Some of the Details of a Plan Suggested Four Years Ago. The suggestion that a permanent memorial of the discovery of America in the form of a grand arch be erected in this city is not a recent one. Mr. Frank Sewall, in a communication to Tat Star last week, elaborated the iden and sug- gested the location of the arch at the head of 16th street, Tux Star of March 20, 1886, pub- lished the easdiest definite proposition made on | this subject. It was a paper read before the hiterary society by Mra. Elizabeth Bryant Johnson. She quoted an editorial from Tre Strap published in November, 1885, suggesting the appropriateness of providing for some enduring mouument to commem- orate Columbus’ discovery, and proposed! that this monument should take ti form of a superb arch, to be erected on one of the beauti- elevations north of the city, somewhere between 12th and 20th streets, Mrs. Johnston aleo went so far as to suggest some of the details of this arch, “At the base, north, east, south and west," she wrote, “‘let the four magnificent rivers of America—the Columbia, the St. Law- rence, the Musissippi and the Amazon— be symbolized by four gigantic river gods, rarrounded by the flore’ and fauna of their respective sections. The large inclosed space about might be utilized for a ‘mariners hall,’ where there should be placed such relics of Columbus as we may have permission to re- produce—such as maps, charts, records, the two accepted portraits, one in Fiarence and the other in Madrid; also historical paintings | that our artists may from time to time supply. In a few years a museum replete with interest, especially to the seafaring, would be gathered, Above the arch, uplifted by immense figures of faith, courage and science, a gilded world should be borne.” ae A LARGER DEATH LIST. The Grip ts Departing, but Leaves a Legacy of Fatal Lung Troubles. In the absence of official reports on the grip the extent of the disease can be ascertained from the police as well as from any other source. During the early part of last week there were about seventy policemen down with the epidemic. That was the highest number sick at any time with the influenza, Since then there has been a gradual decrease in the num- ber of sick men and to-day there were only forty-five names on the sick list, Maj. Moore, who was confined to his room | several days with a severe attack of the grip, has recovered and was able to be at headquar- ters yesterday. ‘THE MORTALITY LAST WEEK was greatly in excess of the previous week. Last week there were 66 deaths from acute lung troubles. Of the 66 deaths 44 resulted from pneumonia, 12 from bronchitis, 7 from conges- tion of the lungs, 2 from the grip and 1 from influenza, During the previous week there were 44 deaths from acute lung troubles, 32 of them having resulted from pneumonia. “DECIDEDLY ON THR WANE.” “The grip is decidedly on the wane,” was the information received at the health office this morning. The reports of the physicians to the poor received this morning show a decided de- crease last week as compared with the previous week. The fatal results, however, seem to multiply, as is shown by'a comparison of the | Gouney porte, there being twenty-two more | aor reported from lung troubles last week than for the week previous, The reports of the physicians to the poor re- ed at the health office this morning show the following cases: Dr. Morgan—influenza, 19; bronchitis, 11; Crete pam 1. Dr. Winter— influenza, 37; bronchitis, 1; pneumonia, 2. Dr, Carraber—inluenza, 26; bronchitis, 1; pneu: monia, 5. Dr. MacDonaid—influenza, 7; bron- chitis, 6; pneumonia, 1. COLORED PEOPLE EXEMPT. It is stated that there have been but very few cases of the grip among the poor colored peo- ple as compared with the number of poor white persons who have had it. The physicians are unable to account for it. AT THE CITY POST OFFICE. The good weather during the latter part of last week has had a correspondingly good effect on the condition of the health at the city post office and the grip is on the decline there. Today there are comparatively few of the clerks and carriers absent, hardly more in —. than is usual at this period of the year. bard work Saturday and yesterday all the mal matter has been disposed of, and. today the employes of the office started out with all the back work cleared up and everything done up to time, the first time that such has been the condition of affairs in over two weeks, GRIPLETS. Judge Miller, who has been suffering from the grip for several days, was unable to hold court today, Justice Mills acted’ in his ab- sence. Gen. Henderson of Mlinois, chairman of the House committee on rivers and hota who has been ‘eg ill with the grip, was much bet- ter yester Dr. E. A. dams of East Washington, who has poem ute ill for some days with pneumonia, re- sulting from an attack of the grip, passed a night last night aud this morning he asked for something toeat. The atten physicians beld # consultation last evening and found the patient better than at the first consultation. There have been several cases of the grij srip at the jail, but all the patients have recover Lt is said b; jiciana that there are many cases ot ocr a ygrernvactivl fever in the city that are included in the “grip list,” ——————— WANTED—HELP. _WANTED—SITUATIONS.
