The Measure Not Yet Completed—Modi- fications Still Probable. ‘The majority of the ways and means commit- tee were not able to complete their tariff bill so as to report it to the whole com- mittee today, as they had expected to do. There are two or three items not yet settled upon and some items Upon which an agreement had been reached have been opened for reconsideration in conse- quence of protests that have been received. Some modifications have been made and many others are being earnestly pressed. The com- mittee considers all protests that they deem worthy of consideration and this involves considerable of a review of their past work. The silver and lead ore men, the carpet manufacturers, the silk manufacturers, the shoe men of New En- ory and the sugar men are very active in efforts to get modifications and changes madeinthe bill The shoe men still have iat having hides put back on the free and the inser, men hare not given up hope | o securing tah te han | the bill. at posit pro- vides. With all the struggle between different interests that is now going on it will not be suring if there are a number of important jons made in the bill before it is re- ported to the whole committee. Very few changes way be made in the whole committee after the bill once gets there, but some are pected to be made in the A DEMOCRATIC BILL, ‘The democrats of the committee will prob- ably not make any attempt to change the schedule in the McKinley bill, but will report against it and submit a bill of their own based on the Mills bill, but going further in the way of, giving free raw materiai than that bill went. the New Engiand manufacturers ap onng less consideration in this Hine McKinley bill it is probable that the democrats will offer them about all the free raw material they ask & for.
