Another Fatal Game of Crap in This City. 4 DISPUTE ABOUT TEN CENTS AND A DEADLY CUT BETWEEN THE RIBS—THE CORONER'S IN- QUEST—CHARLES LEONAKD HELD FUR THE MURDER OF WILLIAM SAYRE. One week ago yesterday afternoon a party of young men were engaged in a friendly game of “crap,” which is better known as “7-ll," near the K street bridge across Rock creek. To make the game interesting a few pennies were in the “pot.” Charles Leonard and William Sayre were among the players, No policeman appeared to break up the game and the pl: eontinued to shake the bones until Leonard lost, his last penny, Sayre and another young man continued to play the game and were interested in the money which was being thrown for, Having drunk considerable beer the bankrupt gambler imagined that he, too, was interested in the “stake” and he picked up a 10-cent piece which did not belong to him, Sayre objected to the game being interrupted in such a manner and he took Leonard to task about picking up the coin, “Put the money down and stop fooling,” said Sayre. “I won't do it,” answered Leonard. Leonard stood with one hand in his pocket and in the other he held the coin. Some angry words followed, and Leonard, it is charged, STABBED SAYRE IN THE siDE with a pen knife. Leonard walked quietly away and Sayre was taken toa drug store by his companions, The wound was dressed at the Columbia hospital and the injured man then went to his home on Turnbull’ street, in the county. It was not thought that the wound was a dangerous one and but little attention Was puid to it by the injured man or his friends until Friday, when he grew worse. Saturday night his condition becam> serious and yester- day morning he died. Leonard was then arrested as a murderer and Dr. Shaeffer made an autopsy on the body of Sayre. He discovered that the stab was be- tween the ninth and tenth ribs and cuused Sayre's death. THE INQUEST. Mr. Carrington was present at the inquest Yesterday as Leonard's counsel and heard the evidence of the witnesses given against his client. The Jury returned a verdict that Sayre came to his death at the hands of and the prisoner was committed to jail. —_—_-- Still in a Critical Condition. Theodore Grebe or Greve, the man who at- tempted suicide Saturday by shooting himself rather than be arrested, as published in Satur- day's Stak, has been removed from the emer- gency to the Garfield hospital. He is yet in a critical condition and no one is allowed to see him. This morning the physician at the hos- pital said that the patient was doing extremely well under the circumstances, = THE FAIR ON THE LAKE FRONT. The Rallroad Tracks to be Put Under Ground and a Larger Park Secured. The Mlinois Central railroad is ready to wholly surrenfler its present right of way aloug the luke front at Chicago and in lieu of the 200 feet it now has be given aright of way 300 feet wide, beginning on a line 1,000 fect eust of Michigan avenue. This throws the road on made ground out in the lake, A condition is to be made that the tracks are tobe sunk to within a foot of the lake level and the tracks covered over. As the top of this covered way would be slightly elevated above the level of Michigan avenue a fine view of the lake would be preserved, there being no engines or cars to obstruct the view. Beyond or to the cast of the right of way of the rail- road it is proposed to Gill in 550 feet further out, The Mlinois Central, it is said, is willing to relinquish all its riparian rights it now claims, accepting the depressed Ss of way, and will undertake the work of fillin long the whole of the lake front park to the dock line established by the government engineer 1,850 feet east of Michigan avenue. In return tor this work of filling the railroad company asks to be granted space for a great passenger station opposite Washi mm and Madison streets, in what is now the to cost about & million doilars, According to the proposed ent the western front of the exposition buildings would be on the line of the present tracks, leaving as much asthe lake front park now contains for an ornamental setting for the buildings; the space covering over the Llinois Central tracks would forma promenade 300 feet wide and a mile in length, aud the space farther east would be utilized’ for fair build- ings, This plan provides an area to be covered with buildings of over 100 acres, which is — cent more than any world’s fair ever under roof, leaving over 100 acres of open space. The meeting of the world’s fair executive committee Saturday afternoon was with closed doors, but one piece of business transacted was an order to the secretary to issue notices for a meeting of the subscribers to the fund. A signifi- cant point in connection with this order was that ho date was fixed for this meeting of subscrib- ers, an reason for this, it is understood, Was that the 5,000,000 calculated upon had not ali been subseril Up to Saturday the sub- scriptions re; amount to $4,498,000, or about $500,000 under the mark. A DISCOVERY. others 5 by 6 inches, are proof of his ingenuity. Upon the smallest one is written the Lord's BARRY G, FRANKLIN CAUSES 4 SUXDAT WoRNINe SENSATION BY TRYING TO KILL MINS LILLIAN MOORE—XARROW ESCAPE OF TEE TOUNG Lap? FROM INSTANT DEATH, Harry G. Frankland was enjoying © nap om ‘an iron bed in the second precinct police sta tion this morning when called upon bys Sram reporter, He was there on « charge of at- tempting to murder Miss Lillian Moore, the seventeen-year-old dsughter of Mr. James Moore, the paper banger, who resides at No, 1342 Sth street northwest Frankland, it alleged, fired six shots at Miss Moore and tried to send the seventh bullet into her body, but the weapon missed fire. The pistol was a small 22-caliber revolver and had not enough force to send the builet through the intended victim's skull, Frankland is thirty-two years old. Last October he went to work for Mr. Moore and was given a home at his house. FROM CHICAGO, He formerly lived in Chicago, where, it ts alleged, be deserted his wife and three chil- dren. That was in 1886, and he afterward came back here. His mother resides in this city at No. 724 7th street southwest, While living at Mr. Moore's house Frankland fell in love with the daughter and was so steady and persistent im his intentions that her parents dscided to get rid of him and so Mra. Moore senthim a note telling bim that he was no longer wanted there. Much against his wishes Fronkland left the house and founda home elsewhere, Since leaviug the home of the Moore family six weeks ago be had only seen Mise Lillian once before the eventful encounter yesterday. THE SHOOTING. Frankland met the young lady yesterday and wished to converse with her, but she refused to have anything to say to him, and he fired Six shots at her. The shooting occurred at Columbia street and Khode Island avenue. Two shots entered her bead and another bullet penetrated her shoulder. FEANKLAND ARRESTED. Frankland threw away his revolver and at tempted to escape. There were several young men standing not far away. The shooting caused considerable excitement and the y: men seemed afraid to touch him. Mr, Samuel Hershey, an elderly gentleman who understood what was the matter, was determined in his efforts to capture the would-be murderer and picking up a brick he threw it with consider- able force at the fugitive. The missile struck its mark and left its print on Frankland’s face, Then Policeman Asher picked up the wounded man and locked him up, THE WOUNDED omL. While Mr, Hershey was acting the partof a good citizen his wife was doing what she could to relieve the wounded girl, who was taken into the house of her auut, No, 931 Rhode Island avenue, where Drs. Poole and Janney attended her. Dr. Henderson, Mr. Moore's family phy- sician, soon arrived aud took charge of the pa- tient, The wounds are not likely to prove fatal, The injured girl was unconscious for s short while. MISS MOORE'S STORY OF THE ENCOUNTER. She soon recovered and told the story of the shooting. She was onber way to the house of an old lady to whom she had been in the habit of reading the Bible. Frankland stopped hea and wanted her to accompany him. She re- fused and attempted to run, but be grabbed her and said he would shoot her if she did pot go with him, She broke away and started to Tun, when he began firing. FRANKLAND'S STORY. Frankland told a Srax reporter: “I first started going with her one Sunday evening when the mother sent us out to maila letter.
