The proposition to celebrate the centennial of the founding of this city was considered at a meeting held last evening of the executive committee of the board of trade. It was de- cided that a celebration should be held. As to the exact time two dates were proposed, namely: One the 16th of Jaly next, which is the centennial of the ap- proval by Washington of the bill fixing the site of the city; the other April 15, 1891, the centennial of the laying of the corner stone of the bounds of the District. It was concluded that the latter date would be the most desirable for holding a celebration owing to the season of the year. A general discussion followed as to the form of the celebration, and while no definite action was taken the general sentiment seemed to be in favor of inviting some dis- —— man to deliver an oration, to be wed bya military purade. It is proposed te invite the governors of the various states to | take a celebration, When tbe general of aplan have been agreed upon, the entire matter will be submitted to the ‘d of ‘trade for ite action. —— Caught in the Act of Pilfering. ‘The case of Leroy Coles, the colored mes- Senger at the Bureau of Engraving and Print- ing who was recently arrested on @ charge of robbing one of the printers in the bureau of a silver watch, was heard in the Police Court Yesterday. One of the most respectable and respected citizens of Montelair, N.J., has been Jas. Tut- hill, a boss mason. He came from Port Jarvis five years ago and found plenty of work. He and his wife won the respect and esteem of their neighbors, Mr. Tuthill became very popular with bis fellow townsmen and every one who knew him liked him. Shortly after Tuthill settled in Montclair several bold burglaries were committed in rapid succession, The burglar was fearless. He selected the finest residences, As he wag always masked no one could give a ee tion of him. A week ago Monday night the residence of George Booth, a mason and personal friend of Tuthill, was entered. -. Eobertson, who is think- ing of moving to Montclair, was Mr. Booth's guest that night. He was aroused by his bea room window being opened and a slim-built man lightly po into the room. Robertson watched him and saw him cooly strike a match and look about. Then he abstracted Robert- son's gold watch from his vest and the match went out. Robertson jumped outand grappled with him. The cold muzzle of a pistol made him let go quickly. The burglar laughed sar- castically and swung himselt out of the window and got away. In a few minutes the burglar was, less than a block away, getting into the residence of John Manuel, another mason aud a warm friend of | Mr. Tuthill. Mr. Manuel was aroused before | the burglar got into his room and gave him battle. The thief’s mask came off and Manuel could hardly believe his senses, for the face he recognized was that of his friend, the village favorite, Jim Tuthill. The latter broke away. Asearch was made of his house and, buried in the party wall and thrown in concealed crev- ices, were ri watches, diamonds, pocket- books, money, bracelets, breastpins, earrings, watch chains and every kind of jewelry, repre- senting many thousands of dollars, and some which were stolen years ago, The burglar had aes on his horse and rode furiously to mfield, where he took an express train to Hoboken, Constable Allworth traced him to New York, to Brooklyn and finally to Greenpoint, where he arrested him Monday, Minister Reid Arrives Home. ‘The French line steamship LaChampagne sr- rived at Fire Island, forty-eight hours overdue, last night, In favorable weather she usually gets in on _y afternoon.
