F. B. Noves, Treasurer EVENING STaR Newspaper Co. Sabscribed and sworn to before me this tenth day of February, A.D. 1890. Jou T. C. CLaRK, Notary Public. a For forty-three years the Mormons have had control of the municipal government of Salt” Lake City. It is likely that they have lost it to- day. This will mean the overthrow of Mor- monism in Utah, for the latter event would fol- low the other after no great lapse of time. The cause for the hope ix the steady growth of the Liberal or “Gentile” party for several years, In 1870 the vote on Delegate for Congress was: Gentile, 1,469; Mormon, 21,656. With some fluctuations the Liberal vote increased until in 1988 it was 3,454 to the Mormon 10,000. In 1889 in the Territorial election the anti-Mormon strength was 6,500 in round numbers, while the Mormon was 14.000. These are the figures for the entire Territory. At the ‘89 Territorial election the Liberals had a majority of 41 in the city. In the last twoelections the Liberals have gained in the Legislature. The passage of the Edmunds-Tucker act and the steady inflow of anti- Mormon ii igrants have enabled the Liberals to register in the present election a majority of 1,993. The increase of the anti- polygamous element is the increase of morality, and all good citizens desire that the Mormon power shall be broken in Salt Lake and Utah. ———— The common saying that republics are un- grateful cannot be applied to this republic's treatment of those who have been disabied in its military service. The pension fund is sev- enty millions, with the prospect that it will be increased during the present session by the emall bills and general pension legislation—not inelading a measure presently to be consid- ered—to an amount above one hundred millions per anuum. The proposition supported by Gov. Hovey of Indiana for the pay- ment of a general service pen- sion will largely increase this amount, ifenacted. There are about twelve hundred thousand pensioners aud at the proposed rate of eight dollars per month the sum per anuum would be #115,200,000. A separate measure providing for arrearages carries about $600,- 000,000 additional. These various sums when added transcend the ability of ordinary minds to comprehend and the average citizen cannot discover the ways and means for raising the sum total, let him ponder the problem ever so long. But the people elected the Congress of the United States for this and other purposes. ‘The wholesale increase of the pension list is all right if the people agree to it. If the tax- payer cannot stand it his voice will surely be heard in the land and that before many days. ——$—$<—<— ae North Dakota will tarnish her new statehood by the paasage of the bill chartering a lottery scheme. The state's finances may be in an em- barrassed condition, bills for campaign ex- penses may press upon legislators, and farmers whose crops have failed may need provisions and seed wheat—but the money should be raised in some other way. It will be better in the long run for the state to borrow or even to beg. ——$<— «+ = Mr. Barboza, Minister of Finance of the United States of Brazil, tirds it to be necessary todeclaim against office-secking, which shows that all the energy in that line is not confined tothe more northern United States, Barboza says: “Let us not contribute to continue in force under the new situation the habits of a nation of place-hunters.” What significant words—full to the brim of warning—*a uation of place-bunters.” $< + The Maryland legislature proposes to impose a@ tax of 350 on the cigarette seller in the hope ofabating the nuisance in that state, but the hope 1s vain. The legislature might as well try to prevent lying. —_ Mr. Fanz, the Indiana tinner who was so “shamefaily abused” at Aberdeen, Miss., re- cently, and disappeared to die in the swamps victim to the political intolerauce of the south, bas been discovered in clover and mterviewed. Mr. Fanz was surprised to learn that he had become a martyr and imparted the somewhat surprising information that he is a ‘+hot-headed democrat.” It will now be in order to inter- View Senator Ingalls, a The rash young Duke of Orleans—Dukes of Orleans have usually been rash—is brother of the new Queen of Portugal and his proposed attack on the French republic, ridiculous as it appears, has stirred up the Portuguese repab- hheans, He gets his royal relative as well as himself inte bot water. ————————— The Ohio ballot box forgery investigation certainly investigated, but outside of costing some money and some time no material results are discoverable.
