JODGE DRAKE'S PROPOSED SUBSTITUTE POR THE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE VOTED DOWN—CAL~ VINISM THOROUGHLY DISCUSSED—INYANT DAM- BATION, DIVORCE, ETO. The revision of the confession of faith was again before the Washington city presbytery at the meeting held today at the 9th-street church. The presbytery decided at the meet- ing held last Monday the question ‘Do you de- sire a revision of the confession” in the affirm- ative. This was the first portion of the report of the committee and today the presbytery considered the second part of the report, which Proposed certain changes. There was a good attendance of the members of the presbytery and « number of ladies and others listened with interest to the discussion. The venerable Rev. Dr. Scott, the father of Mra. The speaker id that he agreed witli President Patton, and this statement led toa digression caused oF several questions fired at the i poe from a parts of the room. After this he resumed the thread of his argument and said that the idea that God condemned forall eternity men to everlasting damnation was nota partof Cal- z INFANT DAMNATION he placed in the same category and he thought that the statementin the confession in regard to infante was liable to be misunderstood. He claimed that what was now being aimed at was to define Calviaism and to determine whether such statements were a part of the Calvinistic faith or not, In the opinion of Rev. My. McIlvaine the gen- eral assembly wanted information as to what the presbyteries desired. He thought that the pres! ytery onght to furnish information. He spoke of loctrine of reprobation, and said that as it reads at present one man understood it in one way and another in some other way. The pro- posed amendment did not cut into the heart of Calvinism, but simply showed what their doctrine meant. JUDGE DRAKE'S SUBSTITUTE VOTED DOWN. A rising vote was then taken on Judge Drake's substitute and it was lost by a vote of 17 to 8. Rev. Dr. Fullerton, who refused to vote at the last meeting on the question of revision, then gave a general explanation of his position in regard to the proposed changes as to the recommendation of the report, striking out the clause which mentions desertion, together with adultery, as a canse for divorce, He said that he believed that adultery was the only scriptural ground for divorce. He was willing to accept the change which involved the ques- tion of infunt damnation, so that there would no longer be any ground for the statement that the church believed in infant damnation. As to Calvin's belief in this doctrine he said that there was rap one statement in Calvin's writ- ings of this doctrine. Some members of the Westminster assembly believed in this doctrine and others did not, hence the ambiguous ex- Pression in the confession. But he did not think that Calvin for this single sentence ought to be severely condemned now, nor that re- roaches should be heaped on the Westminster ivines. In a great many particulars he said that Calvin was in advance of his age und allowance should be made for the peculiarities of belief held by good men 80 many years ago. Rev. Dr. Hamlin inquired if the speaker thought that he intended to criticise or reflect Upon Calvin. Dr, Fullerton said that he did not and Dr. Hamlin expressed his satisfaction, as he would not be so misunderstood. He agreed with all that had been said or could be said in regard to the greatness of Calvin. His only point had been that there was no reason to hold to the error of any man. Bey, Dr. Bartlett took the same ground, ELECTION IMPLIEG REPROBATION. Continuing Rev. Dr. Fullerton supported the committee in their recommendation to omit the controversial allusions to the church of Rome, He held, however, that the doctrine of reprobation was essential to the Calvinistic system. He maintained that election implied reprobation. All evangelical churches, he said, believed that a certain number of men would be lost and a certain number be saved. He re- served the discussion of the doctrine of the bondage of the will and the imputation of righteousnesy until the committee had an op- portunity to explain their position. Dr. Ful- jerton said that he was opposed to the motion to consider the report seriatim. In this particular Rev. M. Ramsdell agreed with him. He said that he was opposed to making any change in the confession. While willing to unite in making a new state- ment of belicf he was opposed to patching up the old garment and allow men to strike out in certain phrases and insert their ideas of what Calvinism ws. was reminded by Dr. Bartlett that his ition to make a new statement of doc- was voted down at the last meeung. The presbytery decided to consider the report seriatim, and the discussion was interrupted at 12:30 by a motion to take s recess until 2 o'clock. After recess the consideration of the report was resumed, and the prospect seemed to be that most of the changes proposed will be adopted, ———— PREPARATIONS FOR WORK. What the Washington Club Will Do aod What President Young Says. Base ball matters in Washington are ata temporary standstill, awaiting the tardy return of Mr. Walter Hewett, who is expected this afternoon. He had several men to see on his way home from Cleveland, and it is probable thathe will bring some interesting news back with him. Nothing has been done on the new grounds, corner of 17th and U streets, but work will undoubtedly be begun on the fences just as soon as 8 contract can be made for the job. Secretary Burket enid this morning that he thought there would be sufficient time for the preparation of the grounds before the opening of the exhibition season, but there may be several unimportant details about the stands left unfinished, After playing four Urges at home, April 29 and 30 and May i and 2, the team will go away forten gawes, thus giving time for the completion of the grounds and accommodations. THE EXHIBITION GaMES 20 far arranged'will be as follows: March 29 and 30, Rochester (Amer. Aas.); April 3, Le- bigh University; April 4.and 5, Hamilton (In- ternational Ass.); April 7 and 8, Williams Col- lege; April 10 and 11, Cuban Giants; April 16, at Baltimore; April 17, Baltimore at Washing- ton; April 21 and 22, Wilmington (Atlantio ere are several dates which will probably be filled in a fgw days. The team will report for duty about the 20th, so as to have a week for practice before beginning to play, ‘WHAT PRESIDENT YOUNG Gare. President Young returned to the city Satar- day morning.
