TO PLAY BALL TODAY. The Season in Washington Will Open This Afternoon. YORK—THE ASSOCIATION GAMES WILL BEGIN ApRit, 19—THE PRESENT HaPPY PROSPECTS OF Mr. Hewett got just what he asked for in New York at the Atlantic Association meeting yesterday, and just a little more, thus proving what Tue Stan said, to the effect that he is likely to be treated by his new associates with extreme consideration, The season will open on the 19th of April, one day in advance of that reeommended by Mr. Hewett. Each club will play 126 games, making four trips abroad. "Phe schedule has not yet been completed, but probably will be in a few days. The ussociation adopted a constitution similar to that of the National League and appointed the tollowing umpires: J. Nolan, Lowell; Larry Corcoran, New Haven, J. T. Valentine, Brook- lyn, and James. Kelly, New York. who was ap- pointed at a previous meeting. J. B. McGrath of Summit, N.J., is sub-umpire. Somebody proposed to change the name of the organization from the Atlantic Association to the Eastern League, but the idea was not favored. The motion was unanimously lost. ‘Whe delegates present were President J. M. Bradon, J. M. Ballard, S. W. Trott and J. Scho- maker, N . O'Melia, Jersey City; Jeboa Mallen. Wilmington: Wm. Barnie, Balti- more; W. F. Hewett, Washington; W. H. Burn- them. New Haven, J. A. Cucworth, Worcester, and A. W. Lang, Hartford. ‘THE OPENING TODAY. Today at 4:15 the gong at Capitol Park will ring aud thus formally open the season here. ‘There have beea a great many changes in the situation since its brazen voice was last heard; there has been a general desertion of players i from the old league, the wiping out of the Washington perronnel, the formation of a new body of players, the sudden extravagance of | the league in sdmitting Brooklyn and/ Cimeinnati, the later regret of the; league at this rash step and struggles to remedy | the evil, the sacrifice of the two tail-end clubs | to the general good, and an end of the great farce. Mr. Hewett finds himself instead of an | ‘unwelcome appendage on an unwilling league a joyfully received member of a grateful asso- Gapion, and his chances are reversed from those of successive and continuous defeat to those of good fortune and a championship. ‘The last gong stroke opened a 60-cent ball game—this one will be the slogan nute fora quarter contest, and the public rejoices thereat, THE GAME TODAY. The game today will be between the Wash- ington team and the Rochester aggregation from the American Association. The “Sena- bl —you may break, you may shatter the | om ne if you will, but the shade of the dome pa code ‘round us still—will occupy seats in the diamond chamber as follows: Nicholas, catcher; Maloney and Phillips, pitchers; Whistler, first base; O'Brien, second base; Mhil, third base; Riddle, short stop; Jordan, left field: Bader, center field; Bird, right field. Stover will not play today. Riddle is assigned to short field in the absence of Gleason, who has not yet arrived from St. Louis, The Rochesters present a strong team, including two old Washington players—Oldfield behind the bat and James Knowles, the goughty guar- dian of third. Bob Barr will probably pitch ou Monday for the visitors. The exhibition games will be played as fol- lows: Rochester to-day and Monday; 3d, Le- high University; 4th and 5th, Hamilton, On- tario: 7th, Willams College; 8th and 9th, Bos- ton; 10th and Lith, Cuban Giants; 14th and 15th, Riehmond; 18th, Gorhams, N. Y. There are thus several open dates that will probably be flied later on. —_.— A Cranmixo Barratios or Beatty on Parade at Lincoln Post fair. CAPITOL GLEAN Gs. Urgent Deficiency Bill—Investigation of Supervising Architect Windrim, Etec. The conferees on the urgent deficiency ap- Propriation bill have agreed toa report, The | conferees disagree altogether on one point— the amendment inserted by the Senate at the instance of the committee on ir- rigation, appropriating 20,000 to deter- mine, under direction of the Secretary of Agriculture, the proper location for artesian wells for irrigation purposes. This disagree- ment is said to be due to the fact that some of tue conferees think this money should be ex- pended under direction of the superintendent of the geogical survey. Of the other Senate amend- | 5, ments the appropriation for office expenses of the coast survey is cut down from $12,000 to 5.000: the appropriation of $50,000 for publi- cation of oficial war records is cut out; the ap- | propriation for clerks, &c., for land offices is reduced from 000 $2 House bill), and the specific sums inserted by the Senate for payment of counties? ar- rears, &c., are cut out, leaving the ph pa tion for these purposes indefinite. The bill, as agreed to, appropriates €24.253,277, a reduc- tlon of £55,500 from the amount appropriated as the bill passed the Senate, INVESTIGATING ARCHITECT WINDRIM. The Senate committee on public buildings and grounds yesterday began to investigate charges against the supervising architect of the ‘Treasury department. charging that improper | influence was brought to bear in the selec- tie of a site for a public building at ingfield, Mo. Wooley of Spring- Held, one of the firm who offered what is | known as the south end site, was called and | eharged that the selection of the north end site was the result of a corrupt bargain, brought | about by certain property holders and was not for the interest of the city. The offer of the first site, he said. had been accepted by the Secretary of the Treasury and later on had been voked, and up to the present time no reason had been given for this action by the depart- ment. The committee then adjourned to meet again today and examine a few witnesses now in Washington, after which a recess of about ten days willbe taken toenabie other par- ties now in Springfield an opportunity to get here and be exammed.
