Arranging for the Quarterly Gathering of Veterans at the Pension Agency. ‘The regular quarterly payment of pensions will begin at the pension agency next Tues- day. Mr. 8. L. Willson, agent for the pay- ment of pensions, in discussing this event said toa Sram reporter this morning: “We keep the office open on the first pay day from 6:30 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon, and you may be sure weare kept busy, too. We have anextra force of clerks on hand and they have all they can attend to, The queer part of it all is that out of the 1,800 or 1,900 pensioners who are paid on the first day fully 1,500 call early in the morning, as though they were afraid the money might give out, Asa result we have more than we can attend to in the morning, and in the afternoon, as likely as not, half our force will be idie. Other pensioners, too, fail to put in an appearance at all for several’ days, as it is thought they would not be attended to the first day. Ifsome of those who crowd into line in the morning and have to wait their turn to be paid would only put off their visits until afternoon it would make matters ever so much easier for us and for them, too. With our force of clerks we are able to attend to all in one day if they would only come in detachments.” ——— Another Move in the Canal Case. Col. H. K. Douglass, attorney for F. T. God- dard and others, general creditors of the Chesa- peake and Ohio canal to the amount of $70,000 for work done on the canal, filed in the canal cases in the court at Hagerstown, Md.. yesterday petition in behalf of these creditors, The petition does uot take an appeal from the decision of Judge Alvey to appoint receivers, but says that it is desirable and necessary for the court, in reference to any further action, to have more satisfactory and conclusive informa- tion with regard to the matters necessary to be inquired into than can be furnished by the re- port of the receivers. The petition therefore preys that a commissioner or commissioners be appointed by the court, before whom such testimony shall be take: ——»—___. The Bennings Disaster.
