THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON: SRURSDAY. ——— CROSHY Ss. NOYES. ————— tne EVENING STAR bas the fullest Local Cireulation of any Newspaper in the World, aed as an Advertising M: is worth more than all the other papers in Washington. Sew York Ofice: Bom 63, Trituse Building SS EEE CE Boom 93, Tribuse_Bullding. ‘The people of Washington, outside of those who sre financially interested in some one of the proposed sites, want a post-office imme- diately on some convenient site and they attach comparatively little importance to the inci- ental victory of one set of site-owners over the others. They wish the post-office to be located on purchased ground and not ona park, and they wish it to be reasonably near the busi center, and reasonably fonvenient of access. These wishes being @ratitied, they are ready to accept avy site which is immediately offered to them with a post-office attached, The bill appropriating for a post-office and appoint- ing a commission to select the site expressed this public sentiment at a time when a dead- lock existed in Congress over the site question, ‘Those who favored it, except such as believed that they could foresee a decision of the pro- posed commission in favor of the particular site in which they were interested, indicated by 80 doing that if they could secure the post Oftice they would accept anyone of the pro- posed sites which a reasonable commission would be likely to accept, These same men should, and ia most causes do, favor now the acceptance by the Senate of the House’s pro- position of the Pennsylvania avenue site, as the quickest way of securing a creditable Post ofice, If the Senate had, be- fore the House acted, selected another site, they would have favored its Sceeptance by the House. They are for that action by either house which will give them the post-office. Ifa dead lock on the subject Should arise between the two houses they would favor the appropriation for the post- Office and a leaving of the question of site toa commission, or its decision by tossing pennies. At this time when no deadlock exists they Strougly advocate the Senate's acceptance of the House bill, which will give to the city Bpeedily a creditable building on « good site. eo The board of trade will naturally apply its Policy of hostility to grade crossings to the pro- posals of new steam railroad lires desiring to enter the city as well as to the existing cross- ings. Whether it is the Drum Point road asking to be admitted on one side of the city, or the Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railroad Co. and the Virginia roads, asking admission on the other side, the same principle should in the public interest be enforced. New steam railroad tracks within the city limits should be required asa general rule either to be elevated, so that the public can pass under them, or depressed, so that the public can pass over them on the roof of a tunnel or on bridges without long approaches. The character of the proposition of the Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railrosd Co. also calls attention to the neces- sity of protecting our parks to be as well as those in existence from railroad encroachment. Of course the extensive park which is to rise on the reclaimed flats is not to be disfigured and cut off from the city by a wide belt of surface tracks, a The excellent discipline in the republican party may be relied upon to ensure, perhaps with some modifications, the passage through the House of the new tariff bill, although sev- eral of ite provisions are distasteful to members from certain states. The chief difficulty has been over sugar, and that chiefly because Cali- fornia, Kansas and Nebraska have entered re- cently npon the production of this article from beets. It is noticeable that the sharp reduc- tion of the duty was inserted without the ac- companiment of a bounty, The Senate wiil probably amend the bill in various respects, re ‘The meeting of the board of trade last night brought together a large number of represen- tative citizens, and several matters of great local importance were considered. The great- est need of the city of Washington today is that its people should get together, sink for a time personal wishes and differences, develop a strong public spirit and work together without friction for the public welfare. Such organi- gations as the board of trade are capable of exercising ® powerful influence in accom- Plishing these resulta Last night's meeting gave excellent promise. Every public-spirited citizen will wish for the new organization the highest degree of success, and in its labors for the welfare of Washington will give it his encouragement and support, ———6j9.[-——___ The general adoption of the Ohio presi- dential idea of the choice of electors by the several districts in a state would have the good effect of breaking up the pivotal state in- centive to dishonesty.
