Atravon's.—The spring and summer season of light and refreshing opera was opened at Albaugh’s last night by Carleton’s company in the tuneful opera of anon,” which at all Seasons is a pleasant thing to see and hear. The opening night was _auspicionsiy balmy and the foyer of the theater at 8 o'clock presented the appearance of “‘A night in June.” The curtain rose at 8:15 and the play began with Miss Marion Langdon as Nanon, instead of Miss Clara Lane, who was seriously indisposed. Miss Langdon, considering she took the part ice, did very well indeed, and her work was fully appreciated. She has a | strong, clear voice, not highly pitehed, and her | Stage manner is easy. Mr, Carleton won the | first appiause of the evening as Marquis | J’ Auhgne. Miss Vincent made a really beau- | tital Nixon de L’Encios in face and figure and | met the requirements of the part well. The | choruses, as a rule, were strong, with moments of weekness, and the entire opera might be | similarly described. It was better in some than in others, but it will be improved ch succeeding night of its production | and the general work of the company will show a marked change as it grows familiar with its | surroundings, | on very short not ‘Mr. Murray. Mr. Bigelow, Mr. | Blake and Miss Wisdom are worthy of ‘more | than passing notice. “Nanon” will be repeated | each night this week. ! It is scarcely to be expected that i of the appearance of Augustin Daly's pany in Washington would be in the nature of acriticism of the performance. ‘The only | point to be criticised is that Mr. Daly adds thirty-three and one-third per cent to his New York prices. As to the work of his com- pany and his own efforts to bring it to a high stundard nothing can be said except in praise. It is a work of art. with its imperfections, of course, but none the less art, and most enter- | taming and delightful art. The play last | night at the National was “The Railroad of | Love,” Americanized from the German and ; ry bright and very funny. Miss Kehan, Mrs. Gilbert, Miss Irving, Mr. Drew, Mr. Lewis and in fact each member of the cast did with graceful touch the individual parts which constituted an exquisite whole, At the end of the second act, atter a recall to Miss Rehan, Mr. Daly was called on for a speech | and he made one in his usual tinished manner— | finished it quick, that is to say. Not less brilliant than the performance was the au- dience and every box was filled, save the stage | box reserved tor the President and his party, who atthe last moment sent their regrets, “Taming of the Shrew” tonight. Harris’ Buov.—The well-known melodrama of “Shadows of a Great City” is not new to Washington theater goers, yet the play as_pre- sented last night captivated the large audience present. ‘The scenic effects are very creditable, plot is laid in New York city and its imme- | diate vicinity and the scenes true to nature. ‘The company is an unusnaly strong one and together combined to give a performance of superior excellence. As Jom Cooper, John Marshall was very good. Ale Nathans, a pawn- broker, by Wm. Cullington, was a character study in itself, while the detective of Mr. W. H. } Burton was easy and lifelike. A colored hodcarrier named Wellington Lathron was before the Police Court yester- day for assaulting a bricklayer named Joseph McCailam. Lawyer Carrington appeared for the hodcarrier and admitted that his client was guilty of assault, but claimed that under the circumstances connected with it a lignt penalty should at least be imposed. It ap- peared in evidence that the hodcarrier “shot” the bricks too near the bricklayer and the latter struck the hodearrier with one of them. ‘Two hours later Lathron, to get even, dropped a brick from an upper story on the bricklayer and came near knocking him through the joists to the basement. The committee of organization of the new University Club met last night at the rooms of the Board of Trade. Mr. James H. Voorhees was elected chairman and Dr. Weston Flint secretary. A constitution was adopted subject tothe future action of the club when more fully organized. It was decided that the chair- man should appoint a committee of thirteen, composed of one alumnus from each of the colleges represented at the meeting, who should have power to act upon all nominations for membership made to them, and that they should admit 200 applicants to mem- bership, and when that number is reached the club is to be considered as formed and shall proceed to organization and the election of its officers. The meeting was in every sense satisfactory, and the greatest interest was shown in the new organization, which now promises to be a complete success. The meeting adjourned to meet April 23 at the residence of Mr. W. D. Cabell, 1407 Massachu- setts avenue, when ail others who have been admitted will have been notified and invited to be present. For more than fifty years cream of tartar and bicar- bonate of soda have been used for leavening purposes, and these ingredients, mixed in proper proportions, with sufficient farinaceous material added to preserve the strength of the powder unimpaired, constitute the only standard for a pure baking powder. The Chemist to the Department of Agriculture, in order to determine the minimum limit of amount of filling consistent with good keeping qualities, made aad published in Bulletin No. 13 (page 622) four different formule, in all of which these ingredients, and these only, are used.* This standard for the ingredients of a pure baking powder (cream of tartar, bicarbonate of soda, and a little farinaceous material to preserve the strength), recognized by housekeepers and scientists alike, has always been ad- hered to by the manufacturers of ‘“Cleveland’s Superior Baking Powder.” The composition of this powder has for years been published on every label, and the accuracy of the analysis confirmed by National and State Chemists and by Food Commissions. “Cleveland's is absolutely the best and most desirable baking powder manufactured.” ® Ammonia or alum powders may occasionally test a trifle higher, but they are dangerous to health, aud, whatever their strength, they should be avoided. 7 August 17, 1859, recommends on page 623 that manufacturers be required by law to use a label giving the composition of the baking powder sold. The manufacturers of Cleveland's Superior Baking Powder have used such a label for years, and in this respect stand alone. The Government Heport, CITY ITEMS.
