and the prisoners of war bill, which will take © 1.000. All of these are likely to pass, and the three largest are rea- sonably certai These latter foot i dee 000.060, to meet which there wiil but #5,000,000 in the Treasury. We will, therefore, come back next session, and be compelled to face an actual deficit in the Treasury of $82,000,000. Tuink of it! Now, I for one don’t see the sense in voting for tl McKinley bill if, as its author says, it reduc: the revenue 860, 000,000, when the money is needed to carry on the government. Of course they can relieve the situation somewhat by suspending the payment of the sinking fund. That will give them 43,000,000, but for the rest the government will have to go into the markets of the world and borrow money upon a new issue of bonds, thus increasing the pub- lic debt, Then, again, the 43,000,000 derived from the suspension of the sinking fund would be only temporai In about five years it would be require ‘to pay off maturing bonds. Unless « halt 1s called we republicans will find ourselves in the most embarrassing position the party has ever known." THE STAR DID IT. How the Nucleus for the National Mu- seum Was Secured, A very interesting fact was developed in the debate in the Senate yesterday on the world’s fair bill. Senator Blair was speaking and he said: “The Senator from Nevada, Mr. Stewart, alluded to his idea of a memorial hall to be built in this dity. It is not an idea to be lightly surrendered. We have the germ of it already in our National Museum in this city. That National Museum originated in this way and I have long thought it was an actof justice to the gentleman whom I am about to name that this important deed of his in connection with the history of his country should be placed upon the public records, t was my chance to board for a considerable time at the bar are in the city of Philadel- plia with Mr. 8, H. Kauffmann of Tae Star in this city during the world’s exposition at Phila- delphia in 1876. As we all know, he is a learned gentleman and a very able writer. He spent many weeks carefuliy examining, viewing and studying the exposition at Philadelphix, and from time to time wrote descriptions of what was there to be seen to Tug Evenixe Stan. I remember many convereatious with this gen- tleman with reference to the wonders which were there exhibited, and wi an @: din misfortune it would be if that exposition shoul be lost when it was broken up and dissolved; that in some oy it ought to be preserved in its most substantial and essential features. He wrote to his paper the suggestion that there be established at Washington a national ‘museum, in which should be ga ed all the various cuciosities aud the more important things, the more iustructive things, which were there ex- hibited, for permanent preservation and as the nucieus around which and in connection with which like objects could be gathered in all fu- ture time. “From that germ came the National Museum in this city, which I believe today to be of more actual use and instruction perhaps—in connec- tion with the Smithsonian Iustitution‘of more ac- tual use to the American people than everything else there is to show to them bere—a perpetual school, an ol ject or @ feature of more interest, of more instruction, of more absolute good to the American people than anything else that there is here. “This great exposition of 1892 or 1893 should be utilized and preserved in the same way. It would require a great enlargement of the same building or the erection of new ones in connec- tion with it, but that feature ought not to be lost sight of. Perhaps immediate legislation not necessary with reference to it, but that memorial building should be erected, and thus this exhibition be made instructive to the na- ticn for all time.” © -eee-- THE TAX SALE. More Bidders Than Usual at the Auc- tion at the Collector’s Office. The regular annual sale of property for delinquent taxes was commenced this morning at 10 o'clock inghe office of the collector of taxes. This he sale that has heretofore taken place in September of each year, By recent legisiation the time was changed to April 22 for this year and during the month of March hereafter. Mr. C. W. Collins conducted the sale. There were many bidders, and more property was sold today than on any one day at previous tax sales. The property coming under the letters Ato H was sold today. The sale will continue e every day until completed. “The Black Pearl” Defeats Isaac Myer.
